三、阅读理解
Seven children line up, awaiting their turn n a slide. As each child rushes dwn, the nes behind laugh and cheer. Such scene is rare in Lags, ne f Africa’s fastest-grwing cities, with a ppulatin f abut 17 millin. But n the city’s utskirts, a garbage-site-turned-park is ffering rm fr kids t play. The prject is the brainchild f 17-year-ld Amara Nwuneli, wh wants t prve that even in Lags’ mst crwded crners, children can have fun.
Fr Amara, the path t building parks began when a terrible fld struck her hmetwn in 2020. Heavy rains swallwed entire neighbrhds, leaving thusands f families hmeless. “Peple just said it was gvernment failure r bad luck.” Amara recalls. But, later, she realized it was what was called Nigeria’s “climate apathy”: the tendency t view flds, heat waves, and drughts as islated incidents rather than cnsequences f a warming planet.
“I wanted t change the mindset,” Amara says. “If peple dn’t feel cnnected t nature, they wn’t fight t prtect it. And I knew that had t start with creating spaces peple culd actually see and feel.”
It was n easy task. Amara first cntacted the Lags State Gvernment, which ffered land but impsed restrictins that made lng-term cnstructin impssible. After mnths f dead ends, she shifted strategy and started lking fr alternative spaces that were accessible t high-risk cmmunities. Eventually, Amara secured a garbage site. She then mbilized a team f artists, vlunteers, and small dnrs t clear the trash and rebuild the site with recycled materials. Three mnths later, the park pened.
Amara is nw planning tw mre parks. She says cmmunities frm acrss the cuntry have been reaching ut t her team fr advice n hw t reclaim abandned spaces fr public use. “That creates a kind f cycle,” Amara reflects. “I take actin, thers ntice, they want t take actin, t. And tgether, it grws.”
21.What might be a prblem Lags is facing?
A.Insufficient public areas.B.Pr garbage management.
C.Limited recreatinal activities.D.Uncntrlled ppulatin grwth.
22.What quality des Amara demnstrate when cmpleting the prject?

In recent research, my clleagues and I set ut t investigate the neural mechanisms underlying experiences like slving challenging prblems. Specifically, we wanted t understand what happens in the brain while a persn engages in abstract and demanding thught — s we designed a study invlving math expertise.
Fr ur study, we selected 22 university students majring in mathematics, alng with 22 students frm ther disciplines. We asked the students t watch step-by-step presentatins that explained hw t slve several challenging math prblems. Thrughut this demnstratin, the students wre a cap cvered with electrdes (电极) s that we culd track electrical activity in their brains. After each presentatin, they had t reprt whether they thught they had understd the presentatins and hw engaged they felt during the experience.
We fund that students whse cursewrk invlved little mathematics shwed mre signs f cmplex activity in the prefrntal crtex (皮层), indicating hw hard they were wrking t understand the varius steps f the cmplex math demnstratins. Hwever, in the ther grup, we nted significant activity linking the frntal and parietal (顶叶) regins f their brain. Mre specifically, these areas exhibited a pattern f activity described as delta waves.
Sme recent research suggests that these delta waves may play a crucial rle in the cgnitive prcessing that supprts deep internal cncentratin and the relcatin f infrmatin between distant brain regins. In fact, we suspect that the lng-distance delta waves we bserved may play a central rle whenever peple engage in cntextual and cmplex prblem-slving. This suggests that engaging brain netwrks in this way culd be useful fr many tasks requiring cncentratin. It’s likely that when peple with extensive experience in a task are deeply engaged in that effrt, these same delta waves are invlved, even as the specific brain netwrks vary. It’s als pssible — thugh we’ll need t investigate further t be sure — that this state f deep cncentratin is generalizable: develping this way f thinking in ne dmain culd help yu in thers.
These findings suggest a trade-ff that peple shuld keep in mind — particularly as artificial intelligence and ther tls ffer shrtcuts fr varius frms f prblem slving. Each time we fflad a prblem t a calculatr r ask AI t summarize an essay, we lse an pprtunity t imprve ur wn skills and practice deep cncentratin. T be clear, technlgies can bst ur efficiency in imprtant ways, but the seemingly “inefficient” hard wrk we d can be pwerful, t.
24.Based n the study results, hw d Math majrs prcess challenging math prblems differently frm nn-Math majrs?
A.They experience less engagement during prblem-slving tasks.
B.They use mre areas f their prefrntal crtex t slve prblems.
C.They display delta wave activity linking frntal and parietal regins.
D.They shw slwer verall brain activity during cmplex prblem-slving.
25.Which f the fllwing best summarizes the authr’s view n the rle f “inefficient” wrk?
A.It helps thse wh are gd at subjects like math.
B.It imprves engagement but has n cgnitive benefits.
C.It wastes time and resurces cmpared t using technlgy.
D.It allws the brain t build skills that are transferable t ther tasks.
26.What might be the best title fr the passage?
A.Which t Chse: Efficiency r Hard Wrk?
B.What Benefits Us Mre: AI Tls r Deep Cncentratin?
C.Emplying Cmplex Math Prblems t Enhance Delta Waves
D.Develping Expertise Imprves the Brain’s Ability t Cncentrate
A few years ag, the City Cuncil f Mnza, Italy, barred pet wners frm keeping gldfish in curved fishbwls. The spnsrs f the measure explained that it is cruel t keep a fish in such a bwl because the curved sides give the fish a distrted view f reality. Aside frm the measure’s significance t the pr gldfish, the stry raises an interesting philsphical questin: Hw d we knw that the reality we perceive is true?
Physicists are finding themselves in a similar truble t the gldfishes. Fr decades they have been pursuing an ultimate thery f everything — ne cmplete and cnsistent set f fundamental laws f nature that explain every aspect f reality. It nw appears that this pursuit may generate nt a single thery but a family f intercnnected theries, each describing its wn versin f reality, as if it viewed the universe thrugh its wn fishbwl. This cncept may be difficult fr many peple t accept. Mst peple believe that there is an bjective reality ut there and that ur senses and ur science directly cnvey infrmatin abut the material wrld. In philsphy, that belief is called realism.
In physics, realism is becming difficult t defend. Instead, the idea f alternative realities is a mainstay f tday’s ppular culture. Fr example, in the science-fictin film The Matrix the human race is unknwingly living in a simulated (模拟的) virtual reality created by intelligent cmputers. Hw d we knw we are nt just cmputer-generated characters living in a Matrix-like wrld? If — like us — the beings in the simulated wrld culd nt bserve their universe frm the utside, they wuld have n reasn t dubt their wn pictures f reality.
Similarly, the gldfish’s view is nt the same as urs frm utside their curved bwl. Fr instance, because light bends as it travels frm air t water, a freely mving bject that we wuld bserve t mve in a straight line wuld be bserved by the gldfish t mve alng a curved path. The gldfish culd frm scientific laws frm their frame f reference that wuld always hld true and that wuld enable them t make predictins abut the future mtin f bjects utside the bwl. If the gldfish frmed such a thery, we wuld have t admit the gldfish’s view as a reasnable picture f reality.
The gldfish example shws that the same physical situatin can be mdeled in different ways, each emplying different fundamental elements and cncepts. It might be that t describe the universe we have t emply different theries in different situatins. It is nt the physicists’ traditinal expectatin fr a thery f nature, nr des it crrespnd t ur everyday idea f reality. But it might be the way f the universe.
27.What des the underlined wrd “distrted” in Paragraph 1 mst prbably mean?
A.Original.B.Accurate.C.Distant.D.False.
28.What des Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A.The need fr a cmplete thery.B.The lasting cnflict in physics.
C.The cnventinal insight f reality.D.The existence f the material wrld.
29.What can we learn frm the passage?
A.Nature’s mysteries are best left undiscvered.
B.An external wrld is independent f the bservers.
C.Peple’s theries are influenced by their viewpints.
D.It is essential t figure ut which picture f reality is better.
30.Accrding t the passage, the authr may agree that .
A.varius interpretatins f the universe are welcmed
B.physicists have a favrite candidate fr the final thery
C.multiple realities can be pieced tgether t shw the real wrld
D.there is still pssibility t unify different theries int a single ne
Hw Music Helps Ease Pain in Hspitals
Nurse Rd Salaysay uses varius instruments in his wrk — nt nly medical tls but als his guitar and ukulele. In the recvery unit, he helps patients manage pain after surgery. Alng with medicine, he plays music r sings at their request. 31 His perfrmances ften lead t patients smiling r ndding alng. Smetimes, their heart rates and bld pressure even imprve, and sme need less pain medicatin.
Music’s pain-relieving effect — called music-induced analgesia — is nw being studied scientifically. N ne claims music can take away severe pain entirely, thugh. 32
“There’s ften a cycle f wrry, pain, and anxiety in a hspital,” Salaysay said. “But music can help break that cycle.” 33 Over recent decades, live and prerecrded music have entered mre hspitals as research explres hw music affects pain.
What makes music effective against pain? “Pain is created by physical sensatin, ur thughts abut it, and ur emtinal reactin,” explained psychlgist Adam Hanley. Music acts as a distractin, pulling attentin away frm discmfrt. 34 Familiar and well-liked music tends t wrk best because it activates emtins and memries mre strngly.
35 A study frm the Netherlands tested five music genres and fund n single type was mst effective — what mattered was that listeners enjyed the music. Anther study fund that letting peple chse their wn music increased pain tlerance. Fcused listening, rather than treating music as backgrund nise, als imprves the effect.
A.But it des mre — it engages the brain bradly, changing the pain experience.

Shared Services Need Mre Imaginatin
Suppse yu need t drill a hle in the wall t hang an item but d nt wn a pwer drill. Yu may regard it as expensive t buy a pwer drill and cnsider renting ne. Sharing is the slutin. The sharing industry is an emerging. highly flexible ecnmic netwrk that allws peple t share resurces, either free r fr a fee.
The imprtant idea f the sharing industry is that peple might nly need an item fr a relatively shrt perid. The private part f shared services has been mving twards this area since the beginning f the 1980s, and then the public part has taken nte f the benefits and cntinued fr best practice. The United States and Australia amng thers have had shared services in gvernment since the late 1990s.
With the rise f the sharing industry, the best-knwn shared bikes and shared cars have gt a lt f public attentin. This kind f transprtatin is s envirnmentally-friendly that it is increasingly ppular amng peple in many cities.
Of curse shared services dn’t need t be limited t machines. The real pay-ff in shared services prbably lies in renting ut smaller, less heavy items. Anther example is an umbrella-sharing service. Since visitrs dn’t want t be carrying umbrellas all the way, it wuld be cheaper and easier t simply brrw an umbrella n ne street crner and drp it ff n anther.
Recently rganizatins that have centralized their IT functins have begun t take a clse lk at the technlgy services that their IT departments prvide fr custmers, evaluating where it makes sense t prvide technlgy cmpnents. E-mall and scanning (归描) peratins were bvius early candidates. Many rganizatins are nw ftering their dcument-intensive peratins is a shared service, There is n dubt that peple are calling fr the expansin f shared services t mre and mre treas.
36.What is the sharing industry?
