Many people have felt isolated and afraid during the pandemic this year, and the Weber family is no different. But 11-year-old Emerson Weber has a hobby that has turned into a remarkable antidote. Emerson writes letters — lots of letters. One day last spring, she even wrote to Doug, her mail carrier. “I want to thank you for taking my letters and delivering them,” she said. “You are very important to me.”
In no time at all, Emerson’s simple thank-you note was shared around the United States Postal Service (USPS). Many of the workers who read it wrote her back. Her father was so moved by the response that he took to Twitter to share his appreciation for the outpouring of love.
“Emerson, my 11-year-old, is on a bit of a wild ride with the USPS and our local mail carrier, Doug.” The next day after Emerson gave Doug the letter, a package arrived with two letters. Doug had shared Emerson’s letter with his supervisor, Sara, and they both wanted to share how touched they were.
The next week, they got a letter addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. Weber”. It seemed that Sara had shared Emerson’s note as a “Token of Thanks” in the internal USPS newsletter, and there were postal folks that wanted to thank her.
That day, the family saw Doug getting out of the truck with two BOXES of letters from around the country. These letters were so deeply human. They were filled with family, pets, hobbies, community, and an overwhelming sense of kindness.
But there was something more in these letters. People felt seen — some for the first time in a long time. “I work alone in a small rural post office ...” “My kids all live far away ...” “Not a lot of people think about how hard we work ...”
One wrote, “I can’t tell you how much it means to read your letter ...”
With dozens of new pen pals, Emerson did what she does best.
    She wrote.
She acknowledged that there WERE a lot of letters, but she read them all.
“I’m not sharing this because I’m a proud dad,” her father wrote on Twitter. “I’m sharing it because it is relatively easy, if we take the time, to give others the one thing they need to be well — human connection. Emerson does this boldly. Her lesson to me was simple: It’s the small things that matter most.”
Send a letter. Make a call. Take a step of boldness. For yourself or for others.
24.Mr. Weber shared Emerson’s story on Twitter because ________.
A.he was moved by the readers’ response
B.he wanted more people to read the letter
C.he took great pride in being Emerson’s father
D.he was thankful to Doug for delivering letters
25.What do the letters in the passage symbolize?
    A.A sense of community.
    B.The company of family.
    C.A bond between people.
    D.The outpouring of courage.
26.Which of the following words can best describe Emerson?
A.Selfless and patient. B.Smart and mature.
C.Determined and proud. D.Loving and grateful.
    【答案】24.A 25.C 26.D

根据本文第一句“Many people have felt isolated and afraid during the pandemic this year, and the Weber family is no different. (在今年的流感大流行期间,许多人感到孤立和害怕,Weber一家也不例外)”以及后文Emerson的行动可知,Emerson用写信的方式让人们在流感的孤立害怕时期感到了人与人之间的温暖,再根据最后一段Emerson的父亲在推特上所说“I’m sharing it because it is relatively easy, if we take the time, to give others the one thing they need to be well — human connection.

Combining knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering, scientists from McGill University develop a biomaterial tough enough to repair the heart, muscles, and vocal cords, representing a major advance in medicine.
“People recovering from heart damage often face a long and tricky journey. Healing is challenging because of the constant movement tissues must withstand (承受) as the heart beats. The same is true for vocal cords. Until now there was no injectable (可注射的) material strong enough for the job," says Guangyu Bao, a PhD candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University.
The team, led by Professor Luc Mongeau and Assistant Professor Jianyu Li, developed a new injectable hydrogel (水凝胶) for wound repair, which is a type of biomaterial that provides room for cells to live and grow. Once injected into the body, the biomaterial forms a stable structure allowing live cells to grow or pass through to repair the injured organs.
“The results are promising, and we hope that one day the new hydrogel will be used to restore the voice of people with damaged vocal cords," says Guangyu Bao.
The scientists tested the durability of their hydrogel in a machine they developed to copy the extreme biomechanics of human vocal cords. Vibrating (振动) at 120 times a second for over 6 million cycles, the new biomaterial remained undamaged while other standard hydrogels broken into pieces, unable to deal with the stress of the load.
“We were incredibly excited to see it worked perfectly in our test. Before our work, no injectable hydrogels possessed both high porosity and toughness at the same time. To solve this issue, we introduced a pore-forming polymer to our formula (配方),”says Guangyu Bao.
The innovation opens new ways of making progress for other applications like tissue engineering. The team is also looking to use the hydrogel technology to create lungs to test COVID-19 drugs.
27.Why did the researchers develop the new biomaterial?
    A.To experience a journey. B.To repair wound.
C.To represent an advance. D.To replace organs.
28.What is unique of the biomaterial compared to other materials?
A.It is heavier. B.It is more breakable.
C.It is changeable. D.It is more injectable.
29.What might the researchers do next about the biomaterial?
A.Make artificial organs for drug test.
B.Try hard to increase its toughness.
C.Apply it to the cure of COVID-19.
D.Adjust their formula to improve it.
30.What the author's purpose of writing this passage?
A.To show his respect to the researchers.
B.To stress the importance of innovation.
C.To promote the sales of a new hydrogel.
D.To introduce a newly- developed material.
    【答案】27.B 28.D 29.A 30.D

Record-breaking. Abnormal. Dangerous. That’s how the National Weather Service described the heat wave hitting much of North America.
The heat wave has already broken all-time high temperature records in places unaccustomed to such extreme heat. For example, Oregon’s capital city, Salem, recorded the highest temperature in its history on Sunday: 130F, breaking the old mark by 4 degrees. The temperature hit 104F in Seattle. It was an all-time record for the city better known for rain than heat and was the first time the area reached such a high temperature since records began being kept in 1894.
Weather forecasters said the heat wave was caused by an extended “heat dome”which allowed hot air from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic to stream northward over much of North America.
This current heat wave was yet more evidence of the impact of human-caused climate change. “When it comes to record-breaking heat events, the study has been run for event after event in region after region in year after year. And the answer is almost always the same,” said Kristie Ebi, a professor at the University of Washington “The days-long heat wave is a taste of the future as climate change reshapes global weather patterns.”
“Another aspect that we see connected to climate change but that we don’t hear about as much is the fact that there is also a lot more water in the atmosphere now. As we warm the oceans and warm the air, there is more evaporation(蒸发)and that wetter air makes us feel hotter,” added weather forecaster, Jennifer Francis. “A combination of high temperature and moisture(湿度)in the air means dangerous conditions for the young, elderly or others who are not healthy. Please drink plenty of water; stay out of the sun and in air-conditioned rooms.”
31.What was the previous temperature record in Salem?
    A.104F. B.126F. C.130F. D.134F.
32.What is the root cause of the present heat wave in North America?
A.The climate change. B.The northward air streams.
C.The extended "heat dome". D.The moisture in the atmosphere.
33.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Dangerous Heat Wave Will Last Long
B.A Heat Wave Roasts Much of North America
C.Measures Must Be Taken to Protect the Young and Elderly
D.The "Heat Dome" Is Expected to Cover the Pacific Northwest
34.Where can the text be found?
    A.In a first aid guidebook. B.In a weather forecast.
    C.In a news report. D.In a professor's lecture.

In a growing number of school districts across America, students must wear a uniform. According to the US Department of Education, wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally. Schools claim that when students come in uniform, it improves discipline and leads to academic gains. However, students protested the decision.
A more important question is whether there is any evidence to show that mandatory (强制的) uniform policies can lead to improved student outcomes. A 2003 study that used a large national data set concluded that elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behavior problems. But it found that high schools had a greater frequency of misbehavior.
Interestingly, even when evidence is available, educators could take the opposite view. For example, a study of educators in 38 North Carolina high schools found that 61% of the school masters believed that there was a reduction in cases of misbehavior on campus when school uniforms were introduced. In reality, the data showed no change in incidents of suspensions (停学) and other problems.
Similarly, research on the effectiveness of school uniforms on increasing student attendance and achievement is confusing. For example, one study concluded that school uniforms resulted in increased student achievement and increased attendance. However, another study found little impact on academics at all levels and little evidence of improvement in attendance for girls and drop in attendance for boys. So, what does lack of consistent research mean for policy?
In my view, it does not mean that schools should not carry out such policies. It does mean, however, that educators must be clear about the goals that they hope to achieve. Decreased discipline problems, increased attendance and academic achievement may not be achieved just by wearing uniforms. But there may be other benefits, for instance, it could help a school promote its brand through a uniform look. School uniforms may also serve as a symbol of commitment to academic achievement.
40.Why are students required to wear school uniforms in America?
41.What are the findings of the 2003 study?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Some studies showed wearing school uniforms helped improve students' performance, but other studies found no consistent results, so schools should stop the school uniform policy.
43.What do you think of wearing school uniforms? Explain your reasons. (In about 40 words)
40.Because wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally.
41.Elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behaviour problems, but high schools had a greater frequency of misbehaviour.
42.Some studies showed wearing school uniforms helped improve students' performance, but other studies found no consistent results, so schools should stop the school uniform policy.
According to the passage, the author doesn't mean that schools should stop the school uniform policy. He/She suggests that educators should be clear about the goals they hope to achieve with mandatory uniform policies.
43.(1) I am in favour of wearing school uniforms. I don’t want to waste time wondering what to wear. School uniforms are specially designed for students so they are comfortable. Wearing my school uniform with the school logo on it, I have a sense of pride.
    (2) I am against wearing school uniforms. I think we have the freedom to choose whatever we want to get dressed in. I don't like it when others choose what to wear in my place. With my favourite clothes on, I can be a true self.
根据第一段的“According to the US Department of Education, wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally.(据美国教育部表示,穿校服可以维持纪律,帮助学校识别那些非法进入学校的人。)” Because wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally.。
根据第二段的“A 2003 study that used a large national data set concluded that elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behavior problems. But it found that high schools had a greater frequency of misbehavior.(2003年的一项研究使用了大量的全国性数据集,得出结论说,小学和中学穿校服的学生行为问题更少。但研究发现,高中的不良行为发生率更高。)”可知,2003年的一项研究发现,在穿校服的小学和初中,学生的行为问题较少,但在高中,学生的不良行为发生率较高。故答案为Elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behaviour problems, but high schools had a greater frequency of misbehaviour.。
根据最后一段的“In my view, it does not mean that schools should not carry out such policies. It does mean, however, that educators must be clear about the goals that they hope to achieve.(在我看来,这并不意味着学校不应该执行这些政策。然而,这确实意味着教育工作者必须清楚他们希望实现的目标。) ”可知,作者并不是说学校应该停止校服政策。他/她建议教育工作者应该清楚他们希望通过强制统一政策实现的目标。故答案为Some studies showed wearing school uniforms helped improve students' performance, but other studies found no consistent results, so schools should stop the school uniform policy. According to the passage, the author doesn't mean that schools should stop the school uniform policy. He/She suggests that educators should be clear about the goals they hope to achieve with mandatory uniform policies.。
I am in favour of wearing school uniforms. I don’t want to waste time wondering what to wear. School uniforms are specially designed for students so they are comfortable. Wearing my school uniform with the school logo on it, I have a sense of pride.。

    Yours,
    Li Hua
Dear Jim,
How is everything going? Since you are interested in our Campus Cleanup Day, I’m more than willing to share more with you.
It is an annual activity in our school. Every Dec. 31, students do a thorough cleanup to welcome the coming new year, such as cleaning the windows and sweeping the floors in the teaching buildings. The pictures you saw on our school official website were taken when we were helping in the school canteen, where we wiped the tables and placed them in order. From our smiles, you can tell how happy and content we were for doing our bit to make our school a place just like home.
What do you think of this activity? Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
