W: Good morning, sir! Did you make a reservation?
    M: Yes, I've booked Room 202.
    (Text 2)
M: Hi, Lisa. Where are you going?
W: I'm driving north to the airport to meet a customer.
M: Good. That's also where I am heading. Can you give me a lift and leave me off at the shopping mall?
    (Text 3)
W: Thanks for lunch. It was delicious.
M: I'm glad you enjoyed it.
W: Next time it's on me.
    (Text 4)
M: Sylvia, you look pale. What happened?
W: I broke up with Paul last night, and was all over the bed for the whole night.
    (Text 5)
W: Let's take a coffee break, shall we? You've been sitting there for hours.
M: I wish I could, but I can't. I'm up to my neck in work. I've got to finish this report.
    (Text 6)
W: You've been in such a bad mood all day and you've done nothing but criticize me. I can't do anything right.
    M: No, I haven't. It's not true.
W: Oh yes it is. And I know what the problem is , because John's wife told me all about it on the phone this morning.
M: What do you mean by problem?
W: Well, I know that you crashed the new company car you got yesterday the very first time that you drove it.
M: Well, so what? Anyway it wasn't my fault.
W: Well, it certainly wasn't my fault so don't take it out on me.
M: Sorry, honey, you know I'm not doing this on purpose.
    (Text 7)
M: Tracy, what's your plan for this Saturday?
W: I am thinking about going shopping with some of my classmates. It should be a lot of fun. What about you?
M: Well, I'll go to see a new movie called The Warlords. I've heard it's wonderful.
W: That sounds good. Jet Li is my favorite. His Chinese kongfu is very good. And Jin Chengwu is in it, too. I think he's the most handsome actor in China.
M: I like him, too. And Andy Liu, my favorite movie star, plays the main character in the movie.
W: Well, I'll go with you instead of going shopping. Where and when do we meet tomorrow?
M: What about ten o'clock in the morning at the bus stop over there?
W: OK. Oh, that's the bell. Let's go.
    (Text 8)
M: Where are you going, Catherine? Today is Saturday.
W: Saturday isn't a holiday for me anymore. I tutor for three hours every Saturday afternoon.
M: That's great. I wish I could find a parttime job and get a little pocket money. How did you find this job?
W: I saw a “Tutor Wanted” notice near the bus stop. I phoned and got the job. It's not too hard to find a parttime job these days.
M: But Catherine, studying should always come first. Do you think that you have enough time left over? If I had a job, I'd have to try very hard to make good use of my time.
W: It's hard to say. We do spend a lot of time hanging around and doing nothing, don't we?
M: Your English is perfect. Why don't you find a job teaching English?
W: Because I don't have any teaching experience. Speaking and teaching are two different things.
    (Text 9)
M: Lost and Found. Can I help you?
W: Yes, I'm wondering if you have a suitcase of mine. I left it at the Emperor Hotel when I flew to London this morning.
M: Have you got any idea where you left it? Was it in your room, madam?
W: Probably in the dining room, actually. I think I put it under the table while I was having dinner.
M: Could you describe it for me?
W: Well, it's yellow, made in Germany, and has a lock shaped like a butterfly. Oh, and I almost forgot, there's also a white chain attached to the handle.
M: Just a minute. Yes, we have it here.
W: That's great. Could you send it to my office as soon as possible?
M: No problem. There will be a charge, though. Could I have your name and address, please?
W: Lynn Brown, 89 East Church Road.
M: Thank you. I'll send it as soon as possible.
    (Text 10)
My name is Julie and I'm a school nurse. My job involves working in schools to make sure that children are healthy and happy and able to learn.
I work with parents, teachers, family doctors, healthcare and many others to offer advice and support to families on things like healthy eating difficulties with sleep and behavior.
I enjoy my job because I love being with children. They don't feel sorry for themselves for long when they're not well. They're honest about how they feel and fun to be with. When children are ill, or when they're sad because something's wrong at home, it makes me sad, too. But there's usually something I can do to help. If I can't help, I know lots of people who can.

On a Sunday morning, I was driving down a road and saw something I couldn't believe. A little girl, less than two, was pushing her stroller (婴儿车) across the road. It was Sunday morning and traffic was not heavy.
I stopped my car at once and ran toward her. This little girl knew enough to run from a stranger. I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road.
Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying “bad girl” to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed (抓住) the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word.
I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. “Do you feel cold, Mom?” asked my son. I just shook my head.
After this happened, I thought about how thankful I am. Even though the father didn't say thank you, I feel that I did something good. Doing something for someone else is pleasing, even when it's only a matter of being in the fight place at the right time.
I didn't really “save” her, but I feel like it was important that I happened to be there. It is sad that I was the only one who stopped. It really made me a little disappointed that no one else stopped to help.

Pets are popular. They're good listeners, they encourage us to exercise, and they're always on our side when we argue with others. They can bring people comfort and pleasure.
But it is important to keep in mind that pets can carry diseases that can make you sick. Washing your hands often — especially after you touch, feed, or clean up a pet — is the best way to keep yourself healthy and prevent the spread of disease. Be sure to clean your fingernails carefully every time you wash.
You also can protect your health by wearing gloves while cleaning animal cages or cat litter boxes. Avoid washing your pet in the bathtub (浴缸), but if you do, always disinfect (消毒) the tub immediately afterward.
Be sure to bring your pet to the hospital for examinations every two weeks or month and whenever your pet is sick or injured.
You can do a few other things to keep yourself and your pet healthy. Only give your pet food that has been planned ahead for them. It's not a good idea to share your food with your pet. Human food (like chocolate) can make animals sick. Never feed your pet raw (生的) meat because it can carry germs (细菌) that cause serious illness.
And funny as it can be to see your dog or cat drinking from the toilet, don't let pets do this. It's bad for your pet's health! Give them clean, fresh water to drink at all times.
Never give milk to cats. The only milk an animal should drink is from its mother. Cow's milk is not for pets, especially for cats, as it makes them sick.
Finally, some animals aren't pets. Don't take in a wild or abandoned (被抛弃的) animal as a pet because it may have diseases that could make you or your family sick. Instead, turn to an animal rescue group that is trained in helping sick or abandoned animals.

Are you scared about moving up to senior high school? It can be a new experience, but you shouldn't worry. We've put together a guide on how to survive the first week.
    You're not alone
Remember everybody_else_in_your_year_is_in_the_same_boat. They may not realize it, but they're just as nervous as you are. Moving to senior high is an opportunity, not a problem.Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.
    Teachers are ready to help!
If you're unsure what to do or are worried about anything then you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they're experienced in helping new students. Some senior high schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.
    All change
There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You'll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
    Other points
If you've got an older brother or sister at the school then ask them for advice.
Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.
Having early nights makes a difference and you'll find it easier to get up in the morning!

A new book called “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua has caused a debate (争论) about cultural differences in parenting.Amy Chua is a teacher in an American university and both of her parents are Chinese. In the book, Ms. Chua writes about how she taught her daughters. She told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters were not allowed to do, such as having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A.
Many people are against Amy Chua's parenting style (风格), even her husband, who is American. They say it is rude and unfair to children. But she says her parents raised her and her three sisters in that way.
Ms. Chua says after her younger daughter shouted “I hate my life! I hate you!” she decided to retreat because she was afraid of losing her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children's abilities.
“The debate is about what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child,” said Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books on parenting. She says Amy Chua's parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. It is a traditional way of parenting among immigrants (移民). They hope to get a better future for their children.
She also sees a risk (风险). When children have no time to be social or to develop their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.

When Li Hua found out my situation, he often encouraged me and offered to practice English with me. With his help, I became interested in English. Since then, we have been good friends.
