Twenty years ag, I received an ffer fr a minr rle in a small independent film called Scrpin Spring. I gt the script (剧本) and I didn’t read ne page f it, nt a wrd. Why? Because I wanted t regain my creativity and get myself away frm all the theretical (理论的) tensin I’d been carrying since thse acting classes in university. I wanted t g back t hw I acted when I first started, when I played this guy named David Wendersn, and reading just ne line f the script cmpletely unlcked the character fr me. I wanted t be back when I was a natural, a free actr.
Tw weeks later, I was n the set fr the film. I knew my man. I was a cruel drug dealer frm Mexic, willing t kill fr mney. I even lked the part: unshaven, greasy hair, black bts, leather jacket. Time t sht the scene. N prblem. I arrived in character. I didn’t intrduce myself t the ther actrs because my man didn’t care abut them and my man was ging t kill them in this scene anyway. Just befre we tk ur marks a prductin assistant came up t me, “Sme script, Mr. McCnaughey?” I tk it and just shved it in my pcket withut lking at it. All the actrs settled n t their marks and prepared fr “actin”. Well, I guess I lst my nerve a little bit because I decided it wuld be a gd idea, right at this mment, just befre we rlled the camera, t have a quick glance at the scene and the dialgue. My thinking at the time? If it was written well, I wuld immediately remember the written lines because bviusly that’s what my man wuld say, and if it’s nt written well, then, I wuld just be my man and d and say what he wuld d and say anyway. I unflded the script — my heart was racing and my mind went blank. One page. Tw pages. Three pages ... all the lines ... In German!
That directr never cperated (合作) with me again even after I was awarded an Oscar in Hllywd. Knwing yur man desn’t mean knwing German.
      24. Hw did the authr play the character David Wendersn?
      A. By taking advantage f his creativity.B. By imitating the best man in Hllywd.
      C. By learning acting theries in university.D. By fllwing the instructins f the directr.
      25. Why did the authr have n interactin with ther actrs n the set?
      A. He was nt welcme n the set.B. He didn’t care abut them at all.
      C. He didn’t knw them n his arrival.D. He did what the character wuld d.
      26. What can we learn abut the authr?
      A. He has a gd mastery f German.B. He made great achievements in acting.
      C. He played a leading rle in Scrpin Spring.D. He became famus fr playing David Wendersn.
      27. Which statement was the authr mst likely t agree with?
      A. Acting theries matter mst.B. An actr needs strng mental strength.
      C. A minr rle is less wrth great effrts.D. Preparatin speaks luder than creativity.
      C
“Anxiety.” The very wrd invites discmfrt. Its effects — shrtness f breath, punding heart, muscle tensin — are utright upsetting. But, as a dctr, I find that we tend t miss ut n many valuable pprtunities presented by this human emtin. In and f itself, anxiety is nt deadly, nr is it a disease. Quite the ppsite: it is a sign f brain and sensry health. Once we accept that it is a nrmal, thugh uncmfrtable, part f life, we can use it t help us.
We all knw wrking ut at the gym is hard. By nature, a “gd wrkut” is uncmfrtable, since it invlves pushing ur physical strength past what we can easily d. The sweet spt f exercise is always a smewhat challenging experience. Similarly, if yu want t be emtinally strnger, yu need t face sme tensin. Fr example, ne effective treatment fr fear is expsure therapy (疗法), which refers t gradually experiencing things that make ne anxius, reducing fear ver time.
Humans are scial creatures. When my patients learn t pen up t their partners abut their anxieties, they almst always reprt a greater sense f emtinal clseness. Als, as internatinal relatinship expert Sue Jhnsn teaches, when we express ur need fr cnnectin during challenging mments (e.g. “I’m having a hard time right nw and culd really use yur supprt”), it creates greater cnnectin and turns ur anxiety int lve.
Frm time t time, we find urselves at the end f ur rpe. Our respnsibilities pile up, ur resurces break dwn, and we feel uncmfrtably anxius — what we’re experiencing is called stress. Put simply, the requirements placed upn us are far mre than ur available resurces can meet, just like a set f scales (天平) ging ut f balance. Fcusing n wrk and pretending everything is OK nly leads t disastrus results. Medical treatment fr stress may functin fr a while, but it tends t make things wrse in the lng run. The nly slutin t dealing with stress is t d the maths t balance the scales.
      28. What des the authr say abut anxiety?
      A. It reflects mental health.
      B. It is an invitatin t diseases.
      C. It is a natural emtinal expressin.
      D. It csts us many valuable chances.
      29. What des the authr want t explain by mentining the “gd wrkut”?
      A. The science behind emtinal tensin.
      B. The imprtance f being physically strng.
      C. The difficulty f building up emtinal strength.
      D. The necessity f facing tensin fr emtinal grwth.
      30. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      A. The key t clseness is partners’ supprt.
      B. Sharing anxieties imprves relatinships.
      C. Humans are defined by their scial nature.
      D. Expressing feelings helps keep us ff anxieties.
      31. Accrding t the last paragraph, hw can we deal with stress?
      A. Devte mre energy t ur wrk.B. Increase resurces available t us.
      C. Seek prfessinal medical treatment.D. Master advanced mathematical skills.
      D
Many f us start exercising in the hpe f lsing unwanted punds. Unquestinably, aiming t be mre active is a gd thing. But if the main reasn is t lse weight, yur plan culd very well cme t nthing.
Fr starters, exercise is typically futile fr weight lss. Take walking fr example. A 150-pund persn wh walks fr 30 minutes will burn, n average, arund 140 calries. That’s equal t ne can f sda — nt exactly a great return n yur investment f time and effrt. It’s much easier just t skip the sda.
When exercise is added t a diet, the results are equally unimpressive. Researchers fund that a cmbinatin (组合) f dieting and exercising prduced n greater weight lss than dieting alne after six mnths. At 12 mnths, the diet-and-exercise cmbinatin shwed an advantage, but it was slight — abut 4 punds n average.
In studies where exercise has prduced meaningful weight lss, participants burned at least 400 t 500 calries during each wrkut n five r mre days a week. T achieve that, a 150-pund persn wuld need t walk at least 90 minutes r run 30 minutes each day. In shrt, the time spent exercising needs t g well beynd what mst f us are willing r able t d. And even if we manage t make that much effrt, ur bdies ften make up fr it by increasing hunger and slwing dwn metablism (新陈代谢), which ver time limits hw many punds we lse.
When exercise fails t meet ur weight-lss expectatins, we ften stp wrking ut. Perhaps the biggest prblem with exercising t drp punds is that it turns physical activity int punishment — a price we have t pay fr a slimmer bdy. Hw many times have yu heard smene say “I’ll need t d extra exercise” after eating t much? We treat exercise as a frm f self-punishment fr being “bad”. In this case, we’re unlikely t keep ding it fr very lng. The cnclusin is that we’re mre likely t treat exercise psitively and actually d it when we fcus n ur well-being rather than ur weight.
      32. What des the underlined wrd “futile” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Necessary.B. Basic.C. Fruitless.D. Painful.
33 Hw des the authr view the results f dieting cmbined with exercise?
      A. Ineffective.B. Limited.C. Satisfactry.D. Significant.
      34. What might happen when a 150-pund persn runs 30 minutes daily?
      A. He might eat mre than usual.B. He will burn 500 calries a week.
      C. He might have faster metablism.D. He will lse weight very quickly.
      35. What is the authr’s suggestin regarding exercise?
      A. Lwering ur weight-lss expectatins.
      B. Exercising mre after eating t much.
      C. Sticking t ur regular exercise rutine.
      D. Changing ur attitude tward wrking ut.
