It is commonly believed that the earliest Chinese paper-cuts appeared during the sixth century. Some scholars believe it was even earlier. Legend has it that during the Western Han Dynasty( 206BC-AD24), Emperor Wudi was very sad after one of his favorite concubines, Madame Li, died. A Taoist priest, Li Shaoweng, cut a piece of hemp paper in the shape of Madame Li. When evening fell, the emperor’s servants lit candles in his bedroom; the reflection of that paper-cut on the wall made the emperor think about his beloved concubine.
The Yuxian paper-cut is different from most paper-cuts produced in other regions of China. Paper-cuts from other regions are mostly cut with scissors or knives from single-colored paper, such as red or black paper.
There are four major procedures to making the Yuxian paper-cut: First, sketch the pattern on the draft paper; second, fasten the draft to the paper to be cut; third, use a knife to carve out the pattern; and fourth, dye (染色) the paper-cut with various colors.
Precise cutting skills are needed to make a piece of the Yuxian paper-cut, which highlights the craft maker’s artistic taste and dyeing skills. That explains the following saying: “The successful making of a Yuxian paper-cut is 30 percent dependent on the maker's cutting skills, and 70 percent on the maker’s dyeing skills.”
The traditional Yuxian paper-cut highlights two themes: flowers and characters in Chinese operas. The paper-cut is particularly known for its vivid description of characters in various traditional Chinese operas. In October 2009, the art of Yuxian’s paper-cut was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (非物质文化遗产) established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization).

It was the last time Susan Butcher ran the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1992. An hour into the race, Susan and her sled dog team sped down a hill and crashed into a fallen tree. Although hurt, Susan continued the difficult race.
The Iditarod Race started in 1925 when a doctor in Nome, Alaska was desperately in need of medicine to stop the spread of a deadly disease. Only a hospital had what he needed, but it was 700 mile-away! In January, it was too dangerous to send a boat and too stormy for his tiny airplane. The only hope was to use several sled dog teams following a trail, called the Iditarod Trail. They passed the medicine from one sled team to another. Wind and snow did not stop the men and their dogs. The medicine was delivered in record time. The race follows the route of the famous medicine run. Over 1,000 miles long, it is considered the toughest race in the world.
Susan Butcher was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In her teens Susan was given a Siberian husky dog and became very interested in huskies as sled dogs. After reading about the Iditarod Race, Susan moved to Alaska. She got several jobs to earn money to buy herself a sled and a team of huskies. After years of hard work and training, Susan achieved her dream of racing on the Iditarod Trail.
In 1978, at the age of 24, Susan entered the race for the first time and became the first woman to finish in the top 20. In 1982 she came in second. In 1984 she was leading her team across a frozen waterway when they fell into the water. Her lead dog managed to pull Susan and the other dogs out of danger. Remarkably, she came in second.
In her fourth race, in 1985,a starving moose(驼鹿) attacked her dogs, killing two and injuring eleven. Susan had to leave the race. In 1986 Susan joined the race again. This time, she won. She won again in 1987. In 1988 she became the first person ever to win three Iditarod races in a row. Unbelievably, Susan won for the fourth time in 1990.

Try this: For an entire day, forget about the clock. Eat when you’re hungry and sleep when you’re tired. What do you think will happen?
You may be surprised to find that your day is much like most other days. You’ll probably get hungry when you normally eat and tired when you normally sleep. Even though you don’t know what time it is, your body does. These patterns of daily life are called circadian rhythms(生理节奏), and they are more than just habits. Inside our bodies are several clocklike systems that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle. Throughout the day and night, our inner clocks direct changes in temperature, body chemicals, hunger, sleepiness and more.
Everyone’s rhythms are different, which is why you might like to stay up late while your sister always wants to go to bed early. But on the whole, everyone is programmed to feel tired at night and energetic during the day. Learning about our body clocks may help scientists understand why problems arise when we act out of step with our circadian rhythms. For example, traveling across time zones can make people wake up in the middle of the night. Regularly staying up late can make kids do worse in tests.
“There is a growing sense that when we eat and when we sleep are important parts of how healthy we are,” says Steven Shea, director of the Sleep Disorders Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
One way to learn about how our body clocks tick is to mess them up and see what happens. That’s what neurologist(神经病学家)Frank Scheer and his workmates did in a recent study. Staying up night after night, their studies suggest, could make kids extra hungry and more likely to gain weight. And regularly sleeping too little, Scheer says, may be one cause of the recent increase in childhood obesity.
32. What will happen if you forget about the clock according to the passage?
A. You will feel upset.
B. You will behave normally.
C. Your body will not know what time it is.
D. You will probably get hungry more easily.
33. Mike feels energetic at 12 midnight while Tom feels sleepy. What advice would be given by the writer?
A. Both should see a doctor. B. Tom should see a doctor.
C. Both should take it easy. D. Mike should have a watch.
34. How do Frank Scheer and his workmates study body clocks?
A. By seeing what happens when they are messed up.
B. By asking questions and collecting answers.
C. By studying people traveling across time zones.
D. By programming people with man-made clocks.
35. What will the writer most probably talk about next?
A. Other examples of what people will do when their body clocks go wrong.
B. Some effective medicines that can keep people from putting on weight.
C.The importance of eating healthy food.
D. What circadian rhythms are and how they work.

※Ask for advice.
Asking someone for advice is a great way to get people to like you. It shows that you respect the other individual's opinion. 39 When you make someone feel better about himself or herself, that person will most certainly end up liking you for it.

书面表达(25分):
Dear Peter,
I am glad that you are interested in Chinese idioms. Chinese idioms, mainly consisting of four Chinese characters, have been appealing to those absorbed in the Chinese language because they are an important part of Chinese culture. The benefits of learning them can be listed as follows.
First, with more and more Chinese idioms widely used in our daily life, having a good knowledge of them contributes to better understanding both spoken Chinese and written Chinese. Second, they usually possess vivid and profound meanings, making what you try to convey more convincing.
As far as I’m concerned, I have a preference for the interesting stories behind some of the Chinese idioms. Not only are they interesting, but also they tend to teach some wisdom, which helps me a lot.
I sincerely hope you can learn them well.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

As we all know, culture is similar with an iceberg (冰山). There are cultural roles where are obvious and easily to understand. Most of our cultural values, however, is not clear or hidden. For example, when you will visit a restaurant in Japan, people may sit on the floor and use chopstick to eat. These eat habits are easy to come across. You may not know, therefore, that it’s common for a man to sit cross-legged on the floor, but it’s not considered acceptable for woman to do so. You have to study people’s body language to understanding this less obvious cultural rule.

书面表达(25分):
Dear Peter,
I am glad that you are interested in Chinese idioms.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
