When I first started sending ut my stries, the rejectins smetimes came with a friendly line:“Gd luck!” r “Try us again.” But ne day an editr at The New Yrker, Mary Kierstead, added a different nte: Yu need t learn t write badly.
I was crss. What n earth did she mean? I was putting myself thrugh all this truble precisely because I wrte well. I cast her nte in the bin and decided I wuld never submit anything t that magazine again. But her wrds refused t leave me alne. I began t ntice places, in the wrks f writers I mst admired, where the essay seemed t read awkwardly, repeat itself, even lse its smth rhythm n purpse. I thught f ne writer wh said that the best dialgue shuld sund a little chked, as if there were mre inside a persn than culd ever quite be said. All my fine wrds—the clever images, the careful little alternatives t “he said”—were, I began t see, like air filling a chamber when what it really needed was fuel.
What Kierstead was telling me, I nw believe, was t let g f my cleverness and fllw instead the natural vices f my characters, with all their silences and hesitatins. If the writing was a little plain r even awkward, s be it; every wrd shuld serve the stry and trust the reader t hear what was beneath.
I still struggle with this. I lng t reach fr lng and beautiful wrds, and I hate giving them up fr plain nes. But I try, day by day, t chke the fine writing ff. What cannt quite cme ut des cme thrugh, in the end. And everything depends n it.
24.Hw did the authr react when she first read the editr's nte?
A.She threw it aside. B.She thanked the editr.
C.She wrte back at nce. D.She asked friends fr help.

A.Their wrds flwed smthly. B.Their style stayed plished.
C.Their rhythm smetimes brke. D.Their dialgue grew cmplex.
26.What des the authr nw believe the editr was really telling her?
A.T cpy famus writers. B.T trust the stry itself.
C.T use nly plain wrds. D.T give up clever images.
27.What des the text mainly suggest abut gd writing?
A.Real skill cmes nly with many years.
B.Style matters mre than the stry itself.
C.Editrs usually knw better than writers.
D.What is left unsaid can still reach the reader.

Air pllutin kills tens f thusands f peple each year in cities acrss Nepal, Ethipia and Malawi. T help, researchers frm the University f Surrey have develped three new evidence-based tlkits that guide planners n hw t use urban greening—planting trees, hedges and parks—t cut pllutin expsure, cl verheating streets, and ease fld risk.
The tlkits, c-authred with lcal scientists and gvernment partners in each cuntry, draw n years f peer-reviewed research. Cntinuus hedges arund tw metres in height, with thick, hairy r waxy leaves, can reduce radside pllutin by up t 63%. Mixed planting that cmbines trees and hedges can cut radside pllutin by up t 52% in pen rad cnditins. Urban parks and tree cver can als lwer lcal land surface temperatures by 2 t 4°C during peak summer perids.
But green is nt always gd. Each tlkit als flags cmmn mistakes—such as planting trees in narrw street canyns, where they can actually trap plluted air clse t the grund rather than clear it.“The wrng tree in the wrng place can make things wrse, nt better,” researchers warn.
Prfessr Prashant Kumar, Directr f the Glbal Centre fr Clean Air Research, explained why cntext matters s much.“Urban greening wrks best when it is designed fr the place it serves. The pressures n cities in Nepal, Ethipia and Malawi are nt the same as thse in the UK, and the right respnse has t reflect lcal climate, water availability, vegetatin and the way peple actually use public space.”
Lcal fficials have welcmed the new guidance. Ganesh Paudel, Jint Secretary at Nepal's Ministry f Frests and Envirnment, said the practical Nepali examples made the tlkit “cntextual and adaptable” fr lcal planners. “It will help build lcal capacity and supprt evidence-based planning,” he added.
The takeaway, the researchers stress, is that urban greening is nt a ne-size-fits-all slutin. T deliver real benefits—cleaner air, cler streets and healthier peple—every planting decisin must be matched t the place it serves.
28.Why did the researchers develp the three new tlkits?
A.T study air pllutin deaths in three cuntries.
B.T replace parks with trees and hedges in cities.
C.T help planners use greening t tackle urban prblems.
D.T cmpare greening methds between the UK and Nepal.
29.What des the underlined wrd “hedges” in paragraph 2 prbably refer t?
A.Rws f thick leafy bushes.
B.Climbing plants n city walls.
C.Tall individual trees lining the rad.
D.Open pckets f grass and flwers.
30.What is the main idea f the third paragraph?
A.Greening is always gd fr cities.
B.Prly planned greening can backfire.
C.Trees wrk best in narrw street canyns.
D.Hedges reduce pllutin better than trees.
31.What may Kumar and Paudel bth emphasize?
A.Tailring greening t lcal cnditins.
B.Fllwing universal greening standards.
C.Speeding up planting befre further research.
D.Relying n freign expertise ver lcal input.

At any bus stp r in a queue, mst peple culdn't help keeping their heads dwn, scrlling(滚屏) n their phnes. But studies suggest that if yu resist that urge and let yur mind wander instead, yu may gain sme surprising benefits.
We seem t d anything t avid being alne with ur thughts. Scial psychlgy prfessr Erin Westgate cmpares the cmmn mindless scrlling t “brain candy” which ffers temprary pleasure, yet is f little meaning. She adds, what is f real meaning is high-rder thinking leading t human achievements.
Many peple fear bredm, but this fear is ften verstated. In a 2022 study cnducted by Murayama, university students were asked t sit alne fr 20 minutes with nthing t d but think. Thugh they had expected the wait t be unbearable, mst ended up enjying it far mre than predicted—finding the empty time just as pleasant as scrlling n a phne wuld have made it. We badly underestimate hw rewarding it can be t simply fllw ur wn thughts.
Mind-wandering is a distinct human gift that bsts learning. In ne study, Vékny and her clleagues(2023) fund that when learners' minds wandered their brains slipped int brief, sleep-like“ffline” mments. In these quiet pauses, freshly learned material was strengthened and allwed t take rt.
Mind-wandering is als key t prblem-slving. Peple ften find slutins better after unfcused thinking than intentinal effrt alne, especially during rutine tasks like driving r shwering. Even when peple are nt actively thinking, their brains remain active in a s-called default mde(默认模式), allwing ideas t cnnect in new ways. It's especially helpful fr cmplex prblems.
Daydreaming bsts scial and emtinal cnnectins t. A study fund imagining pleasant interactins with lved nes made peple feel clser. Scial daydreaming allws individuals t practice cnversatins, reflect n past interactins, and prepare fr future scial situatins.
Murayama says he nw tries t resist checking his phne during shrt waits and let his thughts wander. He finds simply entertaining neself mentally can be bth satisfying and meaningful.
32.Why is mindless phne scrlling cmpared t “brain candy”?
A.It des harm t the brain ver time.
B.It replaces higher-rder thinking.
C.It pleases us instantly but lacks meaning.
D.It tastes sweet but extremely hard t give up.
33.Why des the authr mentin the 2022 study?
A.T reveal the pleasure f daydreaming.
B.T shw the fear f bredm is exaggerated.
C.T state that the fear f bredm is cmmn.
D.T highlight the limits f mindless scrlling.
34.What des paragraph 5 imply abut the “default mde”?
A.Unfcused thinking sparks ideas. B.Intentinal effrt brings new ideas.
C.Cmplex tasks require active minds. D.Rutines invlve little brain activity.
35.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A.Stay Fcused in the Age f Smartphnes
B.Rediscver the Jy f Being Truly Alne
C.Unlck the Pwer f Yur Wandering Mind
D.Uncver the Hidden Benefits f Scial Daydreaming
