It was the dcumentary The Wrld Befre Yur Feet that inspired us.Watching a man walk every street in New Yrk made my friend Martha and me want t d the same thing in the heart f ur wn hmetwn.Besides,Kingstn is cnsidered the mst walkable city in Ontari,Canada.S,armed with nthing but a massive bk f street maps,we set ut t walk a minimum f 10 kilmeters every Saturday until we'd cvered every paved bend and dead-end street.
Our 542.4-kilmeter jurney began n Sept 1,2021.As keen walkers,we weren't wrried abut the distance.
We lved the idea f discvering parts f the city we had never seen.Every yard ffered a quick lk int the persnality f thse wh wned it.Sme yards verflwed with apple trees bending under the weight f fruit.Others were cvered with bits f painted wd and brken metal. But mre than the scenery and steps taken, the biggest discvery was the questins, the sharp bservatins and the thughtful cnversatins shared between us.
Hidden parts were uncvered as we walked and talked.I admitted my fndness fr rmance nvels and blw-up Santas.Martha revealed her strng interest in tiny free libraries. "Hw are we even friends?" she jked ne day.Maybe it's because,fr bth f us,walking helps us stay balanced. There is a calming jy in hitting the pavement;alng with an ease f cnversatin that cmes withut the face-t-face pressure that can prevent clseness. With every ftstep,we became better listeners and ur friendship grew.
Of curse,as winter set in,there were sme days we lnged t stay under the cvers, but what had started as a lighthearted prject had grwn int smething precius,a meet-up vital t ur mental and physical well-being.And ur deep cnversatins remained private. What happened n the pavement stayed n the pavement.
Three years and six pairs f shes later,we had walked the 542.4 kilmeters.Frever changed by what started as a "what if" prject and nw full f cnfidence,we are already planning ur next big walking adventure.
As lng as we are able,we'll keep pulling urselves ut f bed t put ne ft in frnt f the ther.In ding s,we'll keep discvering nt just urselves, but each ther as well.
