When you are worried about something at work, do you find yourself more tired at the end of the day? This phenomenon is a result of the activation of a specific area of the brain when we attempt to participate in both physical tasks and mental tasks simultaneously.Ranjana Mehta, Ph.D, assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health, carried out a study examining the relationship between physical and mental tiredness and brain behavior. The study showed that if we attempt mental tasks while doing physical tasks, we activate specific areas, called the prefrontal cortex (PFC) (前额皮质), in our brain. This can cause our bodies to become tired much sooner than if we were only participating in a physical task. The brain is just like any other biological tissue (组织), because it can be overused and can suffer from tiredness.“Existing examinations of physical and mental tiredness have been used to study muscular and biomechanical (生物力学的) changes,” said Mehta. “The purpose of this study was to examine the influence on the PFC while we compare the changes in brain behavior with traditional measures of tiredness.”According to Mehta, study findings show that there were lower blood oxygen levels in the PFC following combined physical and mental tiredness compared to that of just physical tiredness conditions. Through simultaneous examination of the brain and muscle function it is obvious that when we participant in highly cognitive tasks, brain resources are divided which may speed up the development of physical tiredness. It is critical that researchers consider the brain as well as the body when examining tiredness development and its influence on the body. This can provide us with a total understanding of what is happening to the body when we perform our daily activities. “Not a lot of people see the value in looking at both the brain and the body together,” said Mehta. “However, no one does purely physical or mental work; they always do both.”41What does the passage mainly tell us?AInfluence of stress and mental frustration on tiredness development.BInfluence of stress and mental frustration on mental abilities.CInfluence of mental work on tiredness development.DInfluence of physical work on mental abilities.42What does the underlined word “simultaneously” in the first paragraph probably mean?AAt the same time. BOne by one. CStep by step. DOver and over again.43It can be inferred that Ranjana Mehta's study has little to do with________.Atiredness in the body Bbrain behaviorCmental tiredness Dmental diseases44The brain is not an exception in the body when it________.Ais used to complete a specific taskBsuffers from tiredness caused by overuseCbecomes tired much soonerDis examined from a physical view45According to Mehta, one of the study's aims was to find________.Ahow the combination of physical and mental tasks affects the PFCBthe differences between brain behavior and traditional measuresCwhy changes in brain behavior influence the PFCDmuscular and biomechanical changesCIn cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city. Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low-paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics claim, an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if “other things are equal” Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.46There is the possibility that setting maximum rent may ______.Acause a shortage of apartments Bworry those who rent apartments as homesCincrease the profits of landlords Dencourage landlords to invest in building apartment47We can safely say that rent control ______.Awill always benefit those who rent apartments Bis unnecessaryCwill bring negative effects in the long run Dis necessary under all circumstances48The problem of unemployment will arise ______.Aif the minimum wage is set too high Bif the minimum wage is set too lowCif the workers are unskilled Dif the maximum wage is set49The passage tells us ______.Athe relationship between supply and demand Bthe possible results of government controlsCThe necessity of government control Dthe urgency of getting rid of government controls50Which of the following statements is NOT true?AThe results of economic decisions cannot always be predicted.BMinimum wage cannot always protect employees.CEconomic theory can predict the results of economic decisions if other factors are not changing.DEconomic decisions should not be based on economic theory.  DMonarch butterflies migrate (迁徙) by the millions each year, making the trip from northern areas of the Continent to California and Mexico and back. Because most butterflies only live for a few weeks to a few months, it takes several generations of butterflies to complete the migrationAs monarch butterflies are a threatened species with their population numbers in decline, Patrick Guerra, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati, and his colleagues wanted to see what types of environmental stress might be linked to their decline. “We use monarch butterflies as a model system to understand long-distance animal migration. Our goal was to understand how environmental stress, such as different types of stress caused by urbanization, impacts animal migratory phenomena,” Guerra says. For their study, researchers conducted lab studies where they reproduced the effects of artificial light pollution with butterflies using a flight simulator (模拟器).“The flight simulator is like a butterfly treadmill (跑步机), in which we can study the flight behavior of insects in controlled, experimental conditions. We first tested if monarchs treated a single, artificial light source as if it were the actual sun during the day,” Guerra says.“Once we established that they did, we then tested how the monarchs would behave when exposed to this same artificial light source during their night.”Butterflies stayed quiet and unmoving when they were first placed in the flight simulator in the dark. But as soon as scientists turned on the light, they started flying. The light made them believe that night was day and this can cause them to fly longer at night or start flying too early. The study has found that the internal circadian (昼夜) clock of butterflies functions normally when they are exposed to natural day night lighting cycles, but artificial light, such as a streetlight, at night can throw off a monarch butterfly’s internal compass. It can affect their circadian rhythms, which can make the monarch butterflies get lost when they try to fly the next day. This shows without darkness, the circadian clock of butterflies cannot function properly.“When exposed to artificial light, the light can perturb the normal functioning of the animal’s circadian clock,” Guerra says. “Light pollution, particularly nighttime light pollution, causes animals to experience light at a time when they are not supposed to, e.g., at night when they are normally in the dark, and are at rest. Exposure to such light can prevent the behavior and biological process of animals which they rely on or that are regulated by the circadian clock.”51Why did the researchers carry out the study?ATo look for the reason for butterflies’ migrationBTo test what action should be taken to protect butterflies.CTo know about the circadian rhythms of migratory animals.DTo find out how the environmental stress affects animal migration.52What can we learn from the lab studies?AThe monarchs mistook a single, artificial light as the actual sun during the day.BThe Butterflies moved quietly when first placed in the flight simulator in the darkCThe monarchs got lost in direction when the light in the flight simulator was on.DThe Butterflies were never at rest when they are exposed to the light.53What conclusion can be drawn from the experiment?ANatural light contributes much to pollutionBMigratory animals often lose their way,CLight pollution is increasingly seriousDDarkness is vital to migratory animals.54What docs the underlined word “perturb” in Paragraph 9 probably mean?AStop BDisturb. CReflect DEnhance.55What could be the best title for the passage?ALight pollution can interfere with butterfly migrationBEfforts are made to save the endangered monarch butterflies.CButterflies’ circadian cycle is revealed in research.DHuman activity impacts the rest of nature negatively.  II(35) 五、阅读表达(本大题共5小题,10) A Bridge Linking Art and the AudienceAccording to a 2018 report, people aged between 16 and 24 make up about 15 percent of the population but only 10 percent of museum-goers. Similarly, people aged over 35 go half as much as you would expect from their population size. We have reached the point of recognising the disconnection between art and the audience but haven’t yet determined how to bridge the gap. Two answers to tackling this challenge lie in telling a greater diversity of art histories and communicating these stories in more accessible ways.In 2018, a radio program called Art Matters was started with the aim of discussing art from a pop-culture viewpoint with topics that would engage younger and more diverse audience. It offers an accessible pathway to art history with conversations on different topics. Art history is about storytelling; art content shines when there is an effort to bring audience along for the discussion.More traditional institutions are paying attention. Recently the Getty Museum issued a social-media challenge for people to recreate paintings using items they had at home. Users displayed incredible creativity, and the museum was flooded with submissions. This reaction proves that there is a potential desire for the audience to engage with art topics if the format is appealing. Since many people feel intimidated and think that there’s a base level of understanding required to join the conversation, the Getty initiative serves as a reminder that there are many pathways to engaging with it.Another result of the Getty challenge was the exposure given to a diversity of artworks. The famous opera singer Peter Brathwaite, for example, made scores of attractive recreations highlighting centuries of black paintings. His efforts opposed the idea that there were not many historical paintings of black figures. It is extremely important that we do a better job of showing the complex and diverse stories that are represented in art.Social media have offered a platform for people who have not traditionally had a seat at the table. Anyone can recognise a gap in the field and address it. Accounts have gathered tens of thousands of followers. They are the proof that there is hunger to hear these art histories, and these themes work brilliantly for museum programming. But there is only so much that can be done without the museums and galleries changing meaningfully from within. We need to see a better balance of these stories represented in permanent collections. We also need a much wider diversity of people and interests represented on board. Ensuring that art-and writing and talking about art-is able to continue on the rising generation of storytellers, inside and outside of institutions, getting the funding and support they need to paint a brighter picture for the part.56What challenge is the author trying to tackle? (No more than 10 words)_____________________________________________________________________________57What does the underlined word “intimidated” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? (1 word)_____________________________________________________________________________58In the author’s opinion, what should the museums and galleries do?
