Fr decades, the stry f Rapa Nui — als knwn as Easter Island — has served as a pwerful warning. The ppular belief was that the island’s ancient sciety cllapsed (衰败) because its peple used up all their natural resurces. They cut dwn every tree, it was said, t transprt the famus stne statues called mai, and in ding s destryed their wn envirnment. This idea became a symbl f human flishness.
But new research is nw challenging this lng-held saying. Archaelgist (考古学家) Mike Pitts, authr f the cver stry in Natural Histry magazine, argues that the evidence tells a very different stry. Accrding t Pitts, when the first Eurpean explrers arrived in the 1720s, they described an island rich in gardens and grasslands. The peple were healthy, and their sciety was functining well. There was n sign f a civilizatin that had destryed itself thrugh pr management. “The traditinal stry f Rapa Nui is pwerful, but it may nt be true,” Pitts writes. “The evidence suggests that the peple f Rapa Nui managed their resurces wisely fr centuries.”
S what caused the sciety t fall? As Pitts put it, the prblems came nt frm inside, but frm utside. Cntact with Eurpeans brught new diseases, vilence, and the taking f peple as slaves. These external frces, nt bad decisins by the islanders themselves, were the main cause f the sciety’s cllapse.
Pitts’ wrk raises an imprtant questin: Hw ften d we accept dramatic stries withut questining the evidence? The traditinal stry f Rapa Nui was repeated fr s lng that it became accepted as fact. But science requires us t keep asking questins, t examine ld beliefs, and t be pen t new evidence — even when it challenges what we thught we knew. As the authr cncludes, “Smetimes the mst interesting discveries are nt abut finding smething new — they’re ld things viewed frm a different light.”

D.Their sciety stpped functining in the 1720s.
10.What’s Pitts’s attitude twards questining ld stries?
      A.Supprtive.B.Dubtful.
