Kemira had just jumped in the shower when she heard her mother,Tammy, yelling. Kemira’s 12-day-old daughter was choking. Having fed baby Ryleigh just 30 minutes earlier, the 24-year-old new mother burst out of the bathroom and began patting (轻拍) her daughter on the back, but the baby didn’t make a sound. Kemira knew they needed to get to the hospital fast.

They had barely made it out of their neighborhood when the flashing lights of a police car appeared behind them. Officer Will Kimbro stopped the speeding driver. Tammy pulled over and jumped out of the car, crying that her granddaughter had stopped breathing. Desperate for help, Kemira handed her daughter to Kimbro. He found her heart was barely beating, and called an ambulance---it would take seven minutes, and the hospital was even further away. That was seven minutes Ryleigh didn’t have, because her lips had already become blue.

The fact that Kimbro was there was something of a miracle. He is a school police officer who usually spends his days patrolling (巡逻) the middle school ten miles away. But he travels further when school is out in the summer. Even luckier: He had recently completed a first-aid class.

Officer Kimbro gave the baby to Kemira to hold. He checked Ryleigh’s pulse and then began tapping and pressing her chest. Thanks to the class, Kimbro knew the choking baby didn’t have a chance if there was a blockage (堵塞物), and he used one finger to clear her throat. Twenty seconds later, Ryleigh began to cry. “If she’s crying like that, she’s breathing,” said Kimbro. Before the ambulance arrived, Kimbro continued giving first aid. The whole time he was thinking, “Don’t let this baby die in front of her mother and grandmother.”

At the hospital, Ryleigh recovered quickly, and she was brought back to life thanks to a determined school police officer who was in the right place at the right time.

    24. Why did Kimbro stop the car?

      A. Kemira signaled to him for help.

      B. Tammy drove faster than the legal limit.

      C. There was a traffic jam in the neighborhood.

      D. The baby had to be taken to hospital at once.

    25. What was Kemira’s reaction after being stopped?

      A. She was too angry to explain herself.

      B. She tried to do all she could to save her baby.

      C. She got mad at Kimbro and gave up hope.

      D. She lost her mind and didn’t know what to do.

    26. Kimbro felt sure that his aid worked when ________.

      A. he noticed Ryleigh’s lips were blue B. he checked Ryleigh’s pulse

      C. he pressed Ryleigh’s chest D. he heard Ryleigh crying

    27. Which of the following words can best describe Kimbro?

      A. Warm and lucky. B. Brave and generous.

      C. Kind and responsible. D. Intelligent and skillful.

    C

It's official that altruistic(利他的)acts like volunteering can help seniors live healthier lives. Now, a study from Harvard University found that older adults who volunteer for even two hours a week can become more physically active and have a better sense of wellbeing than people who don’t.

The studys findings were based on surveys and interviews from 13, 000 participants, over the age of 50. While it has been a common belief that there are health benefits from volunteering, now it is official.

There was a four-year follow-up period where participants who volunteered showed a lower risk of death and a lessening of physical impairments as well as an increase in physical activity. The people who took part in the study also had other positive outcomes including more optimism and purpose in life as well as a decrease in feeling lonely. The findings of this study are even more vital due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Fortunately, there are ways to virtually volunteer in these hard times. There are many ways to volunteer without ever leaving home. One way is to man a mental health or suicide prevention line. Another way is to telephone, Skype, or WhatsApp elderly neighbors who are socially distancing or quarantined(隔离).

If you can get out to volunteer, food banks, which are a good choice, really need to help to distribute food to the much higher numbers of people who need help since most of their volunteers are elderly and cannot go in person.

Another way to volunteer is to participate in Good Deeds Day which will be held on April 11, 2021.There are numbers of volunteering ideas both in person or virtual on the site. No matter how you do it, take the time to volunteer. It really is good for you.

    28. What is the special significance of this study?

      A. Wide ranges of participants.

      B. People’s high enthusiasm for the research.

      C. The wide popularization of voluntary behavior.

      D. Official confirmation of benefits for senior volunteers.

    29. What does the author intend to convey in Paragraph 3?

      A. Volunteering benefits participants.      B. Volunteers had no sense of loneliness.

      C. The study was not easy to carry out.     D. The public think highly of the study.

    30. Which way is helpful to quarantining elderly neighbors?

      A. Chatting to their faces.      B. Sending then food.

      C. Giving them a ring.         D. Dropping in frequently.

    31. Who's the text mainly intended for?

      A. Volunteers.      B. Seniors.       C. Youngsters.      D. Students.

    D

In a large survey of people’s first memories, nearly 40% of participants reported a first memory that is likely to be fictional, according to findings published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Current research indicates that people’s earliest memories date from around 3 to 3. 5 years of age. However, the study from researchers at City, University of London, the University of Bradford, and Nottingham Trent University found that 38. 6% of 6, 641 participants claimed to have memories from age 2 or younger, with 893 people claiming memories from age 1 or younger. This was particularly prevalent among middle-aged and older adults.

As many of these memories dated before the age of 2 and younger, the authors suggest that these fictional memories are based on remembered fragments(碎片)of early experience-such as a pram(婴儿车), family relationships and feeling sad — and some facts or knowledge about their own infancy or childhood which may have been derived from photographs or family conversations.

“Further details may be unconsciously inferred or added, e. g. that one was wearing nappy when standing in the cot(幼儿床),” added Shazia Akhatr, first author on the study and Senior Research Associate at the University of Bradford.

“When we looked through the responses from participants we found that a lot of these first’ memories’ were frequently related to infancy, and a typical example would be a memory based around a pram,” explained Martin Conway, Director at the Centre for Memory and Law at City, University of London and coauthor of the paper.

“For this person, this type of memory could have resulted from someone saying something like ‘mother and a large green pram’. The person then imagines what it would have looked like. Over time these fragments then become a memory and often the person will start to add things in such as a string of toys along the top, " he added.

“Crucially, the person remembering them doesn’t know this is fictional,” Conway noted. “In fact when people are told that their memories are false they often don’t believe it. This partly due to the fact that the systems that allow us to remember things are very complex, and it’s not until we’re 5 or 6 that we form adult-like memories due to the way that the brain develops and due to our maturing understanding of the world.”

    32. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Unique.  B. Crazy.  C. Common.  D. Doubtful.

    33. What can be concluded from the study mentioned in the passage?

    A. Some people have clear knowledge about their own infancy.

    B. Added details are an important clue to recall the childhood.

    C. Most people claimed to have memories from age 2 or younger.

    D. Talks between family members influence the earliest memories.

    34. How does Martin Conway present his opinion?

    A. By making comparison.    B. By setting examples.

    C. By analyzing data.    D. By referring to documents.

    35. What’s the main idea of the text?

    A. Many people’s earliest memories may be fictional.

    B. People’s earliest memories can date back to 2 or younger.

    C. The middle-aged and adults specialize in detailing their first memory.

    D. Memories develop due to our maturing understanding of the world.

    第二节(满分25分)

        阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.

This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.

Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.

One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed(辗转)and turned in bed.

Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(附着)to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.

Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach.

    Sami watched dumbstruck(呆若木鸡).

The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.

Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging(汹涌)in.

Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
