 Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. In time Al became an alcoholic.  As the alcoholism progressed, AL began to lose everything he possessed---his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al’s death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure! ”As time went by , I began to re-value my earlier rough judgement . I knew Al’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring , most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere . I hadn’t heard Ernie talked much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, “love you, son.” ” Tears came to my eyes as I realized what I had been a fool to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.

After the surgery, Sun suffered intense pain, but insisted that he didn‟t need any medication. One evening,
he found Law, his wife, crying on the balcony of their apartment in a rare outburst of frustration. “If you

not to get angry and sad about it; it‟s been frustrating that every pathology（病理）test after my surgery
came back with the worst possible result; and it‟s been hard to accept that modern medicine isn‟t able to fix
me.” At the same time, he wrote, “Every day I wake up not-dead is a gift.”
Sun and Law had other lists, detailing the things that they hoped to accomplish in life, which included a
trip to Wimbledon; climbing Mt. Snowdon in Wales; and a range of musical aspirations（愿望）----from
learning the Bach sonatas（奏鸣曲）and partitas（变奏曲）to performing the first violin part in a concert.
Sun started working on Bach‟s six sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin,
the most difficult parts, which George Enescu, a world-famous violinist, once described as the Himalayas
for violinists. Sun practiced every day, even if he could manage only fifteen minutes between medical
treatments. As he mastered each piece, he posted his performances on Facebook. He finished on November

Mum always awoke early. When she was working as an actress she thought: Sooner or later they will realize their mistake and will send me home. To get rid of that fear, she would get up before “they” did,to go over her lines. In order to look perfect on the set, fresh,without a single negative thought that might ruffle her smile, she had to arise between four and five in the morning and gather her strength.
Mum, like any wise family doctor, believed in the virtues of a good breakfast. She never skipped it. She knew how to be persuasive and from the time I was a little boy she would cut slices of buttered bread-she called them “fingers”-for dipping in soft-boiled eggs. However, what left an impression about her breakfast went beyond those toasted rectangles of bread.

Reduce the time spent checking your phone

A few more kids raised their hands, and then the officer explained, “This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of watcher is to keep the fire going gently. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes the next person.”
Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe?”
The officer looked at him. “Well, nothing is absolutely safe. Crossing the road isn’t absolutely safe. But the danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer?”
Alan nodded but felt uneasy. Sleeping in a tent with other campers had sounded OK, but the idea of being alone in the night made him tremble.
Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping(俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Was the owl hunting for the creature that had made them?
