AshLynn Marracino’s dad died of a brain aneurysm(动脉瘤)in 2010. Since then, it has become something of a tradition for the 16-year-old teenager to mark his birthday by penning him a letter and sending it on a balloon. And this year, she received an unexpected reply. The balloon was sent sailing into the sky, floating(漂浮)436 miles to the city of Auburn.
According to KCBS, Ashlynn’s dad was in prison until she reached the age of 10, and he only had one year with her before his death. The TV station reported that her letter read, “I’ve been playing softball for 11 years now. Can you believe it ? I hope you helped me out with all those home runs. I don’t like how I never had you in my life. It’s not fair. Show me a sign please. Anything to let me know you are there. I miss you so much and I want you back.”
Restaurant owner Lisa Swisley discovered the deflated(泄气的)balloon and decided to give the teenager a touching surprise. Lisa wrote, “You have missed so much and I miss you. And I love you, miss you like crazy.”
Lisa shared the letter on a Pay It Forward Facebook page, designed to recognize and improve acts of kindness and goodwill. Speaking to ABC News, Lisa said, “I thought it would be cool to send her something to show my respect. I jumped on a Pay It Forward page I follow on Facebook and asked people to help.” In an unbelievable show of support, good-natured strangers have sent scores of cards and packages at Lisa’s request. The restaurant owner and the teenager have also spoken over Skype.
Ashlynn, who wrote the letter for her dad’s January 6 birthday, told KCBS, “ While I was writing it, I was just crying so much and then when I let it go, I just kind of calmed down and I watched it go, and I didn’t think anybody would find it.”

Imagine you’ve just arrived in a new place and don’t know anybody yet. Someone smiles at you. You smile back. Your heart leaps because you realize this person could be a potential new friend. Your imagination runs wild, dreaming of all the fun times you’ll have together, chewing the fat over coffee, lunch and dinner.
You become so excited that in the first few minutes of talking you tell him/her everything — what you had for breakfast, how nervous you’re to be in this new place, and how you felt when your favorite goldfish died. But then you suddenly realize you’ve gone too far and that there’s no going back. You’ve committed the biggest social crime in the books — you over-shared.
Researchers have found over-sharing your personal information too quickly is a kiss of death to new friendships. A recent article highlights(强调)that it’s possible to establish a close bond with someone in as little as 45 minutes but this is only possible when the connection is built gradually by each person sharing a little bit more of themselves in turn. This theory was tested in an agreement called “Fast Friends” created by Arthur Anon, a professor from New York. In it, two people were put in a room together with three sets of 12 questions. The questions must be taken in order, with each person taking turns to answer them.
Questions in the first set were mild and only slightly personal, like “Would you like to be famous?” But questions in the next set were more personal, like “What’s your most terrible memory?” The final set of questions was deeply personal, like “When did you last cry in front of another person?” As Anon told, “If you disclose too much too fast, you put someone off.” It’s important that a relationship is built on mutual(共同的)benefit and for each person to be talking. A key sign you’re over-sharing is when you’re the only one talking.
To be close to someone, it’s also necessary that you’re both willing to open up, but it’s important that each person gives the other space and time to do so. Giving away mutual information gradually is a good choice.
28. To establish a close relationship with someone, you should __________.
A. talk as much as possible B. share everything with him/her
C. be the only one talking D. give him/her space and time
29. The underlined part in Paragraph 1 most probably means __________.
A. Drinking tea or coffee B. Talking happily and relaxedly
C. Eating the fat meat D. running quickly
30. According to the passage, which of the following questions is deeply personal?
A. What is the weather like in your hometown?
B. What is your dream in the senior high school?
C. What do you think of our national football team?
D. Do you remember the situation you felt stupid before your friends?
31. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Take Turns to Share Between New Friends.
B. Share Everything With Friends.
C. Be Talkative While Making New Friends.
D. Be Friendly to a Potential New Friend.
D
You can’t always forecast(预测)a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should lead to you getting wet. That’s why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post(柱子)with its own rain-sensing umbrella.
The designer says he got the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “ Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be suitable to have a canopy(伞篷)built into a street lamp,”he said.
The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器)then make sure that the umbrella offers pedestrians(行人)shelter whenever it starts raining.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a low speed, in order not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike(袭击). Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Installed(安装)at two meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
32. For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?
A. To forecast a heavy rain.
B. To check the weather forecast.
C. To protect people from the rain.
D. To get people to take an umbrella.
33. What do we know from Belyaev’s words in Paragraph 2?
A. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.
B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.
C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.
D. He came up with his creation from an experience in the rain.
34. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the Lampbrella?
A. Its moving speed. B. Its safety.
C. Its installation. D. Its appearance.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.
B. The designer will open a company to promote his product.
C. The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.
D. The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.
