Ammie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred (留下创伤) her for life. The child reached up to get a hot bottle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her body.

Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie badly burnt, rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, doctors performed an operation that took about six hours to control her injuries. Over the next 16 years, Ammie received 12 more operations to repair her body.

When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age 4, other pupils said cruel words or simply wouldn’t play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she said, “some children refused to become friends because of that.”

Today, aged 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further operations. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers hope to other young burns victims (受害者).

She is a member of the Scottish Burned Children’s Club. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridge for the first summer camp. “I’ll show them how to get rid of unkind looking from others,” she says. Ammie loves wearing fashionable(时尚的) clothes, and she plans to show the youngsters at the summer camp that they can too. “I do not hide my burns scars,” she says, “I gave up wondering how other people would say years ago.”

    29. What did other children do when Ammie first went to school?

    A. They were afraid of her.

    B. They showed pity to her.

    D. Ways to Get Rid of Unkind Looking

People are interested in eating raw and whole foods (天然健康食品). They are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and processed foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes () that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients (营养) to be absorbed into the blood. In both cases, the result is obesity.

Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the stomach that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestion cycle. Then, the body’s metabolism (新陈代谢) becomes inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity.

To stop this vicious circle in its tracks, people need to have healthy food that will balance the body. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can help. It’s also important to restore our enzyme balance. We need to tell and avoid the foods that cause negative effects and eat the foods that increase enzyme production. If we truly want to change and help our body heal itself, we need to take an active approach.

    33. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

      A. It is essential for us to digest some fat.

      B. Cooked and processed foods are healthier.

      C. Foods with natural enzymes help us keep fit.

      D. Absorbing many nutrients is beneficial to our health.

    34. Processed foods will probably __________.

      A. stop body’s metabolism    B. be difficult to digest

      C. destroy body’s cells    D. lead to obesity

    35. What does the underlined word “vicious” in the last paragraph mean?

      A. Harmful.  B. Violent. C. Automatic.  D. Positive.
