Stone House, Portugal The Stone House in Portugal is really similar to the famous home of the Flintstones (a film). It is built between two rocks and its architecture has impressed some of the greatest architects. The house was attacked by some bad people. The house is pretty comfortable inside, with a fireplace and everything necessary, so it is a wonderful example of modern architecture in Stone Age style! Dancing Building, Czech Republic The Dancing House, or “Fred and Ginger”, is situated in Prague, the Czech Republic. It is an amazing masterpiece of architecture which has its own romantic charm. There is something so sweet in the way the buildings hug each other for a dance! It has become symbol of city! Crooked House, Poland The Crooked House in Poland has an extraordinary and amazing structure. It was built in 2003 with its design on the basis of some famous pictures of Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg. It looks as if it has been taken from a cartoon: Its design is “crooked”, but it is balanced, so it is not ugly at all, just strange! The interesting part is how builders managed to create this genius idea, but the house is a fact and everyone admires their creativity! Habitat 67, Montreal, Canada Habitat 67 in Canada is a very interesting arrangement of cubes, which looks like the building blocks that children play with. It is pretty interesting how it was designed — it looks so original, and at the same time the building is completely stable and comfortable for living! It was created as a main attraction for the World Expo 1967, where it was officially exposed! 31. Which building has a Stone Age style A.Dancing Building. B.Stone House. C.Crooked House. B What does it take to bring nature back into the city For Shanghai high school senior Xiao Tai, the answer lies in a 115-square-meter eco-garden within a residential community in Hongkou District. Over the past eight months, the 17-year-old created a habitat with urban wildlife. Xiao’s passion for nature began when he was a child. He immersed himself in ecological conservation through online videos, scientific databases, and hands-on activities. However, it was an encounter with a community clean-up project two years ago that shifted his focus to urban wildlife “I noticed how even a small green space can support biodiversity,” he recalled. This inspired him to create a refuge (避难所) for local species. The eco-garden has two sections. The first, a 15-square-meter plot near an internal road, was transformed from an existing greenbelt. Last summer, Xiao obtained permission from the neighborhood committee to experiment there. He planted native nectar plants (蜜源植物) and built a Benjes hedge — a pile of branches that provides shelter for small animals and attracts insects. Because of the success of this first project, the committee allocated another 100-square-meter area for further development. This area was divided into three ecological zones. One section features artificial water containers for birds and frogs. Another area has a pond to support native species, with monitoring cameras. The third zone is used to restore native plants. In early March, a hedgehog (刺猬) was captured on camera exploring the Benjes hedge. “It can rest safely here without fear of predators (捕食性动物),” shared Xiao. Xiao also put up educational signs and warnings against improper behaviors like picking plants. Every weekend afternoon, he gives guided tours, mainly for local children. Xiao hopes to involve more people in maintaining the garden in the future. “Right now, it’s just me, but others will take over as I get busier as a Senior 3 student,” he said. As he prepares for college, he plans to study ecology and continue his conservation efforts. 36. What inspired Xiao Tai to create a refuge for local species A.His love for nature started in his childhood. B.A community clean-up project two years ago. C.His interest in urban wildlife from online videos. D.The success of the first eco-garden project. 37. How did Xiao Tai get the permission to experiment in the first plot of the eco-garden A.He applied for it through an online platform. B.He got it from the local government easily. C.He didn’t need permission as it was his own land. D.He asked the neighborhood committee for it last summer. 38. What is one of the features of the second area of the eco-garden A.It has a pond to support native species with cameras. B.It is mainly used for growing non-native plants. C.It is a place for children to play on weekends. D.It is a large open space for birds to fly freely. 39. What can we infer about Xiao Tai’s future plans A.He will give up the eco-garden as he gets busier. B.He will study something unrelated to ecology in college. C.He will stop his conservation efforts after entering college. D.He hopes more people will be involved in garden maintenance. 40. What is the main idea of the passage A.The importance of urban wildlife conservation. B.The different sections of an eco-garden in Shanghai. C.How a high school student created an eco-garden in the city. D.The role of neighborhood committees in environmental projects. C There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health, wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds. People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into n habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize it had effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit. Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position, or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start, step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels. 41. People who are unhappy ____________ . A.always consider things differently from others B.usually are affected by the results of certain things C.usually misunderstand what others think or say D.always discover the unpleasant side of certain things 42. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means “________“. A.have a good taste with social life B.make others unhappy C.tend to scold others openly D.enjoy the pleasure of life 43. We can conclude from the passage that ________. A.we should pity all such unhappy people B.such unhappy people are dangerous to social life C.people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness D.unhappy people cannot understand happy persons 44. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should __________ . A.prevent any communication with them B.show no respect and politeness to them C.persuade them to recognize the bad effects D.quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes 45. In this passage, the writer mainly ___________ . A.describes two types of people in our 1ife who have negative effect on others B.give some examples to laugh at the unhappy people in our society C.suggests the unhappy people should get rid of the habits of unhappiness D.tells people get away from unhappy people and how to be happy in life 四、阅读表达 Just like everyone, I have experienced ups and downs in my life. I am an aerospace engineer from India, I was told by my relatives, close friends and others that it was hard for a non-IT student to pursue a master’s degree in IT and graduate from a US university. I had never taken courses related to computers or programming. I was never interested in being a programmer, but things changed. I became so fascinated with the convenience IT has brought to our life that I made up my mind in chasing a master’s degree in IT. At first, I came across too many difficulties and ing from a middle-class family, the huge cost per credit was a big issue. My English accent was terrible. Most importantly, the courses seemed impossible at first. Although I felt so discouraged and frustrated, I never thought of giving up. Then I decided to choose my university because it promised its students to help them learn practically. During my first month, it was difficult to understand the Americans’ accent and finish my assignments. But I never gave in. I walked two miles to the university every day so that I could use my travel money to buy a meal. I started looking for jobs and I got an offer to work as a student assistant, which meant lifting benches and chairs every day. I took all these challenges as my chances, and I believed that hard work was my strength. Right now I am graduating with a GPA of 3.96/4 and a job offer from a multinational company that has asked me to start right after graduation. When you have a dream to realize, there is nothing that can stop you. All you need is the diligence and persistence. Hard work always pays off. Having a determined will is also necessary. 46. Last year, I faced a vital choice between giving up my weak physics or sticking to it. At that time, my physics grades kept falling, and I wanted to drop it to spend more time on my favorite subjects. But my teacher told me escaping difficulty would never make progress. After thinking for days, I chose to keep learning physics. I made daily exercise plans and asked teachers for help regularly. Gradually, my scores improved greatly in the final exam. This choice taught me a valuable lesson: running away from troubles solves nothing. True growth comes from bravely facing challenges. Every choice carries power, and we should learn from its results to become better versions of ourselves.
