Being an Olympian (奥运会选手) demands focus, determination, and a competitive spirit. Plus, representing your country is a lot of pressure. However, two athletes recently showed the world another quality that is definitely worth championing.
Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi were competing in the high jump on Sunday when they reached a stalemate (僵局). Both men had managed to jump over a surprising 2.37 meters with no faults along the way. However, after three attempts neither managed the next level of 2.39 meters.
An Olympic official suggested a jump-off between the two friends and rivals (竞争对手) to determine who would get the gold medal. But Barshim had another plan to reward their efforts.
“Can we have two golds?” he asked the official.
The official agreed and the two men jumped for joy. This was the first time a gold medal had been shared since 1912. “He is one of my best friends, not only on the track, but outside the track. We work together. This is a dream come true.” shared Barshim.
The decision to share the medal was particularly meaningful to Tamberi. The Italian had suffered an ankle injury that prevented him from competing in the Rio Olympics in 2016, and it nearly put an end to his career altogether. So this year he brought along his cast to this year's Olympics with “Road to Tokyo 2021” to inspire him along the way.
For Barshim, the gold has topped off his already impressive medal collection, having received a bronze and a silver medal in 2012 and 2016 respectively.
Despite all the glory of receiving a gold medal for their countries, their achievement means so much more. These two individuals, trying to do their very best for their countries, have provided a wonderful example to all those competing in sports. They’ve summed up exactly what it means to take part in a global event with a generous and compassionate (有同情心的) spirit.
24.What happened to Barshim and Tamberi in the competition?
A.They quit the competition. B.They ended in a tie.
C.They set a new record. D.They ran out of strength.
25.What does the underlined word “jump-off” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
    A.Debate. B.Vote.
    C.Extra round. D.Celebration.
26.Why was the gold medal particularly meaningful to Tamberi?
A.It could bring him a lot of money. B.It could complete his medal collection.
C.It was a glory for his country. D.It may make up for his regret in 2016.
27.What does the author mainly want to convey in the text?
    A.The importance of sharing.
B.The considerate and sharing Olympic spirit.
C.The valuable and special team spirit.
D.The glory of winning gold medals.
    C
A single toy catches a child’s attention for a limited period of time, but a box of items that allows a child to build their own toys will catch their imagination for years to come. This brilliant idea already exists in real product form, and it's called Toyi.
Toyi is described as an eco-friendly creative building kit, and it recently won the well-known IF Design Award. It came from Istanbul, Turkish, where a young female designer named Elif Atmaca first came up with the idea for it when she wanted to help the kids living in disadvantaged areas. These children do not have access to the variety of interesting toys that wealthier children do.
Toyi Atmaca’s design allows children to transform what are around them into clever toys. It consists of sticks, junction parts, flexible connectors, toy body parts like feet, eyes, hands, and wheels that can be used to turn old water bottles, cups, boxes, towels, etc. into cute, clever, and unique playthings. This toy kit upcycles(升级利用) materials that would otherwise go to waste, turning a recycling bin into a treasure container.
“Our initial target was to deliver Toyi kits to only disadvantaged children in Turkish,” Atmaca told the media. But during a research conducted with around 300 children, .she realized that the restriction on being creative went beyond any boundary. “I saw that everything was planned and shaped by grown-ups, blocking the kids’ imagination in a significant way,” said Atmaca.
Atmaca concluded that each kid needed space where he or she could freely create. She explained the entire process should be left to kids’ creativity, reminding teachers and all grown-ups that child-led play was an excellent way for children to develop lifelong skills.
Toyi’s creators are now considering distributing the kits to as many children as possible around the world through different international NGOs. Atmaca notes that for each Toyi kit sold out, they will also donate one kit to a disadvantaged child through different partnerships around the world.
28.Why did Atmaca design Toyi at first?
A.To win the famous IF Design Award.
B.To protect the environment in Istanbul.
C.To help poor kids make their own toys.
D.To recycle all the waste in the dustbin.
29.Which is probably the product made with the toy kit of Toyi?
A.A six-armed “robot” from a water bottle. B.A computer with high technology.
C.A treasure container from a dustbin: D.A new picture of a young boy.
30.How do the toy kits help improve the children’s ability?
A.It provides the kids various types of toys.
B.It teaches the kids to share joys with others.
C.It changes the poor kids’ living conditions.
D.It offers space for the kids’ creative minds.
31.What is the new target for Atmaca and her partners?
A.Designing new toy kits for kids and adults.
B.Selling toy kits to every kid in the world.
C.Donating toy kits to more poor children.
D.Doing further research on the kids’ demands.
    D
To move visual technology into the future, sometimes it helps to make a little noise. Researchers have used sound waves to produce floating 3-D images, create a sense of touch and even supply a soundtrack.
Since the 1940s, scientists have toyed with the concept of acoustic levitation(声悬浮), the use of soundwave vibrations to trap tiny things in midair. The technology has gained greater capabilities in the past decade. Some researchers believe this improvement could lead to applications such as contributing to novel 3-D printing methods, or creating displays that would be visible from any angle without requiring a screen.
Other researchers have also worked on visual displays that use acoustic levitation. In addition to visuals, the system can also produce audible noise to give the display a soundtrack. And the ultrasound speakers can also concentrate vibrations in one spot so that a finger might feel a sense pushing back—a little like the object shown by the floating image is really there. Soundwaves create a 3-D display!
Display without a screen is remarkably useful. It means that everybody in the room can see the image—any angle, location—and that’s extremely helpful. As a communications system, such a display might one day allow users to chat with a 3-D projection(投影) of a person who can turn his or her head to follow as they move around a room.
The display will require a lot more work before you can install it in your living room, however. So far, this has been done in the research laboratory. We need to push it a little bit harder. We need to do more analysis to see if it would make sense to create a real display that people would have at home. The current system can only show simple graphics, such as a smiley face or figure eight, in real time.
Still, we are optimistic about the potential for this type of technology. If the system had only one speaker-covered surface instead of two, it could generate images that are bigger than the device itself. We can’t make a TV image that’s bigger than the TV—even a projector has to have a projection screen that’s bigger than the image itself. But with a volumetric(容积的) display, a small, portable device might produce a much larger picture. We can imagine, in the future, having volumetric displays in watches, for example, that create large images that just project out of your watch.
32.From the first two paragraphs soundwave vibrations can be used to _________.
    A.develop 3-D printer’s capabilities
B.catch very small objects in midair
    C.replace a creative display screen
D.compose soundtracks by making no noise
33.What do we know about display without a screen?
A.It is possible to see the image from any direction.
B.It has resulted in visual technology.
C.It is already ripe to create a real one at home.
D.It has yet to be tested in the research laboratory.
34.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
    A.Room for the technical improvement.
    B.Situations of the modern technology.
    C.Praise for the cutting-edge technology.
    D.Outlooks for the new technology.
35.What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Seeing is Believing—3-D Printing Methods Arrive
    B.Hearing Is Seeing—Sound Waves Create a 3-D Display
C.Advancing Sense of Touch—3-D Images Float in the Air
    D.Promoting TV Technology—Chat with 3-D Projections

W:Well, just between you and me.I think we have some real problems in this department.Don’t get me wrong. It has nothing to do with you,Frank.Everybody says that you’re an excellent manager.

W:You know,I’ve just finished some very interesting research for the newspaper about things people do in their spare time.
    M:Really? What did you learn?
M:Well,I talked to 20 people, and 19 of them watch TV.
    M:That’s interesting.I never watch it.Do you?
W:Not much.Anyway, about half of them,9 people play some kind of sport.
M:I’m not surprised.People are getting more exercise these days.
W:Yes.A few of them go to movies.
    M:Mm...I do,too.

W:Are you going somewhere or are you meeting someone?
M:I’m on my way to Washington, and you?
W:I’m on my way to San Francisco.
M:Really? I think San Francisco is probably the most exciting city in the US.
W:So do I.No other city has as many good restaurants or as much good music.
    M:Is San Francisco your hometown?
W:No,I’m from a very small town in Pennsylvania.I wouldn’t want to live there again either.I don’t like small town living very much.
M:Er...neither do I really. But small towns have their advantages, less traffic.
W:And friendly people. You know I’m beginning to feel homesick.By the way, where are you from?
    M:China.
W:China? But you speak English like a native speaker.I didn’t have any idea.
M:Oh,excuse me,it’s time for my flight.Well, nice talking with you.
    W:Me too.Bye.
    Text 10
M:Could you suggest some ways to bring family members closer together?
W:Well,I feel it is very important for families to have regular meals together. One of my good childhood memories was dinner with my parents and two sisters.Because my husband and I both work and our three children are busy with their studies,we seldom had a chance to get together as a family. But we thought it would be possible for us to sit down and enjoy meals together every week.First,we tried setting three fixed dates:Mondays,Wednesdays and Fridays. But almost everyone was unhappy. Then my son had the idea that everyone told me his or her most convenient days and I would choose the two best days. For a while, the children were still unhappy with the idea. They said they would rather spend the time with their friends playing sports.Gradually they began to see these evenings together as interesting and helpful. We loved a lot.We made plans for trips. We discussed each other’s problems. After a couple of months, anyone who had to miss a family meal felt regretful and now we all feel that we have been able to build stronger relationships within the family than we had before.

    作文范文:
    Dear classmates,
Knowing that our government is advocating the “double-lightening the burden” policy, whose intention is to ease study pressure, I’m writing to offer you some suggestions about how to get used to the new policy. It is universally acknowledged that there exist some aspects we need consider when putting the policy into effect.
To begin with, on no account can we ignore the importance of striking a proper balance between work and rest. In addition, make it a rule to form the habit of working out regularly, which is of great benefit to building up your strength and maintaining a good mindset. What’s more, there is no denying that a high value should be set on our time because reasonable time management will promote our effective learning to a great extent.
It is high time that measures should be taken to accustom ourselves to the new situation. I hold the firm belief that we all will be admitted into our ideal universities in the upcoming year. I would be more than happy if my proposals can be of help to you!
    Yours Lihua
