And when I 42 that both of my sons were born with mental illness (精神疾病), I found meaning in loving with them, caring for them, and 43 from them about love, joy and patience.
As I got 44 , I began to know that the meaning isn’t something that comes and goes. We should learn to create our own meaning. All we have to do is to love ourselves and 45 . It is love that gives life meaning.

Something unexpected happened in the summer of my eleventh year. A fire took away the home I had grown up in in the middle of the night. Thankfully, my parents, grandma, brothers and I were lucky enough to get out of it together with our dog. However, we had nothing but the night clothes. I spent the rest of that night with a friend of our family. I tried unsuccessfully to sleep in a bed in his house. I was too scared.
The next day my mom brought me a few T-shirts and two pairs of jeans that another friend gave to her. One pair of them was too short and the other pair was too long, but I didn’t care. At least I had some clothes again. My dad went back to our broken home to see what he could find. The only thing he could find was my mom’s rings.
To spend the summer, my dad rented (租借) us a house on the same road as our old house had been. As we moved in, our friends and our neighbors donated (捐赠) all they could to help us get back on our feet. There were more clothes, food, money, furniture (家具) and even some books for me to read. Love was around us.
Looking back now I am thankful for all we went through that summer because it taught me so much about life, love and people. It showed me that when you have nothing left but love, for the first time you see that love is enough.

Eating less meat is becoming more common all over the world. In the US, for example, there is a campaign (运动) called Meatless Mondays. The idea is to have meatless meals every Monday. By the end of 2018, 230 middle and primary schools in the US had joined this campaign, according to Southern Weekly. These schools give students a vegetarian breakfast and lunch every Monday.
How did Meatless Mondays become part of food culture in the West? The first reason is that it’s healthy. Many studies have shown that eating less meat is good for people’s health. “Vegetarian diets can lower the risk (风险) of fatness, heart disease (疾病) and cancer (癌症),” scientist Sharon Palmer told CNN. “Even going meatless one day a week can make a difference.”
▲ A study from Nature found that animal products (制品) create a lot of greenhouse gases (温室气体). 78 percent of total agricultural emissions (农业排放) are from them. If we eat less meat, it will be better for the environment.
In March this year, New York Mayor Bill De Blasio said that all public schools in New York City would join the Meatless Mondays campaign. Joining the campaign, he said, will help us stay healthy and keep our planet green for the future.

A. a newspaper B. a dictionary

What season is it in October? If you ask people from the UK, they will tell you it’s “autumn”. But if you go to the US, you will find that people use both “autumn” and “fall”. Why does this season have two names in English?
According to Dictionary.com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was the first to describe this season. During this season, crops (庄稼) would become ripe (成熟) and farmers would have a big harvest (丰收). So in old English, this season is simply called “harvest”.
Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. With fewer people farming, the word “harvest” became less useful. English speakers needed a different name for the season. They knew leaves (树叶) fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall ”for short.
But at the end of the 1600, autumn, from the French word “automne” and the Latin “autumuns”, came to England. It slowly took the place of “fall” as the word for this season.
At the same time, British people were making their first trips to North America. They brought both the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. That’s why today’s Americans have two names for one season.
57. People first used “________” to describe the season we see in October.
A. harvest B. fall C. autumn D. autumuns
58. In which order did the following happen?

③. People started calling the season “the fall of leaves”.
④. The word “autumn” came to England.
A. ①②④③ B. ①③④② C. ③①④② D. ③④①②
59. The main idea of this article is ________.
A. why the season has two names
B. what people did in the season
C. how English language is different from the past
D. when British people came to North America
60. What can you infer (推断) from the article?
A. British English comes from American English.
B. English language stays the same all the time.
C. Languages have to do with people’s everyday life.
D. The word “autumn” slowly took the place of “fall” for the season.

I was driving for business a few days ago. The sun was out, the radio was playing a happy song, I was singing along. Then it happened, however, the sweet sound of the music ended and the news began.
I drove on when the news started. Gas prices (油价) were getting high again. The race for the presidency (总统大选) was getting much tighter (紧张). Fights broke out when the fans of a sports team went crazy (疯狂的) as they were celebrating their team’s win.
Finally, I couldn’t stand it so I turned off (关掉) the radio. Silence seemed better than listening to anything else about the crazy and competitive (好胜的) world we live in. I slowed down as I went into a small town and watched the people as I drove by.
A man was helping an old lady out of a car and helping her walk into a store. A smiling woman was giving food to some birds in her backyard. A young man was walking along, carrying his 2-year-old daughter safely. He tickled (胳肢) her softly when she took the hat off his head and they both laughed. I laughed too as I looked at all of this kindness. Although the music was off, I felt my heart singing.
In truth, this world could use a little more kindness and a lot less competition. Kindness makes us all winners in life and shows us that we don’t have to beat others all the time.
