Eventually, after s many hurs had gne by,the villagers knew they had t d smething. They began t prceed with care, just in case the elephant became panicked. Then,as they gt clser, they understd what was happening.Inside f the hle that she had dug was her baby calf, which had fallen in and culdn't get ut.

Scientists in the US have upladed a fruit fly t a cmputer simulatin (模拟) .Des it sund like the pening f a sci-fi film?Actually,in San Francisc, bitechnlgy cmpany En Systems scientists have recently dne this exact experiment. They upladed a cpy f the brain f a living fly int a simulatin, and created a virtual insect that knew hw t walk, fly, grm and feed in its virtual envirnment.
The big scientific news is that the team has essentially recreated the creature's behaviural wiring. The digital insect already knew hw t behave like a fly, withut any training r prmpting. This challenges a central assumptin f mdern AI:that intelligence must be acquired. In the case f the fly, much f its behaviur appears t be built-in.
"The brain was scanned using electrn micrscpy. Our head f engineering led a prject t emulate (复刻) that brain, and nw we've placed the emulated brain back int a bdy,s it can wander arund a virtual wrld," Michael Andregg,CEO f En Systems said.
A fruit fly's brain cmprises arund 140,000 neurns. The virtual fly has 87 jints and can d pretty much anything an actual fly can.But des it realise it's living in a simulatin?
"The fly prbably knws smething's ff,because we're nt simulating the envirnment with high fidelity (保真度), " says Andregg. "We can't give very specific taste and smell clues — just that smething smells sweet r tastes bitter. But there are n cmplex smells."
Brain emulatin,Andregg suggests, culd eventually allw humans "t grw in a wrld with superintelligence. Our gal is t make the emulatin and cmputed brain and bdy feel indistinguishable frm the natural bichemical bdy and brain," he cntinues. "If it feels different,we've dne smething wrng."
But we're still a lng way frm the uplad-yurself-int-the-internet futures imagined in sci-fi films, mainly because,in this case, the fly's brain had t be remved frm the bdy first. "Scanning the bdy was t hard," says Andregg, which will prbably reduce the waiting list fr human vlunteers willing t try ut the technlgy.
Meanwhile,Chng,a bilgical cmputing scientist, believes bilgical cmputing culd achieve things that traditinal cmputing has struggled with. "There's a thing called Mravec's paradx (悖论), which is well knwn in rbtics:what humans find very difficult, cmputers find easy, and what cmputers find difficult, humans find easy," he says.
"Abstract reasning, mathematics and language are relatively recent in evlutinary (进化的) terms, which is partly why cmputers excel at them. But mtr cntrl and prbabilistic decisin-making are things we've inherited thrugh millins f years f evlutin.Rbts may be very gd at slving maths prblems, but we're still trying t build rbts that can walk prperly." Bilgical systems like the fruit fly simulatin,he says, might eventually pwer rbts, drnes and ther machines that need t handle the messy unpredictability f the real wrld.
Fr nw,smewhere in Silicn Valley,a fruit fly is living its secnd life inside a cmputer, ttally unaware that it is living in a virtual wrld.
9.The authr uses "a sci-fi film" in Paragraph 1 mainly t ______ .
A. indicate the experiment may be based n a sci-fi film.
B. present the experiment as surprisingly futuristic.
C. suggest the experiment may affect future life.
D. prve the experiment t be highly unreliable.
10.What can we learn frm the digital fly research?______
A. The digital fly is nt able t taste and smell.
B. The digital fly realises it is in a virtual wrld.
C. Sme intelligence f the digital fly may be inbrn.
D. The same technlgy will sn be tested n human vlunteers.
11.Regarding bilgical cmputing,Chng might agree that ______ .
A. it will allw rbts t d what they presently cannt.
B. it imprves human's decisin-making ability.
C. it speeds up the curse f human evlutin.
D. it will vertake traditinal cmputing .

Right nw,I'm glued t my phne.Like mst peple,I get my news frm varius apps — scial psts, pdcasts, newsletters — and when things are blwing up,I can't lk away. The strangest part, thugh,is that the mre I watch and read what ther peple are saying, the lnelier I feel.
This is hardly a new r unique experience.Scilgists have been talking abut it fr nearly 80 years. In 1950,David Riesman published a bk called The Lnely Crwd,in which he argued that the rise f cnsumerism and mass media had led t a new kind f persnality type that is deeply sensitive t lneliness. He called this persnality "ther-directed".Other-directed peple are cnstantly attuned t what everyne arund them is ding, using the preferences f their peer grups t decide what t buy, wear and think.Riesman warned that ther-directed peple are bsessed with cnfrming, anxius t be "part f a crwd".What they fear mre than anything is being alne.
There's a paradx in every ther-directed persn's heart. As much as they may want t cnfrm,t be part f the grup chat, they als want t feel like they are unique.Riesman explained that cnsumerism itself relieves this ther-directed anxiety by ffering "false persnalisatin".
This kind f false persnalisatin shws up all the time in the algrithms (算法) that shape ur experiences nline. Many apps have a "fr yu" feed full f vides that feel tailr-made fr ur specific tastes. And yet it is shaped by an algrithm that we dn't cntrl, whse purpse is largely t keep ur eyeballs glued t the same app that everyne else is glued t.It is "fr yu" in the service f cnfrmity.
As ther-directed peple,we are invited t express urselves mainly by participating in peer grups r by "jining the cnversatin".And yet we still feel lnely. That's because when we piece urselves tgether ut f what we think ther peple want,we hide frm smething crucial:ur wn truly persnal,messy,nn-cnfrmist desires.
Riesman suggested tw slutins t this ther-directed prblem.First,we need t take back ur leisure hurs frm the hyper-cnsumerist wrld f media. All that effrt we put int paying attentin t ur peers is t much like wrk,and we need mre free play!Secnd,we shuld test ut new identities and experiences.Figure ut what we enjy when nbdy is telling us what "fun" is suppsed t be.D smething we have never dne befre.Surprise urselves. And see hw it feels t
Yu wn't figure ut wh yu are frm a "fr yu" feed r a chatbt.S get ff yur phne,d smething unexpected and be yurself fr a while.
12.What des the wrd "attuned" underlined in Paragraph 2 mst prbably mean?______
A. Oppsed B. Sympathetic C. Attentive D. Critical
13.What can be inferred abut ther-directed peple frm the passage?______
A. They feel greatly terrified f being left ut.
B. They usually give up their individuality t cnfrm.
C. Their lneliness can be relieved by chatting with thers.
D. Their false persnalisatin pushes them t think fr themselves.
14.Accrding t David Riesman,we shuld ______ .
A. recgnise cnsumerism in the wrld f media
B. fcus n building a cnsistent self-identity
C. achieve a balance between wrk and play
D. explre t find ut what we truly enjy
15.Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?______

C. Face Our True Selves Bravely D. Hw Other-Directedness Wrks
