On January 22, 2022, the British-Belgian 19-year -old, Zara Rutherford, successfully landed her two-seat micro light aircraft back at the Kortrijk Wevelgem Airport, from where she had departed 155 days ago, fulfilling her dream to be the youngest woman to fly around the world solo.
“I feel excited not only to break the Guinness World Record, but also to diminish the gender
gap by 11 years between the current youngest male record holder Travis Ludlow 18 at the time of his record, and the previous female record holder Shaesta Waez, who was 30 when she completed her “Dreams Soar“ around the-world flight. ”Rutherford wrote on her blog.
Rutherford's journey crossing five continents and 52 countries began on August 18, 2021. She encountered numerous unexpected delays along the way. They included an unscheduled stop in Redding. California, due to wildfires and a month-long stop in Nome, Alaska, to renew her Russian visa. She also faced several challenges in the air. When flying from Iceland to Greenland, Rutherford lost radio contact with her ground team for much of the 3-hour flight. The incidents also resulted in her having to cross over Russia in sub-zero temperatures. The hardest part was flying over Siberia- it was extremely cold and if the engine broke down, she'd be hours away from rescue. Despite the severe difficulties, the determined young pilot never gave up on her dream.
Rutherford grew up around airplanes. Her British father flies commercially, while her Belgian mother is a recreational pilot. The young girl began learning how to fly at age 14 and obtained her aviators license in 2020. With her goal of flying around the world accomplished, Rutherford now has her sights set even higher. She wants to become an astronaut and explore space.
She hopes that her journey will encourage more young women to pursue careers in aviation. Currently the number of female pilots is just 5 percent. Rutherford says It's an easy thing to say, but just go for it. If you don't try and see how high you can fly, then you'll never know."

Elizabeth wouldn't walk or talk as an infant. Angela's left leg was so enlarged that it hurt to stand. Emma needed a breathing machine just to sleep. Their suffering may take different forms, but their stories share a common thread: Neither they nor their families knew what was actually causing these issues.
Undiagnosed diseases are more common than you might think. Tens of millions of Americans likely suffer from disorders they cannot name. For many, the symptoms are minor. But in some cases, patients come to their doctors with serious problems caused by diseases that challenge medical knowledge.
Those cases are precisely where the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN) steps in. Established in 2008, the UDN s mission is to provide answers for patients with diseases that doctors are unable to diagnose. Anyone can apply to the program and the UDN works hard to screen every application it receives.
Today, the UDN covers 12 clinical sites around the country, and has evaluated over 1,400 patients. More than 400 of those patients have received a diagnosis thanks to the UDN. In some of these cases, the network is able to match a patient with an already known condition. In others, UDN researchers must work to describe an entirely new disease and enter it into the medical dictionary. The program has added at least 25 entirely new diseases in this way. Additionally, the UDN covers the cost of the tests, meaning patients aren’t burdened with crushing medical debt.
This kind of groundbreaking work helps more than just the patients themselves. Insights from studying rare diseases offer new knowledge about the human body that can benefit all of us. For example, the discovery of statins, a class of drugs commonly recommended today to help regulate high blood pressure, arose from the study of a rare genetic disorder.
“I think they've really advanced and changed the whole model for how we approach many of these illnesses," says Anne Pariser, director of the Office of Rare Diseases Research. She says the UDN's multidisciplinary approach---bringing different specialists together to talk about challenging cases---has helped advance the field of rare disease research, especially when it comes to genetic diseases.
Living with a disease without a name can be its own kind of suffering. “You grow up feeling like, I'm in this, crazy, all by myself, and no one really understands me," says Angela Moon, a UDN participant. For patients like her, the UDN offers hope for treatment, but also for finally being seen.
8. The purpose of the first paragraph is to
A. arouse the readers' interest in the UDN
B. give a vivid description of rare diseases
C. introduce the background for the UDN's founding
D. raise a complicated problem that will be solved later
9. The fourth paragraph mainly talks about
A. the way the UDN is operated nationwide
B. the progress the UDN has made so far
C. the reasons why the UDN is so popular
D. the development stages the UDN has gone through
10. What can be learned about Angela Moon?
A. She used to live in despair.
B. She failed to identify with others.
C. She is receiving treatment now.
D. There will be a cure for her condition.
11. What can be inferred about the UDN's work mode1?
A. It has helped spread the knowledge of undiagnosed diseases.
B. It prioritizes participants privacy over solving medical mysteries.
C. It is specifically designed to deal with challenging genetic diseases.
D. It emphasizes close cooperation between specialists in separate fields.
D
After Scott Kelly spent a year in space, his genetic expression changed, according to a NASA study that compared the bodily changes between the astronaut and his identical twin, who stayed on Earth while Kelly was aboard the International Space Station. About 7 percent of Kelly's gene activity has yet to "return to normal” --almost two years after his yearlong spaceflight mission came to an end. Kelly has since retired from NASA.
The Twins Study, as it's been called, looked at what happened to Kelly - both physiologically and psychologically - before, during and after his trip in space, and then compared that data to Kelly's twin brother, Mark Kelly, also a retired NASA astronaut.
Unlike his brother who spent months at a time in space, Mark's missions were on the shorter side. His last--and longest--mission, which took place in 2011, lasted 15 days.
“By measuring large numbers of the brother's metabolites, cytokines (代谢物、细胞活素) and proteins, researchers learned that spaceflight is associated with oxygen deprivation (匮乏) stress, increased inflammation (炎症), and nutrient changes that affect gene expression," NASA said.
Although most of the biological changes Kelly experienced in space disappeared in the hours and days (and in some cases? weeks) after his return to Earthy, NASA said some changes appear to have continued. While 93 percent of his genetic expression has returned to normal, several hundred “space genes” still have changed activity levels, the data suggests, which, NASA said, could indicate “longer-term changes" in genetic expression caused by the stresses of spaceflight.
NASA said the research could provide important knowledge of the effects of long-term spaceflight on the human body, and that it will influence its planning for a mission to Mars, which would see astronauts spending some three years in space.
Reacting to the news of the study results, Kelly expressed amazement at his body's changes, and also used the opportunity to make fun of his brother.“This could be good news," he joked on Twitter. “I no longer have to call Mark my identical twin brother anymore.
12. What can be learnt about Mark Kelly?
A. He's still working for NASA.
B. He has only been to space once.
C. He hasn't gone on a spaceflight mission yet.
D. He never stayed in space for a whole month.
13. What does NASA's research show about genetic expression changes?
A. They’re dangerous to astronauts.
B. Most of them won't last very long.
C. They’re mainly caused by psychological stress.
D. Some can occur during short-term spaceflight.
14. What can we know about the Twins Study?
A. It involved many twin participants.
B. It ended soon after Scott Kelly's last spaceflight.
C. It only studied Scott Kelly's physical changes.
D. It will be valuable to NASA's Mars mission.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Mark Kelly will lose his twin brother soon B. Scott Kelly always looks on the bright side.
C. Scott Kelly doesn't like his twin brother.
D. Scott Kelly seems to have a sense of humor.

How do people analyze and solve worry problems? The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis. The three steps are:
●Get the facts
Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can't possibly attempt to solve your problem intelligently. Without the facts, all you can do is wandering around in confusion. It's not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding high. 16
When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person. 17 You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to argue. Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between.
18
Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about it? Here is what I am going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision.
●Act on that decision.
19 How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry. 20 If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself:' “It is so; it cannot be otherwise." Don t permit little things to ruin your happiness. Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness.
A. Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth.
B. But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way.
C. There comes a time when you must decide and never look back!
D. Analyze the facts.
E. Accept what cannot be avoided.
F. This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence.
G. Unless you take your action, all your fact-finding and analysis is a sheer waste of energy.

Dear Paul,
I really can't thank you very much for your invitation.
I do want to accept them and take this opportunity to introduce traditional Chinese paintings to foreign friends, but I'm sorry to inform you that I can't. The reason is because I am busy preparing myself for the coming College Entrance Examination. As for the introduction speech, I strongly recommend my friend Anna, that is the most suitable choice to take my place on next Sunday. She begun to learn paintings at an early age and has good knowledge of traditional Chinese paintings. However, her active personality and perfect speaking English will help make your activity a success.
Sorry again for any inconvenient caused by my absence and all the best wishes to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
