Prior to its restoration (修复) from 1990 to 2001, the tower had a tilt (倾斜) of 5.5 degrees. Many people think that it will fall one day. Millions of tourists come to the lawns around the tower to take the classic photo pretending to hold up or knock down the tower.
It is said that you must visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa during the day. At night the shops are closed and it appears unimpressive. But, if you plan to visit on a full moon night, the tower will look charming. Mornings are the best time to beat the crowds. Summer in Pisa is very hot and wet, but you can expect rain in fall and winter.

The tower has also been used for experiments by the famous Italian scientist named Galileo Galilei. Now many young people are travelling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first travelled alone when she was at college and believed that it was something everyone should do at least once in their life. She said, “It opens your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go travelling. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He said he wished he had travelled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the man.
Chris describes travelling alone will make you a more confident person who is ready to deal with anything. He said, “The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”
As the saying goes, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”
5. Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?
A. Travelling abroad helps people to find new things.
B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.
C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.
D. Travelling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.
6. Travelling alone is challenging because ________.
A. you have to choose things on your own
B. it is hard for you to prove yourself to others
C. you can only depend on yourself whatever happens
D. it pushes you into the comfort zone
7. What can we know about Chris?
A. He started travelling alone at an early age.
B. He once was afraid of travelling.
C. He used to work as a salesman.
D. His website inspires others a lot.
8. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Travel Abroad B. Travel Alone C. Travel Light D. Travel Far
【答案】5-8 DCCB

根据第三段第一句话“In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging.”
根据第四段第一句话“Chris decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go travelling.”

Walking the Great Wall of China can be as ambitious as tackling the entire 1,800 miles from the Gobi Desert to the Yellow Sea or spending a morning or afternoon climbing a section with a tour group. 9. Read about the history of the Great Wall’s construction so you can appreciate those many uneven steps.
Book a half-day tour right from your Beijing hotel. Bring a bottle of water and a light bag, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen and, of course, your camera. Obtain necessary government permits for a more ambitious independent hike. 10. Pack your equipment for a walk along all or a large section of the Great Wall and then try to reduce its weight. 11. Get good maps and study recent trip diaries and guides. Break in your climbing shoes and don’t forget to put lots of bandages and sun cream in the first-aid kit.
Decide whether you will begin in the Gobi Desert or at the Yellow Sea. Desert travel is tiring and slow-going. 12. Create a plan and file it with a friend you will contact at regular intervals. This is an essential safety step for an isolated, dangerous trip.
13. The trip is as much about absorbing cultures as walking the Great Wall. Villagers may offer you meals and lodging. In remote areas this can be a time saver. Travel with a friend if possible; learn some basic Chinese before you go and engage pleasantly but carefully with local people in the less-developed regions.
A. Accept local kindness but exercise caution.
B. You can also bring nothing with you.
C. Consult a good camping supply store for the lightest equipment.
D. The heat is fierce so plan walks for early morning and late afternoon.
E. You will connect with Chinese history and culture and test your own limits.
F. Both approaches demand some physical fitness, the right shoes and preparation.
G. Start that process months in advance of travel to ensure your trip won’t be delayed.
9. 由“Walking the Great Wall of China can be as ambitious as tackling the entire 1,800 miles from the Gobi Desert to the Yellow Sea or spending a morning or afternoon climbing a section with a tour group.”
10. 由“Obtain necessary government permits for a more ambitious independent hike”可知,获得必要的政府许可,以便进行更艰巨的独立徒步旅行。

12. 由“Desert travel is tiring and slow-going.”
13. 由下文中的“Villagers may offer you meals and lodging”和“learn some basic Chinese before you go and engage pleasantly but carefully with local people in the less-developed regions. ”可知,村民们会为你提供食宿。在去之前学习一些基本的中文,与较偏僻地区的人们愉快交往,但仍应心存警惕。所以本段的主旨是接受当地人的善意,但要谨慎行事。也就是本段第一句所要说明的内容。故A选项“接受当地人的善意,但要谨慎行事”符合句意。故A选项切题。
