Surf holidays don’t have to mean noisy backpacker hotels and sticky floors. You can also book some truly unique surf stays right here.
The house on an island, Newquay, England
Separated from the mainland and accessed via a suspension bridge, this island is completely isolated (隔绝的) by water. It’s particularly famous for surfing and storm watching. The Camp at The Wave is minutes from an artificial surf break producing 1,000 perfect waves of varying sizes and shapes an hour. Unlike other surf destinations, you can book your trip for whenever suits you and be guaranteed perfect waves. These tents have a kitchen. There’s also a cafe on site.
Sleeps eight two-night minimum stay mid-week and three-night minimum stay on weekends. From £ 105.
The coastal carriage, Ceredigion, Wales
The last of its type in existence, this Edwardian original sleeper carriage was built in 1905 for the London and South Western Railway. Throughout history scientists have risked their health and their lives in their search for the truth.
Sir Issac Newton, the seventeenth century scientist was very smart, but that didn’t stop him from doing some pretty stupid things. In his laboratory in Cambridge, he often did the strangest experiments. Once, while testing how light passes through lenses(晶状体), he put a long needle into his eye, pushed it to the back, and then moved it around just to see what would happen. Luckily, there was no lasting bad effect. On another occasion, he stared at the sun, for as long as he could bear, to discover what effect this would have on his sight. To escape suffering permanent damage, he had to spend some days in a dark room before his eyes recovered.
In the 1750s,the Swedish chemist Karl Scheele, was the first person to find a way to produce phosphorus(磷). He, in fact, discovered eight more chemical elements, including Chlorine(氯),though he didn’t get any place for them. He was a very clever scientist, but he had a strange habit of tasting a little of every substance he studied. This risky practice finally caught up with him. In 1 786,he was found dead in his laboratory, surrounded by a large number of dangerous chemicals, any of which might have been responsible for his death.
Eugene Shoemaker was a respected geologist, he spent a large part of his life studying craters(陨石坑), and how they were formed, and later the research into the comments of the plane Jupiter. In 1997, he and his wife were in the Australian desert. where they went every year to search for places where comets(彗星)might have hit the earth. While driving in the Tanami desert, one of the most open places in the world, another vehicle rushed into them, and Shoe maker died on the spot. Some of his ashes(骨灰)were sent to the moon by the Lunar Prospect or, a spacecraft. and he is the only person who has this honor.

When we look at birds, we tend to focus on their plumage. But many birds have colorful body parts that are not feathers. So a group of scientists wondered if dinosaurs, the distant ancestors of birds, also had some shining body parts. According to a study published this week, some dinosaurs might have had colorful feet and faces, and these bright body fashions could have been used to attract their mates.
“Living birds use a collection of pigments (色素) and can be very colorful on their legs and around their eyes,” lead author Sarah Davis said in the University of Texas at Austin on Thursday. “We could expect that extinct dinosaurs expressed the same colors.”
As is known to us, carrots are a famous example of how carotenoids (胡萝卜素) make food orange. Data analysis from the past also suggested insights into modern birds. They also give birds their bright yellow, orange and red colors. The study found birds with plant-based diets with plenty of carotenoids tend to have more bright colors in more places on their bodies than meat-focused birds. “The earliest dinosaurs were as big as a small horse and ate such large birds or animals,” said the study’s co-author Julia Clarke, “so this led to the coloration of dinosaurs’ skin.”
However, the fossil (化石) record doesn’t give scientists a lot to go on when it comes to determining what color the dinosaurs have, but the study suggests some bright new possibilities for what dinosaurs might have looked like.
8. What does the underlined word “plumage” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Feather. B. Shape. C. Foot. D. Face.
9. What might contribute to dinosaurs’ bright color according to Julia Clarke?
A. Plants in their habitat. B. Carrots in their bodies.
C. Color from their mates. D. Pigments from their diets.
10. What did researchers do to draw their conclusion?
A. They analyzed species of birds.
B. They examined data and fossil.
C. They did research on various animals.
D. They studied the function of pigments.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A book review. B. A news report.
C. A guidebook. D. A collection of stories.

A series of massive thunder storms hit our area recently, causing flash flooding and knocking down tree branches and even trees. I had spent the afternoon picking up branches out of my yard and throwing them away. Then just before I was getting ready to take my dogs for their last walk of the day, the warnings came on my television and over my phone that another of these storms was heading our way.
I quickly took my dogs outside. Huge clouds were rolling in while thunder boomed over the hills. I knew that the stars were shining but I certainly couldn’t see them. The darkness seemed darker and scarier than usual because I knew what was on the way. That was when I saw it. The tiniest blink of light, up high, at the far end of the grassland behind my house. I smiled. The first of the fireflies had appeared for the summer at just the time I needed to see his light. Soon a few others were blinking their lights as well. It amazed me how far their light traveled in the darkness of the night and how they didn’t seem bothered at all by the approaching storm. I spent an extra few minutes watching my lightening bug friends and taking in their message of light before heading in to get ready for the storm. As I did, though, I noticed that the darkness no longer seemed so scary and that my fear had been replaced with joy.
Life does have its share of storms, some caused by nature and some caused by us. We can’t go through life being scared of them, however. Take a lesson from the fireflies then. Let your light shine. It may seem tiny but you will be amazed at how far it can be seen and how easily it can drive the dark away.
12. What happened when the author was about to walk the dog?
A. His house was heavily damaged.
B. He was encouraged to pick up the branches.
C. He was broadcasting a bad weather warning.
D. Another big storm was broadcasted to be on its way.
13. Which of the following can best describe the huge clouds?
A. Normal. B. Frightening. C. Pale. D. High.
14. Why did the author smile when he saw the tiniest blink of light?
A. There would be no storm at all. B. He could then walk his dog easier.
C. He found great hope from the dark. D. He wasn’t afraid of being lost then.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. We should always give off light when in trouble.
B. Small light in life won’t help much in our life.
C. Some great troubles won’t be easily dealt with.
D. We should avoid being disturbed by trouble.

Do you experience worries that get stuck in your head? Do these thoughts come with physical symptoms such as restlessness, muscle tension, or a racing heart? ____16____
Your parents may help you move past anxiety by telling you “You don’t feel safe, but you are safe” and giving you space to experience discomfort and coming out the other side of it. ____17____ Many of these are the ones that you can apply in the moment without them being obvious to others.
● Practise mindful noticing. Mindfulness is the exercise of being aware in the moment and noticing your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Practising mindfulness can help shift your focus away from anxious thoughts and toward self-regulation. Try focusing on an object in the environment and giving it all your attention. ____18____ The more details you point out, the more your brain will focus on that object instead of the anxious thoughts.
● ____19____ More demanding than simply counting in order, randomly picking numbers requires more attention. Again, this shifts attention away from anxiety-related thoughts and onto the task of reciting random numbers, which, though boring, do not cause anxiety.
● “Silence, Bruno!” ____20____ Recognizing an anxious thought for what it is can help put things in perspective and give one the chance to challenge the unhelpful thoughts. 第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On Friday evening, Emmett and I went to a movie as scheduled. After purchasing the tickets and drinks, we entered the cinema with delight beforehand, waiting for the beginning of the movie.
When I got up in the middle of the movie, Emmett whispered, “Carter, where are you going?” “I forgot to call my mom to tell her what time to pick us up.” I whispered back, leaving my jacket on the seat.
I squeezed past the people in my row trying not to step on any feet while still watching the screen. I didn’t want to miss a thing. Balfour, the good guy in the movie, was trapped in an underground cave.
When I came back, Balfour’s flashlight almost went out. An enormous snake was moving toward him, twisting its body. Balfour struggled to loosen the chains around his hands and feet to reach his magic cape. With the cape around him, he could completely disappear.
I crawled back across eight people (I counted on the way out), never taking my eyes off the screen. I sat down in my seat slowly, then picked up my drink, and swallowed it quickly. But suddenly my brain said, “That’s not coke. That’s lemonade.” I looked down at the cup, just as the girl next to me shouted, “He drank my lemonade!”
“ Shhhh!” the people around us said, making quiet complaints.
“ Where’s Emmett?” I asked, as if the girl had hidden him under her seat.
“ Carter, down here,” Emmett answered in a low voice. He was two rows ahead of me. I was in the wrong row! Everyone was turning around to look at me.
“ Here,” I said, handing the girl her drink.
“Eww,” she said. “You have had a drink of it, so you owe me a lemonade.”
“Shhhh!” everyone said again.
“OK, OK,” I said, starting my crawl across eight sets of feet again. Everybody were complaining as I inched out.
“Don’t come back,” the boy on the end said.
