“Amy! Milk!" Mama called.
Milk. It was Amy's turn to get it. Amy sighed and shut her first- aid (急救) book.
Amy tied the cow close to a tree. Somewhere down the mountain, some volunteer doctors were teaching medical skills to village nurses. Amy heard Betty drive off hours ago. "She should have taken me with her. She thinks I'm too young." Amy thought. “But she's wrong. I am already 15.
Amy carried the milk back to Mama, then wandered up the road. Roy, a village boy, was trying to stand on a horse’s back. “No wonder they don't trust kids with anything important," Amy thought.
She had just turned away when she heard a heavy fall and a few cries. Roy was on the ground. “Roy!" The kids nearby ran towards him. “Get Betty," one said. Amy shook her head. “Betty's gone to the city."
The kids didn't know what to do. Amy ran to Roy and saw one of his legs out of shape. A broken leg! She remembered what the first-aid book said about it.
“Victor!"" Amy called to one of the boys. “Go get Roy's mama, and find someone with a truck." She turned to the others. “Give me your shirts. We need something to tie his leg with."
Amy then found a strong, straight stick. She carefully wrapped the shirts around Roy's leg and the stick. Roy cried out in pain. “I know it hurts," Amy said softly. “But this will hold it still until you get to the hospital."
When Amy was done, she looked up and saw Roy's mama and a man watching beside a truck. "Thank you, Amy," Roy's mama said. Amy helped them lift Roy into the truck, then they drove down the hillside towards the hospital.
The next day, Betty came to Amy's home. “I heard what you did," Betty said. "You kept your head in an emergency. That's an important skill."
Amy's face turned red. “I was afraid ...”
Betty shook her head. "It's OK for a nurse to be afraid, as long as she has a clear head. The volunteer doctors are coming tomorrow with vaccines. We need some more hands. Can you help?"
“I'd love to." Amy replied at once.
“Come early, then. There is a lot to learn."
Amy smiled. “I'll bring my first-aid book."

How would you like to build a time machine? Paper, sticks, glue and string are all you need. Put them together to build a kite. A kite connects you to the past.
No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia. Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2,000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth.
In China, people also used kites during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy camp. The enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.
About 1,300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. So kites filled the skies there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During foods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are a passion all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.
Over the years, Kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, thermometers were tied to kites to measure temperatures. In 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do.
Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.
Since the ancient Chinese first set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites. Kites give us ways to celebrate, relax and explore. So go fly a kite! Enjoy the feeling of wonder that kite flyers have felt for centuries.

John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
Dear David,
How time flies! It's been 3 months since I came to China. I'm having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I've completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I'd like to share some with you.
In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting and Chinese clay art. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.
Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn't appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world.
Lastly, I’d like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals—the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.
If you’d like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.
Best wishes!
Yours,
John

In the past, I thought I was terrible at many things, such as math, French and science. Although I was good at drawing, I wasn’t the best in my art class. I wanted to find out who I was, what I liked, and how I could do it better. So, that winter, I took a notebook and kept my diary. When I filled that notebook, I started another one, and then another.
Keeping a diary helps a lot. Studies have shown that people who keep a diary sleep and feel better. It helps people remember what once happened such as dreams, friendships and happiness. Writing about bad feelings can also help brains get over them and move on. Personally, I learn better about myself and my relationships with others by keeping a diary. For example, when I am fighting with my dad, I’ll try writing from his point and it works! If I want to compare myself with my classmates, I’ll write something like, “I might not have clear skin, but I like my eyes.”
Right about now, you might be thinking: it sounds great, but I’m not a good writer; or I’d love to keep a diary, but my handwriting is terrible. Don’t worry! Keeping a diary is not like doing your homework—there are no rules, so do whatever feels best.
63. What was the writer good at in the past?
A. Math. B. French. C. Science. D. Drawing.
64. What does the underlined word “them” refer to (指的是)?
A. Studies. B. Bad feelings. C. Friendships. D. Brains.
65. What is the second paragraph (段落) mainly about?
A. Reasons for fighting with Dad. B. Rules of comparing with others.
C. Ways of having clear skin. D. Advantages of keeping a diary.

I think there are several reasons that suggest developing robots is a waste of money.
In San Diego recently $ 325,000 was spent on inventing a robotic squirrel to do some scientific experiments. The research proved that squirrels are able to scare away snakes by wagging (摇动) their tails. Do you need a robotic squirrel to work this out?
What about AIBO, a robotic pet, developed in Japan? In Japanese aibou means “buddy”. These pets have been developed at huge cost mainly to provide entertainment. They’ve been used in movies and music videos. Universities have used them for educational purposes. However, in 2006 the company stopped producing these robotic pets in order to save money. Was it worth a lot of money?
Then there’s NAO, a robot which has been developed by a French company. Its main purpose is to make life easier for humans. It speaks 19 languages and has its own personality. It can tell children a story, help in the classroom or the home, or act as a companion to those people who need someone to be with. A fully developed one costs $ 16,000. Is that value for money? Who can afford it anyway?
There may be good reasons why it is worth developing robots, but so far I haven’t thought of any.
27. What does the underlined word “companion” in Paragraph 4 mean in Chinese?
A. 公司 B. 机构 C. 对手 D. 伙伴
28. What is the true fact about the robots mentioned?
A. The robotic squirrel is needed by every scientist to do some research.
B. AIBO wasn't made any more because it only provided entertainment.
C. A fully developed NAO may tell kids stories in different languages.
D. All the three types of robots used to be produced at a very low cost.
29. What does the writer think of developing robots?
A. It can help bring people a lot of fun.
B. It has advantages in many ways.
C. It may be useful but costs too much.
D. It is worth a great deal of money.

Robots Are Now Teaching English!
Get ready. Robots are about to invade our classroom. From Korea to Japan to the United States, schools are putting English-speaking robots in front of their students. In Korea, robots are the new teaching assistants in a number of preschools and kindergartens. The young students say that the robots are fun, but are these children really learning anything?
I don't think a computer will ever be able to do what a teacher does. A teacher has to be able to respond to students as individuals (个体) . ________, and a teacher has to change his or her teaching style to fit the needs of the student. I seriously doubt that a computer will ever be able to do this even though the big data (数据) is widely used in the world.
Sara says:
In my opinion, schools should spend money training human teachers rather than buying robots. Research shows that children learn more from real speakers than from recorded conversations.
Keiko says:
I don't think you can learn a language without real human interaction. After all, robots cannot think as humans do.
Hassan says:
Robots might be able to help people learn a language, but I don't think they should replace teachers because robots are just machines without human feelings.
Nancy says:
I think robots might be very helpful in the classroom. A child might be less afraid to make a mistake in front of a robot than in front of a real person.

One day, a couple wanted to buy a tea cup. So they went into a shop. They saw a beautiful one there. They asked, “May we see that? We've never seen such a beautiful one.” As the shopkeeper handed it to them, suddenly the tea cup spoke. “You don't understand,” it said, “Once I was red and looked ugly. I was rolled and struck (捶打) over and over by my master. I shouted out, 'Let me alone.' But he only smiled, ‘Not yet.’ Then I was put on a wheel which was moving, and suddenly I was pushed to move around and around. ‘Stop!’ I cried. But my master only shook his head and said, ‘Not yet.’ Then he put me in the oven. I was fired at a very high heat. I wondered why he wanted to burn me, and I cried and knocked at the door. But he just shook his head.”
“Finally, the door opened. He put me on the table, and I began to become cool. Then I was polished. After that, my master brushed and painted me all over. How terrible the smell was! I thought I would die. ‘Stop!’ I cried. He only shook his head, ‘Not yet.’ Then suddenly he put me into the second oven. This oven was twice as hot as the first one and I couldn't breathe at all. I begged (哀求). However, my master shook his head and said, ‘Not yet.’ I nearly lost hope. Just then, the door opened. He took me out and put me on the table again.”
“One hour later he handed me a mirror and said, ‘Look at yourself.’ And I did so. I was surprised and said, ‘That’s not me. Why am I so beautiful?’ ‘I want you to remember,’ My master said, ‘without those pains, you would never be a perfect product.’’’

This 12-year-old Girl Built a Robot to Find Plastics in the Ocean
Anna Du was walking along the beach when she noticed plastics there. She reached down to pick them up, and quickly realized there were many more tiny pieces than she could deal with. It seemed impossible to clean them all up.
Du, 12 years old at the time, tried to solve the problem like any good scientist—first, by doing a little research. That’s how she learned that 8 million tons of plastics end up in the oceans every year.
Then she got to work building something that could help solve the problem: a remote-operated vehicle (遥控潜水器), or ROV. Her ROV can move through water and find plastics on the ocean floor.
The actually cool part of Du’s ROV is the detection (探测) system. She uses a camera along with three different kinds of light to find the plastics. She also uses visible (可见的) light to find unnatural colors that might make the plastics stand out.
“She has a very good engineering sense to break down a problem like this and then go after it,” says engineer Casey Machado. “It sounds simple, but it’s a level of thinking that’s really amazing.”
Du started attending public events and workshops at a university when she was five years old, and so she picked up the engineering skills necessary to build her ROV. She says actually getting her ROV to move through water well was not easy. She failed many times, but she never gave up trying and testing.
When asked about future plans, she mentions wanting to address the effects of climate(气候) change. “I think there are a lot of problems that could be solved with new inventions,” says Du.
Du thanks her parents, who for years have taken her to student outreach activities, for supporting her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She says she has been able to meet students and scientists there.
“I know I want to be an engineer because I like building things to help solve world problems,” says Du. “But I’m not sure what kind of engineer I want to be yet.”
34. What did Anna Du notice while walking along the beach?
35. How old was Du when she did a little research to solve the problem?
36. What can Du’s ROV do?
37. Why does Du want to be an engineer in the future?
38. What made Du succeed in building her ROV?
【参考答案】
34. Plastics./ She noticed plastics.
35. She was twelve years old.
36. Du’s ROV can move through water and find plastics on the ocean floor.
37. Because she likes building things to help solve world problems.
38. A good engineering sense, the spirit of never giving up and the support from her parents.

Jiaozi, also known as Chinese dumplings, is a must-have during holidays in Northern China. It dates back to ancient times.
Jiaozi is one of the most important foods in Chinese New Year. Since jiaozi is in the shape of ancient Chinese gold or silver ingots (银锭), it symbolizes wealth (象征着财富). Traditionally, the members of a family get together to make dumplings on New Year’s Eve. They may hide a coin in one of the dumplings. The person who finds the coin will be likely to have good luck. As the Spring Festival marks the start of a new year, people choose to eat jiaozi in the hope of having a good future in the coming new year.
Based on your taste, you can make different kinds of Chinese dumplings using different fillings. There is no set rule as to what makes dumpling fillings. They can be anything from vegetables, meat or seafood. Whatever the fillings are, the wrapping (包) skill needs to be exquisite (精美的) to make jiaozi good-looking.
As China is a country with vast territory (幅员辽阔), there are differences in different areas in ways of making jiaozi or even serving it. For example, dumpling wrappers are made with a rolling stick in Beijing and Hebei Province, while in some parts of Inner Mongolia, wrappers are hand-pressed.

“The only constant (不变) in life is change. “Heraclitus said in about 500 B. C. That could be more true today. 54 Technology is out of date almost by the time you buy it. We get plenty of information every day. Francis Bacon said. “Knowledge is power.” In fact, there is more information in a newspaper than he would have experienced in his whole life.
Why are we afraid of change? 55 After all, who knows what new dangers might appear? However, change is also the only way of development. Nobody can stop it in life. Luckily, our brains become stronger when meeting the unknown. 56 To be more imaginative and creative, you should look for and find environments you have no experience with.
57 For example, try a new restaurant, or go to a play or a concert you normally wouldn’t attend. Small changes can help you gradually get used to uncertainty (不确定) . So when bigger things happen, you’ll be more fully prepared for them.
People who fear change often stick to a certain lifestyle. They believe they can control the future by doing so. 58 If you can move from just accepting it to actively finding it out and dealing with it, you will be successful.
A. People are thirsty for knowledge.
B. That’s because our brains want to protect us.
C. But change comes whether you ask for it or not.
D. We live in a world that is changing every minute.
E. You can learn how to face the changes in daily life.
F. Dealing with the unexpected needs imagination and creativity.

Hopes, ambitions (抱负), dreams. How many of yours will you achieve? When you look back at your life in the future, will you have good memories of all the things that you did? Or will you regret all the things that you didn't do?
Of course, there's no easy road to success, but one thing is certain: success won't come if you don't do anything. So how do you do it? This four-step model will help you to make your dreams come true.
Step 1: 32
What would you like to do? Write down all your ambitions. They may be very general, such as I would like to be fitter. I want to be famous. or It would be nice to have more friends. Or they may be more specific, like I've always wanted to play a musical instrument.
Step 2: 33
Now you need to do two things:
1. Choose one or two ambitions. If you try to do everything, you won't do anything.
2. Set a time limit (限定). This is very important, because you will have a goal and you will also know when you have reached it.
So, for example, I would like to be fitter. in Step 1 now becomes I will be fit enough to join a half-marathon race by the end of August.
Step 3: 34
Now that you've made your choice, what are you actually going to do to achieve your goal? So, in our example, I will be fit enough to join a half-marathon race by the end of August. becomes I'm going to join a running club. or I'm going to go jogging three times a week.
Step 4: 35
This is when you change your intentions (意图) into specific actions. Prepare to do something at a specific time. If you don't do this, your dreams and plans will just stay as dreams and plans. So now I'm going to join a running club. becomes I'm meeting the president of the Cheetahs Running Club on Monday evening at 5∶30.
Don't let your ambitions die. Follow this four-step plan and make your dream come true.
A. Change I would like to… to I will. . .
B. Change I did. . . to I do. . .
C. How to be successful
D. Change I'm going to. .. to I'm doing.. . on. .. at. ..
E. Think about your ambitions
F. Change I will. . . to I'm going to. . .

Confucius' life and thought
Confucius (551—479 BC) was a great thinker and teacher in the Spring and Autumn Period of China. He was born in Qufu, capital of the state of Lu (part of Shandong). He acted as an official (官员)there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. And he tried to teach people that peace was very important for a healthy society. However, it was not until the rule of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty (156-87 BC) that his ideas were finally put into practice. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius' teachings formed the base of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues (美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius' thought is considered to have been the necessity of Eastern thought.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren (kindness, charity), yi (fairness), li (ceremony, tradition), zhi (knowledge), and xin (trust). Another virtue is xiao. Xiao is the duties a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, obeying (服从), and taking care of one's parents in their old age. Xiao forms the base of a peaceful society. And he is the final goal according to his thought. It means social peace.
Here's one of Confucius' famous sayings, "Do not do to others as you do not wish to be done to you." Another saying of his is" In the company of two others, I can always find one worthy of being my teacher. "
It is clear that Confucius' thought will continue to be a necessary part of Chinese culture. And it will continue to do something good to the development of China and even the whole world.

We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day, and it is harmful to our environment. Repeat these three words daily: reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce
Reduce means "use less". Do not waste things. It saves money and causes less pollution. Do not order more food than you can finish.当你不需要的时候就把灯关上。Before you buy something new, think whether it is really necessary because maybe the old one is just as good!
Reuse
Reuse means "use again". Use things for as long as possible. Look after them so that they will last. Repair them if possible. Do not throw them away and buy new ones. Do not use paper cups or paper bags.
Recycle
Recycle means "change things into something else to be reused". We throw tons of rubbish away each year, and we have to make a change. Divide your rubbish into plastic, glass, paper and rubber. Develop a recycling policy for the whole community. Buy products such as recycled paper to help save trees.
