That could all be set to change as one company has revealed design for 35 cities that could operate both on the surface of the ocean and underwater.Using a number of advanced technologies, the 36 spheres could house 5,000 people and also perform 37 on the sea floor. These concepts were drawn up by the Shimizu Corporation in Tokyo, teaming up with two other organizations.Their design is for several vast globes known as Ocean Spirals (螺旋式) dotted over the ocean that could be submerged (浸没)in bad weather, down the center of a huge spiral structure that sinks to depths of up 2.5 miles. The spiral would form a path nine miles to a building on the ocean floor, which could serve as a 38 development factory that could collect rare metals and rare earths.Shimizu says that micro organisms called “methanogens” could be used to turn carbon dioxide 39 at the surface into methane. Meanwhile, the wide difference in water temperatures and 40 between the top and the bottom of the ocean could be used to 41 power. If construction begins soon, the first Ocean Spiral could be built by 2030. Each globe would have on board hotels, residential areas and commercial space. “The company in corporation with many organizations has spent two years in 42 the project working with technologies we think will be reliable in the future,” said a Shimizu spokesman. Women work alongside men in the fields, in the factories, in the offices and then 44 home—not to put their feet up in front of the television like their husbands, but to set dinner on the table and 45 their families. There is nothing women cannot 46 I won’t debate that women are superior to men or inferior to men. I’ll simple say that to be a woman is one of the greatest honors that can be accorded to a person. To be a woman is to be blessed with the natural 47 , understanding, and supernatural love of a mother. To be a woman is to be simultaneously strong and soft in body. To be a woman is to have the possibility of being 48 .There is nothing women cannot deal with. Women today need to realize that. Especially in today’s world societies where women 49 receive equal rights as men, women need only to make the most of their talents and assets in order to get what they want. Women must simply remember that they are capable forces to be reckoned with and that they have a right to participate in the activities of the world. They must be forceful, determined, and assertive. They cannot shy back and accept the minor jobs that men don’t 55 and leave for them. If women want to be kindergarten teachers, that’s wonderful. Kindergarten teachers are important and 56 members of the community. If women want to stay at home and simply mothers, that’s fantastic. As(A)The teacher who did the most to encourage me was, as it happens, my aunt. She was Myrtle C. Manigault, the wife of my mother’s brother Bill. She taught me in second grade at all-black Summer School in Camden, New Jersey.During my childhood and youth, Aunt Myrtle encouraged me to develop every aspect of my potential, without regard for what was considered practical or possible for black females. I liked to sing; she listened to my voice and pronounced it good. I couldn’t dance; she taught me the basic dancing steps. She took me to the theatre—not just children’s theatre, but adult comedies and dramas—and her faith that I could appreciate adult plays was not disappointed. My aunt also took down books from her extensive library and shared them with me. I had books at home, but they were all serious classics. Even as a child I had a strong liking for humour, and I’ll never forget the joy of discovering Don Marquis’s Archy & Mehitabel through her. Most important, perhaps, Aunt Myrtle provided my first opportunity to write for publication. A writer herself for one of the black newspapers, she suggested my name to the editor as a “youth columnist”. My column, begun when I was fourteen, was supposed to cover teenage social activities—and it did—but it also gave me the freedom to write on many other subjects as well as the habit of gathering material, the discipline of meeting deadlines, and, after graduation from college six years later, a solid collection of published material that carried my name and was my passport to a series of writing jobs.Today Aunt Myrtle is still an enthusiastic supporter of her “favourite niece”. (C) Suppose you become a leader in an organization. It’s very likely that you’ll want to have volunteers to help with the organization’s activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.
Let’s begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.
People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people’s wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g., “I volunteer because it’s important to me”) to an external factor (e.g., “I volunteer because I’m required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.
Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”.
Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am.”Consistent with the researchers’ expectations, they found a positive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity.... Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity”.
65. People volunteer mainly out of ______ .
A. academic requirements B. social expectations
C. financial rewards D. internal needs

67. What is most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work
A. Individual differences in role identity. B. Publicly identifiable volunteer T-shirts.
C. Role identity as a volunteer. D. Practical advice from researchers.
68. What is the best title of the passage
A. How to Get People to Volunteer B. How to Study Volunteer Behaviors
C. How to Keep Volunteers’ Interest D. How to Organize Volunteer Activities (D) 1. While awareness and mastery of skills are important steps in any learning process, it is only when conscious skills are put to work that you will experience the involvement and excitement that accompany personal growth. The bicycle, the teenager learning to drive, the adult preparing to buy a house---all experience a good deal of anticipation, but the anticipation pales next to the excitement of first communicating verbally or riding a bicycle solo or taking that first drive or moving into that first home. In other words, social interaction is the highest degree of personal involvement, the logical peak experience towards what awareness and mastery lead. 2. More than any other experience it is social interaction by which a person defines, expands, and develops his own personality. Therefore, the more involved you are, the more experiences you have, the greater will be the actualization of your personality. If, for example, you are an active person in your community, your personality will express this activity by its positive and outgoing nature. If, on the other hand, you are passive, merely allowing yourself to be acted upon without any involvement in the day-to-day activities of your community, you risk boredom and dullness. Much has been written about the “ mass man” and about the inability of the average citizen to affect his own destiny. Involved persons are not mass men or passive citizens. 3. Involvement in your community means developing your community and yourself by direct and relevant social interaction. Since this interaction could involve you in any and all of the functions of your community, we suggest here that you select for your involvement activities which are most meaningful to you. You might consider your future career plans, hobbies, or educational interests as guides for your decision. For once you begin to be involved in your community and once you experience your own growth in self-awareness through community awareness, you may very well find social interaction a life-time project, regardless of where your community may be or how it may change. 69. The underlined words “pales next to ” in the first paragraph most probably means ___.A. Is associated with B. Is most likely to C. Is next to D. Is less important than70. Which of the following is characteristic of an active person? A. Being involved in social interaction. B. Risking boredom and dullness. C. Allowing oneself to be acted upon. D. What would the author most probably write in the paragraph to follow ? tell us the difference between active citizens and passive ones.
