Last March a ship of NOAA (美国国家海洋和大气管理局) was traveling in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when the crew found a surprise on the sea.
It was a bright orange barrel (桶), 10 feet long and seven feet wide. The ocean current (洋流) was pushing it to the west very slowly. 72-year-old French adventurer Jean-Jacques Savin was on an Atlantic crossing in the barrel.
After 127 days and six hours at sea, Savin arrived in the Caribbean on May 2. Some joked and asked if the police were arresting (逮捕) him on arrival for being so crazy.
The Guinness Book of World Records lists more than 30 methods of crossing the 3,000-mile ocean. In 1952, Alain Bombard traveled alone from the Canary Islands to Barbados in a rubber boat. Before his journey, Savin had read Bombard’s book many times. He had also crossed Atlantic four times in a sailboat before.
In the resin-coated wood barrel, he created about 65 square feet of living space inside, including a small kitchen and sleeping area. The design was built to protect both against Atlantic’s waves and attacks from orca whales. Savin fed himself by catching fish. He brought along a water maker.
Although he originally believed he could float across the ocean in around 90 days, the trip was stalled by slow wind. He said the trip was calm except for eight nights of bad weather.
“Everything has end,” Savin said. “Finally, here I am at the end of this adventure.”
11. Why were the crew surprised on the NOAA ship?
A. They discovered new environment problems.
B. Savin was arrested after his journey.

12. According to the passage, what danger did Savin have to face on the sea?
a. his old age b. huge waves in bad weather c. having no experience of crossing the sea
d. attacks from orca whales e. without any food and water
A. a,b B. b,c C. b,d D. c,e
13. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. The NOAA’s ship saved Savin
B. Savin’s journey was inspired by Alain Bombard
C. Savin made a Guinness World Record
D. Savin spent around 90 days in his barrel

Climate change is a serious problem all over the globe. In order to prevent it, one of the best ways is to plant more trees. Because trees can take in carbon dioxide and prevent global warming.
“The earth is getting greener,” according to a recent study by Chi Chen. “China and India are doing a great job of ‘greening’ the world.”
Chi Chen, a doctor student at Boston University, has been working with NASA to monitor the earth’s vegetation (植被). He and his fellow researchers have used a special NASA camera to see how many new trees have grown, NPR reported.
Chi Chen and his team have found that China and India have greatly expanded (增加) their forest area. “China and India account for one-third of the earth’s expanded greening,” Chin Chen said in a statement.
The data they collected from 2000 to 2017 showed that China was responsible for 25 percent of the global increase in green vegetation during the period, according to CNN. That’s about one-quarter of the size of the entire Amazon rainforest.
The growth mainly resulted from forest protection and expansion programs that China created to fight soil erosion (水土流失) and air pollution, NASA said.
For example, since 1962,China has been planting trees in Saihanba in Hebei Province. It covers an area of 92,000 hectares (公顷), which was once a barren (贫瘠的) area. After overcoming many difficulties, forests have turned the area into China’s largest man-made forest.
Another example is the Mu Us Desert, one of four major deserts in China. It was once known for its sandstorms. But now, one-quarter of the desert has been turned into forest, Guangming Daily reported.
14. The passage probably comes from ________ in a newspaper.
A. Earth & Environment B. Job Postings

A. Planting more trees has slowed down global warming.
B. Asian countries are planting more trees than other countries.

16. What do we know from the passage?
A. Half of the earth’s forest area in China and India.
B. The earth’s green vegetation has increased by 25 percent.
C. The findings of Chi Chen’s team are based on 17 years of data.
D. Saihanba is the largest man-made forest in the world.

Four years ago when I was a boy of 11, I got into the biggest trouble as a kid. It was a Saturday morning. Both my parents were out, leaving me and my 10-month-old sister alone. Anyway, my sister was still asleep in her room. In fact I had the house to myself. I decided to do some drawing. Soon I gave up. Nothing was on TV, so I felt bored and touched the candles on the shelf … I had an idea! What would happen if I set fire to some kitchen paper? Well, of course it went on fire, but it wasn’t the tiny flame (火焰) as I’d expected, and it was not an easy thing for a boy of 11 to blow it out. I threw it on the floor, and then luckily got my dad’s boots (靴子) and stamped it out.
Although I thought I was safe, there was a big hole in my room. When my mum came home later, she smelt the smoke immediately. Luckily she dropped the shopping bag over the hole. I thought this meant she would never see it. However, after running round the house checking for a fire, she of course picked up the bag and saw the hole. Next I was grounded (关禁闭) and in trouble for months. Even though, the hole was still there, reminding me of what I did.

【详解】空处缺少“落得……下场”的表达,可用end up表示,由want to do sth可知,空处用动词原形。故填end;up。
44. Not only ________ he hear it, ________ also he saw it.
他不但听见了而且也看见了。
【答案】 ①. did ②. but
故填did;but。
45. Losing temper isn’t going to help and you should ________ your ________!

【答案】 ①. keep ②. cool
【解析】
【详解】should是情态动词,应该,后加动词原形,短语keep one’s cool“保持冷静”,故填keep;cool。

Save the Sharks!
Many have heard of shark fin soup. This famous and expensive dish is especially popular in southern China. But do you realize that you're killing a whole shark each time you enjoy a bowl of shark fin soup?
When people catch sharks, they cut off their fins and throw the shark back into the ocean. This is not only cruel, but also harmful to the environment. Without a fin, a shark can no longer swim and slowly dies. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in the ocean’s ecosystem. If their numbers drop too low, it will bring danger to all ocean life. Many believe that sharks can never be endangered because they are the strongest in their food chain. But in fact, around 70 million sharks are caught and traded in this industry every year. The numbers of some kinds of sharks have fallen by over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.
Environmental protection groups around the world, such as Wild Aid and the WWF, are teaching the public about “finning”. They have even asked governments to develop laws to stop the sale of shark fins. So far, no scientific studies have shown that shark fins are good for health, so why eat them? Help save the sharks!

【答案】Dear mayor,
Since COVID-19 broke out in Wuhan in early 2020, the number of people infected and patients who have died kept increasing. It is reported that the epidemic has something to do with the killing and selling of wild animals at the South China Seafood Market. With the decrease of wild animals, many animals are endangered. Even worse, some of them may disappear forever.
There is no doubt that hunting and killing wild animals have a bad influence. For one thing wild animals are killed because of their fur, and it causes the imbalance of nature. For another, due to the contact between humans and wild animals, epidemics like SARS and pneumonia may infect humans easily.
As far as I am concerned, something must be done to stop this illegal action. First, Nature Reserves are supposed to be built so as to offer more living space to wildlife. Second, make sure that people will never hunt wild animals for food, as they are a part of the environment. Third, it is right time that we should raise people’s awareness of protecting wildlife. In this way, we can build a harmonious society and ensure the sustainable development.
Thanks for your time.
Yours sincerely
