Haili Smith, 16, says she and her sibling, Brooke, “have very different tastes in books.” Haili likes spine-tinglers. Brooke, 13, prefers fantasy. What they share is the belief that kids are more motivated to read if they relate to a book’s characters. That’s why, in 2020, they started Books Like Me. The nonprofit group supplies teachers with culturally diverse children’s books. So far, Haili and Brooke have given away more than 16,000 books. Most have been donated in Florida, where the siblings (姐弟) lived when they started Books Like Me. Many have gone to California, which is where they live now. As word about their organization has spread, requests have come in from schools nationwide. Teachers and librarians can request a donation from Books Like Me online. Educators say a book can be a mirror, letting kids see themselves in its characters. Or it can be a window, helping kids see from the perspective of characters with backgrounds and experiences different from their own. Over the years, Haili and Brooke have been invited to speak with educators about the importance of culturally diverse books. They’ve also taken books directly to students. At a book fair in Florida, “I was at a table showing kids the books and they were picking them out,”Haili recalls. “They all looked so happy when they found a book that struck a chord with them.” That, of course, is the goal. “I hope, and I think,” Haili says, “that all kids should see themselves represented in books so that they enjoy reading.” 4.What inspired the siblings to start the nonprofit group A.Their interests in books differed. The Celtic Sea is a body of water off the southern coast of Ireland. The area is known for its unusual sea life. Scientists want to know why sea creatures are so attracted to this part of the Atlantic Ocean. One of the research vehicles is powered by batteries (电池). It collects information for the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, England, and the World Wildlife Fund. The vehicle’s low energy requirements permit it to stay floating on water for up to 30 days. Reports of what it finds in the Celtic Sea are sent by satellite. Stephen Woodward is an engineer who helped design the vehicle. He says the vehicle has equipment that can discover small organisms called zooplankton (浮游动物) and fish. He adds that other sensing equipment measures water currents and other features of sea life. The vehicle also creates a map of the sea. Another vehicle is powered by the sun and the wind.It can stay floating on water for months. The robotic vehicle sends information about the so called biodiversity hotspots. A biodiversity hotspot is an area of an ocean that has a lot of plant and animal life activity. Lavinia Suberg is one of the scientists studying the Celtic Sea. She says productive ocean areas, like the Celtic Sea, attract zooplankton. The zooplankton then attracts fish. She adds that areas with a large increase of fish often attract sea mammals and birds. Using these robotic ocean vehicles greatly reduces the cost of exploring the sea with manned laboratories. Scientists can spend more time analyzing the collected information. They say the research will give them a better understanding of the needs of the Celtic Sea for future management and protection. 8.Why do the British scientists explore the Celtic Sea A.To study the geography of the sea. B.To learn why the sea is rich in sea life. C.To test their self directed water vehicles. D.To learn about the sea creatures in the sea. 9.According to the text, the water vehicles ________. A.are controlled directly by humans B.work depending on the map of the sea C.can send the information back directly D.can keep floating on water for a long time 10.According to Lavinia Suberg, the sea mammals and birds ________. A.are afraid of living alone B.mainly feed on zooplankton C.like to live in warm ocean areas D.are especially interested in fish 11.What is the last paragraph mainly about A.The aim of sea exploration. B.The cost of exploring the sea. C.The importance of the water vehicles. D.Ways to deal with the collected information. It’s not what you would consider to be a healthy drink. But research suggests drinking beer can actually lower your blood pressure and reduce your weight. Xanthohumol (黄腐酚), contained in beer, could reduce damage done by high-fat diets, scientists claim. Such diets lead to a series of conditions including obesity, high blood pressure and blood sugar. But trials on mice fed with high-fat foods showed that giving them beer could curb some of the conditions. Figures suggest a quarter of adults in the UK suffer from metabolic syndrome (代谢综合征), and around 35 percent of Americans are believed to have it. It puts you at greater risk of developing heart disease — the world’s leading killer — but it can be changed by making healthy lifestyle changes. Scientists at Oregon State University made the conclusion after testing xanthohumol (XN) on obese mice. The findings back up previous research that has suggested the compounds could be used in future to treat metabolic syndrome. And they offer fresh hope for fighting metabolic syndrome, because they cause no potential side effects unlike compounds under current tests. Xanthohumol is known to transform into 8-PN, and researchers have long been criticized for the side effects. Professor Fred Stevens, lead author, said, “If someone took XN over longer periods of time, it could lead to side effects, potentially.” But Professor Stevens said they came across the “solution to the problem” by adding water to XN — which stopped the creation of 8-PN. And various tests on mice, published in the journal Scientific Reports, showed the derivatives worked but caused no harm. High-fat diets also lead to memory loss — but the compounds allowed mice to keep their learning, the researchers found. 12.What does the research mentioned in the first paragraph find A.Beer is in a way good for people’s health. B.Beer is totally harmful to people’s health. C.High-fat diets are very popular with people. D.High-fat diets can lower people’s blood pressure. 13.What does the underlined word “curb” in the first paragraph probably mean A.Increase. B.Control. C.Cause. D.Continue. 14.How did scientists at Oregon State University draw their conclusion A.They studied some normal mice. B.They compared the results of different studies. C.They observed some patients with heart disease. D.They conducted tests on some overweight mice. 15.Which of the following can solve the side effects of XN A.Keeping learning. B.Doing more tests on mice. C.Adding some water to XN. D.Drinking more beer if possible. Being a people-pleaser (讨好型人格) is second nature to many people. We tend to calm those around us, often regardless of our own needs. Actually, it is unhealthy to do so. 16 Here are some tips one can follow. Be sure of your own value. You were created differently from every other human. Overcoming people-pleasing starts with clearly knowing the value of your thoughts and actions, and that your presence matters. By pleasing people at the cost of your own desires, you’re forgetting that you are here for a reason. 17 When something goes wrong, it’s quite natural for me to say sorry. It is pretty true of you if you’re a people-pleaser too. However, before words of apology trip from your lips, stop and look at the situation. Apologize sincerely and timely on condition that it’s really your fault. Otherwise just let it go. Keep saying no. 18 Indeed, getting over people-pleasing requires people to understand that you can say no and mean it. Saying no may be hard, but the more you say it, the more you understand how important it is to say. Speak up. People-pleasers like to agree with the masses. We are quiet, listening, waiting to agree on whatever decision is reached. Many times, I simply stayed quiet and agreed, even when I really didn’t like the plans at all. And bitterness surged when I was asked to deal with what I didn’t want. 19 Even sometimes you have to shout so as to be heard. Without any doubt, it’s difficult to go against the nature that you tend to please everyone around you. 20 It’s the same with me. The best part is we get the grace of a new day to try all over again. A.Say sorry actively. B.Apologize properly. C.It seems common to agree to everything. D.Chances are that you’ll fail into old patterns midway. E.What counts much is to change some of your daily habits. F.Saying no is always the first choice for many people to make. G.Learn to use your voice bravely if you’d like to overcome people-pleasing. 二、完形填空 Days ago, Adrián Rodriguez found a purse in a shopping cart at a supermarket. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible. “Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I've been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.” Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently. “The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said. “So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down. Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!” Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter's was an English-Chinese dictionary —the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment.” Peter thought. After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.
