Last night , I tossed in bed, unable to sleep . It was a transitional time in Daniel’s , a  passage ,a step from college into the adult world.I wanted to leave him some words that would have some meaning,some significance beyond the moment.I failed. Nothing came to my mind. Maybe, I thought, it wasn’t necessary to say anything.

But I  knew that it was necessary . My father and I loved each other. Yet, I always regretted never hearing him put his feelings into words and never having the memory of that moment.

Now, as I stood before Daniel, I still nothing came from my lips. No sound broke the stillness of my beach-side home.Outside, I could hear the  shrill cries of sea gulls as they circled the ever-changing surf of Long Island. Inside, I stood frozen and quiet,looking into the searching eyes of my  son.

What made it more difficult was that I knew this was not the first time I had let such a moment pass. My mind quickly raced back to a summer vacation 8 years ago, when Daniel would tread on the forest with his three buddies for the first time. Bags packed and tools ready, Daniel waited quietly for my final reminder. I just stared at him and quietly murmured. “Take care, son.” Another time, Daniel was to give a graduation speech in front of 1,500 students. Before hopping the stage, he inquired, “Mom, do you have any word for me?” “No, son, just believe in yourself.” I escaped his searching eyes and retreated into my seat.

Thinking of those lost opportunities, now I could feel my palms sweat and my throat tighten. Finally, I mustered up my courage and blurted out, “son, I am so proud of you to make this decision and experience a brand-new culture. I assure you this will be the most valuable asset in your life. I take pride in you because you possess the courage which I failed to have in pursuing your dream. Please take care and my love is always by your side.” As a lump formed in my throat, I could no longer continue. My son was also touched beyond words as tears brimmed over in his eyes. Finally out came his mother’s reminder and words he had been waiting for in the last 20 years.

And they asked the couple if they were really happy. The couple answered. “Yes, we are very happy. But we have too many children. A mother with a large family of children never has a peaceful day.      Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor through the smoke.

     They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

     Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas (睡衣;宽长裤) — running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

     "She might have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik’s still inside." She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.

       Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help. A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Jane’s mind. She told them Ms. Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs and then rushed to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighborhood felt relieved and Jane and Tom’s joy was immense. Never give up your brave heart to help people in need, no matter how dangerous the situation is .

To understand the reason for the researchers'cautious optimism，we must first understand the factors that are threatening the polar bear's existence．Polar bears consume a diet of mainly young seals．In order to hunt these seals，polar bears need to rest at the top of sea ice---the same ice that is increasingly melting for most of the year thanks to climate change．In another 50years，experts expect that the Arctic will be too warm for sea ice to form for half of the year，leaving polar bears without a reliable food source and in serious danger of starvation．

As it turns out alternative food sources for the polar bears aren't completely out of the question．For as long as biologists have tailed after the animals they've seen polar bears eating animals found on land like caribou（驯鹿） and snow geese---as well as the snow geese's eggs． Can polar bears actually survive off these alternative food sources for long periods of time？To figure this out，researchers calculated the nutrients that a caribou and snow geese diet would provide．They found that even adult male polar bears would be able to obtain more calories than they would burn in hunting these meals．Moreover，the food would provide the food necessary to avoid starvation during the summer months．

Unfortunately，not all polar bears have tended to seek food on land．That said，the researchers expect that necessity would push more polar bears to hunt on land to avoid starvation．They also expect that the bears could learn from their fellow bears how to hunt on land until the practice becomes second nature．
