When I started using Chinese websites, I was a bit confused by their design. Popular sites like Taobao and Jingdong are very “busy” – they are covered in dozens of links and flashing banners (闪烁的横幅广告). They often include a wide variety of bright colors as well, contrasting (形成对比) with the simple colors of most Western websites.
So why are Chinese sites designed this way? Some say that Chinese web design hasn’t “caught up” to standard Western web design practices. But I don’t think this quite explains it. Some Chinese sites, such as Baidu, are quite clean-looking.
A more believable explanation has to do with the Chinese language. There are no capital letters or spaces in Chinese writing – speakers of other languages who are used to seeing these things might think that Chinese text looks very crowded.
Another thing that makes Chinese websites look so busy is the large number of links. Some sites might have hundreds of links on their front page. Again, there is a language-related explanation.
It is difficult to type Chinese characters on a Roman alphabet-based (基于字母的) keyboard. You have to type out each character using pinyin, which can be inconvenient for some people. So it’s easier to just click the link you want, instead of typing what you’re looking for.
Or perhaps it could just be that sometimes people prefer flashy busy websites. Browsing Jingdong is like stepping into a noisy, brightly-lit street market. So in this way, Chinese internet users might feel right at home when using these sites.
11. Baidu is mentioned because it is ________.
A. covered in dozens of links B. colorful and bright
C. clean-looking D. full of flashing banners
12. According to the passage, how might some people feel about having to use pinyin?
A. It’s interesting to use. B. It’s inconvenient. C. It’s too confusing. D. It’s easy to do.
13. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A variety of bright colors. B. The design of Chinese websites.
C. The difficulties of learning Chinese. D. The Chinese language.

五、阅读表达(共5小题,满分10分)
阅读短文,根据要求完成下面各小题。
Giving generously (慷慨地) and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others.
So why is it hard for some people to do?
Let me start with the idea of giving generously. I think people are reluctant (不情愿的) to be generous with others because they fear being used.
For example, my husband and I have family members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests (要求), but we rarely receive a “thank you”. Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I supposed we are. But when we give, we shouldn’t be giving for the purpose of getting praise. Rather, we should be giving because it’s a good thing to do. A “thank you” is merely the icing on the cake.
Everything that we have, from our ability to wake up each morning to the money in our bank account, is a gift. In return, the world asks us to use these gifts to help others, either by giving them our time or our resources. The good news is that when we live our lives being nice to others, our lives run more smoothly.
And at the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully. I truly believe that you cannot say “thank you” enough.
So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude. Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students. Just because a task is part of someone’s job doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t thank them for it. Words of appreciation make others feel good about themselves like nothing else.
It’s good for us to say “thank you”because we regularly need to remind ourselves of how lucky we are. And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days. If you are looking for a secret solution to improve your life, I can give you one: Give generously and receive gratefully.
47. Why might people not want to be generous toward others?
______________________________________________
48. What does the underlined phrase “the icing on the cake” probably refer to?
______________________________________________
49. What’s the writer’s opinion about helping others, according to Paragraph 4?

______________________________________________
【答案】47. Because they’re afraid of being used.

Hey Li Hua. Happy New Year!
I recently read something about how popular and significant the color red is in China. Why do so many Chinese people like it? When, where, and how do you use it? I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to say about this. Thanks !
Mike

【答案】例文
Hi Mike!
It’s great to hear from you. Yes, we do love red here in China – I’m quite happy to answer your questions about it and tell you a little bit about our culture.
Basically, people in China think that red stands for happiness and good luck. It has been an important color for us since ancient times. You can see it almost everywhere – on buildings, clothing, and even our national flag. It’s especially common to see red color during Spring Festival. We put red paper-cuts on our doors and windows during this holiday. Kids get red envelopes full of “lucky money” from their older relatives. I have a nice red dress myself. It’s one of my favorites. My parents gave it to me. I feel like it represents their love and best wishes for me.
That’s about it I hope you understand more about China’s love for red now!
