This year marks my eighth publicatin. It feels like quite an achievement, especially when there were times I thught I’d never get a bk put ut.
My dream f being an authr started as a child, as I stared at the shelves f bks in Oldham Library, hping that ne f my wrks wuld sit there ne day. It seemed like a daydream. But I still read whatever I culd, frm bks ver breakfast t the labels n shamp bttles. I learned hw t jin sentences tgether, trying t figure ut hw they wrked.
It wasn’t until my twenties, when I was ding a jb I hated, that I finally gathered up the curage t try writing a nvel. I taught myself hw t tuch-type and spent all my lunchtime in bkshps.
I tried t see all my effrts as practice runs, but the setbacks made it difficult t carry n. Writing ften felt like breaking a secret cde. What were publishers lking fr? What might sell? What shuld I actually write? There didn’t seem t be any answers t my questins, and I wrte many nvels in the years that fllwed. Amng all the rejectins, there were pieces f feedback and wrds f encuragement that kept me ging, and I held nt these wrds like lifebats. Mre imprtantly, each stry taught me smething new abut structure, character, dialgue, and even abut myself.
The first bk that made it was the ninth ne I wrte, which tk me eighteen mnths t cmplete. It gained great ppularity in twenty-five cuntries wrldwide, with film rights ptined by a majr Hllywd studi. This was a dreamlike mment, prf that all thse lnely hurs and drafts had been wrth it.
Since then, it’s been a rller-caster ride. Sme f my wrks slip frm my fingertips nt the page, whereas thers are an uphill battle. Questining if I was being unrealistic ften filled me with anxiety. Was becming an authr an impssible hpe? Was I gd enugh? Cnfidence has always been a blck fr me, but hwever painful r jyful the experience is, what I did have was determinatin. S, if yu’re n the lng, winding rad t yur dream, having n idea f hw t keep mving frward, this might becme yur secret weapn t.
24.What first inspired the authr t be a writer?

Mst peple have heard the advice t “sleep n it” when faced with a tugh decisin. New research suggests it may be grunded in science. While many peple reprt breakthrugh ideas shwing up in dreams, researchers have struggled t test this phenmenn because dreams are difficult t cntrl in a lab setting.
A new study frm Nrthwestern University shws the pssibility t influence what peple dream abut. The researchers used a technique called targeted memry reactivatin (TMR) . The study included 20 participants wh had prir experience with lucid (清醒的) dreaming, meaning they smetimes realized they were dreaming while still asleep. In the lab, they attempted t slve sme brain puzzles, each f which was paired with a distinctive sundtrack. Mst puzzles remained unslved due t their difficulty. Participants then spent the night in the lab. During REM sleep, the rapid eye mvement stage f sleep when vivid and smetimes lucid dreams ccur, scientists replayed the sundtracks linked t half f the unslved puzzles t selectively awaken thse memries.
The next mrning, participants described their dreams. Many reprted imagery r ideas cnnected t the puzzles. In 12 ut f 20 participants, dreams referred mre ften t the puzzles assciated with sund signals than the rest. These same participants were mre likely t slve the reawakened puzzles after waking, imprving their success rate frm 20% t 40% — which was significant.
Even s, the results dn’t prve dreaming directly causes better slutins. Other factrs, like heightened curisity abut certain puzzles, culd have influenced bth dreaming and perfrmance. Still, successfully guiding dream cntent marks an imprtant advance in understanding hw sleep may supprt creative thinking.
“Many prblems in the wrld tday require creative slutins. By learning mre abut hw ur brains are able t think anew, we culd be clser t slving the prblems we want t slve, and sleep engineering culd help,” said Ken Paller, the study’s lead authr and a pstdctral researcher in Paller’s Cgnitive Neurscience Labratry. If scientists can definitively say dreams are imprtant fr prblem slving, creativity and emtin regulatin, hpefully peple will take dreams seriusly as a pririty fr mental health and well-being.
28.In the experiment, the 20 participants are required t _________.
A.rate the lucid dream they haveB.pair the puzzles with sundtracks
C.talk abut their dreams the next dayD.wake up when having a lucid dream
29.What can be inferred abut the study?
A.Unique sunds can bst ur thinking.
B.Prir experience can benefit ur perfrmance.
C.Heightened curisity may enhance ur dreaming.
D.Peple may plant thughts in dreams fr creativity.
30.The authr qutes Ken Paller mainly t _________.
      A.draw a cmparisnB.present future prblems
      C.evaluate a statementD.highlight study significance
A year ag, Christie’s auctin (拍卖会) huse in New Yrk sld a cllectin f AI-generated art. The first-f-its-kind event sparked an utcry. Mre than 6,000 artists prtested that the AI mdels had been trained n ed images withut their permissin. While the auctin huse had argued that the wrks demnstrated “human agency in the age f AI,” critics saw the event as an example f an industry rushing t cmmercialize technlgy built n unpaid creative labr.
A viewer’s cmfrt with AI art depends n hw much they knw abut hw it’s made. AI’s rapid prliferatin int art has started t expse a gap between what the technlgy is and what peple knw abut it. Past research shws peple rate AI art lwer in creativity, value and emtinal depth. But I wndered whether knwledge abut AI shapes peple’s judgments and explains the bias (偏见) against it. T investigate, my clleagues and I cnducted three experiments f 100 participants each.
In the first experiment, when peple knew hw the AI system perated, they perceived the AI art images as less mrally acceptable, especially when the creatin f these images invlved financial gain and artistic recgnitin. But the artistic appeal f the images did nt change, suggesting that learning hw AI wrks made peple reflect n ethics, nt beauty. Psychlgists have fund that cues such as success r fame can lead peple t see smething as mre mrally gd. But we were surprised t find in the secnd experiment that sharing a wrk’s success like being exhibited, sld r praised did nt imprve the mral acceptability f these images. In a final experiment, we wrked with peple wh had nt been given any additinal educatin n AI t try t get a sense f what the average persn might think. We fund n strng autmatic tendency t see AI r human art as better r wrse by nature.
Overall, when peple knw hw AI wrks, they becme mre careful in judging its mral fairness. This suggests that educating audiences, artists and plicy makers abut hw technlgy wrks culd shape the future f the technlgy in the art wrld. Artists wrking with AI tls can help in this effrt by sharing infrmatin abut the mdels, data r instructins that they used and clarifying where their wn human hand guided the prcess. Althugh such penness may lead t criticism, it may als build credibility and equip peple with the tls t think critically abut technlgy.
31.What is Paragraph 1 mainly abut?
      A.The argument abut AI-generated art.B.The sale f the first-f-its-kind event.
      C.The achievement f Christie’s auctin.D.The tech built n unpaid creative labr.
32.What des the wrd “prliferatin” underlined in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
      A.Change.B.Decrease.C.Spread.D.Recvery.
33.What des the authr mainly d in this passage?
      A.Illustrate a pint.B.Analyze an event.
      C.Clarify an apprach.D.Make a cmparisn.
34.Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A.Peple Wh Knw Less Abut AI Art Have Mre Biases
B.Peple Wh Knw Mre Abut AI Art Find It Less Ethical
C.Peple Wh Knw Mre Abut AI Art Shw Mre Openness
D.Peple Wh Knw Less Abut AI Art Assess It Mre Critically
