Late last spring, I had sme persnal prblems and felt I needed help with my feelings. I nce heard that reading a sea-themed cartn and lifting weights wuld make me feel better, but I had already tried bth, and they did nt wrk.
What I wanted was a bk that culd give me advice n hw t live the rest f my life in a meaningful way. Then I remembered that a philspher named Baruch Spinza was knwn fr ffering real cmfrt thrugh his writings. I had wanted t read his mst famus bk, The Ethics, fr a lng time. I thught it was finally time t let his wrds calm me dwn.
There was ne prblem: The Ethics is knwn t be very hard t understand. S I psted n scial media and asked my friends if they wuld like t read it tgether with me. T my surprise, nearly 40 peple said yes. I made a 10-week reading plan, and we started.
Nearly half f the grup left after the first few meetings, but the rest stayed. We met every Sunday nline. Often, we came t the meetings cnfused by what Spinza had written. But after an hur f discussin, we wuld leave with a little mre understanding. By the time we reached the last chapter, ur grup felt very excited.
We realized that being tgether with thers, feeling cnnected t the wrld, and accepting the paths ur lives had taken — these were things we already had all alng. I felt saved, and I was thankful.
Why did we d this t urselves? Nne f us are philsphy prfessrs. We have busy jbs and many adult respnsibilities. But the experience was wrthwhile. Friendship grws when a grup wrks hard n a difficult task tgether. Learning can be painful and pleasant at the same time — and mst imprtantly, it is shared.
I enjy easy things t. But slwly, I have nticed that mdern life ften pushes us t accept t many quick and simple pleasures. Reading a hard bk will nt change that, r fix anything. Still, fr at least a few hurs each week, I can give my full attentin — tgether with friends — t smething that requires real mental effrt. And I feel a satisfying kind f tiredness at the end.
4. Why did the authr want t read Spinza’s bk?
A. T get cmfrt.B. T find guidance.C. T imprve ability.D. T impress friends.
5. What des “wrthwhile” (para.6) mst likely mean?
A. Useful and valuable.B. Respnsible and fun.
C. Painful but fruitful.D. Difficult but educatinal.
6. What lessn d I learn frm this reading experience?
A. Tiredness places peple under great pressure.
B. Reading bks is a special treat in mdern life.
C. Mental effrt imprves persnal cmmunicatin.
D. Peple may find meaning in demanding activities.
7. What is the passage mainly abut?
A. Nrmal peple’s figuring ut Spinza’s hard ideas.
B. Reading a hard bk as a team-building challenge.
C. The real secret t getting thrugh big and difficult bks.
D. Frm being cnfused nline t feeling better in mdern life.
C
Sme peple might think that a bk abut “the influence f the hrse n human histry” culdn’t pssibly be interesting. But in fact, Timthy C. Winegard’s The Hrse is fascinating. It ffers a fresh way f lking at hw imprtant hrses were t human develpment. And the bk almst didn’t happen — because hrses almst didn’t survive.
At the end f the Ice Age, sudden climate changes drve hrses t the edge f extinctin. The animal, nce fund acrss much f the wrld, became largely limited t an area frm Eastern Eurpe t Central Asia. There, they were hunted mainly fr fd.
Hrses might have gne the way f their extinct relatives if humans had nt dmesticated them like cattle. Then, ne day, smene decided t jump n the back f a milder-tempered hrse. That simple act started a revlutin that changed the wrld.
Riding hrses helped farmers take care f mre sheep and gats. It als helped hunters cver mre grund. When hrses replaced cattle, their greater speed allwed mre land t be plwed (犁地). This increased crp prductin and changed farmers frm peple wh nly grew fd fr themselves int exprters f gds.
Inevitably, hrses became instruments f war. At first, they pulled war vehicles carrying archers. Later, they carried sldiers directly int battle. The earliest knwn true cavalry (骑兵) unit belnged t the Assyrian king Tukulti-Ninurta Ⅱ.
In a fairly shrt time, cavalry units made the difference in battle. Thse natins that had hrses wn wars; thse that didn’t tried t get them. In many ways, these cnflicts created the wrld we live in tday. Alexander the Great extended his empire — and Greek culture — thrugh Persia and India and beynd, thanks t the success f his cavalry. Mrish invaders brught math and science t Eurpe n hrseback.
Hrses were als the deciding factr in the Battle f Hastings. There, William, the Duke f Nrmandy — wh had cavalry — sundly defeated the Angl-Saxn King Harld Gdwinsn. That victry created the mdern British state.
The Hrse is a well-researched bk. It is interesting, charming, and entertaining. But as the authr might say: I can lead yu t a bkstre, but I can’t make yu read.
8. What first helped the hrse avid extinctin?
A. Being hunted fr fd.B. Being limited t an area.
C. Being raised by human.D. Adapting t climate changes.
9. As a result f using hrses in farming, farmers culd ________.
A. hunt mre animalsB. prduce mre crpsC. raise mre cattleD. cver mre grund
10. What des the authr imply by the underlined sentence in paragraph 6?
A. Hrses were in greater demand than ther equipment.
B. Natins withut hrses fcused n trade instead.
C. The value f hrses was recgnized after wars.
D. Winning wars was the way t get hrses.
11. Why did the authr write this passage?
A. T intrduce and recmmend.B. T analyze and cnclude.
C. T explain and inspire.D. T describe and encurage.
D
Things dn’t stay tidy by themselves. If yu leave yur desk fr a week withut cleaning it, papers pile up, dust cllects, and things end up in the wrng places. The same happens with a rm, a bx, r even the universe. In nature, systems naturally mve frm rder t disrder unless we use energy t keep them rganized. This idea is knwn as the secnd law f thermdynamics (热力学), which says that entrpy — a measure f disrder — tends t increase ver time.
T help explain this, imagine a bx divided int tw parts, filled with gas particles (粒子) mving at different speeds. Nrmally, the particles mix tgether freely, and the system becmes mre disrdered. In the 19th century, a physicist named James Clerk Maxwell came up with a famus thught experiment. He imagined a tiny, intelligent being — later called “Maxwell’s demn” — that culd pen and clse a small dr between the tw sectins. The demn wuld let nly fast-mving particles pass ne way and nly slw-mving nes pass the ther way. Over time, this wuld separate the particles and create rder, seemingly withut using any energy.
If rder culd be created fr free, that wuld seem t break the secnd law f thermdynamics. Fr years, scientists were cnfused and debated whether the law was always true. They wndered if smething else — like infrmatin — culd act as a real-life “demn.”
S researchers at the University f Maryland built a mdel t test this. Their mdel described a device that culd separate particles and reduce disrder in ne part f a system. But here’s the key: the device did nt break the secnd law. Instead f using utside energy, it used stred infrmatin t track and cntrl the particles. In ding s, it mved disrder frm the physical system int its wn memry. As researcher Dibyendu Mandal explains, the rder created in ne place is balanced by mre disrder smewhere else. The verall balance required by thermdynamics is always maintained.
This shws that infrmatin is nt just an abstract idea — it is cnnected t real physical prcesses. Machines based n this principle prbably wn’t prduce large amunts f energy, but they culd still be useful. Fr example, they might help scientists cntrl tiny particles mre precisely in experiments r imprve medical techniques. What started as a simple thught experiment has helped us better understand hw rder, energy, and infrmatin are all linked.
12. Why des the authr mentin an untidy desk?
A. T explain a science idea.B. T questin if disrder is avidable.
C. T link habits t science thinking.D. T cmpare human behavirs.
13. What must Maxwell’s “demn” d t srt particles?
A. Speed up sme particles.B. Use utside energy.
C. Stp particles frm mving.D. Watch and recrd particle infrmatin.
14. What can we infer abut infrmatin’s rle?
A. It replaces energy.B. It allws n-cst peratin.
C. It mves disrder elsewhere.D. It helps prcess large data.
15. What is the authr’s view f the secnd law?
A. Maxwell’s idea shws its limits.B. It is still crrect.
C. It fits large systems best.D. Smart cntrl can break it.

Many peple believe that learning shuld be easy. There is a myth: if yu find the right methd, learning will becme easy. Peple search fr the perfect system t avid struggle. ____16____ Learning is a prcess f frictin (摩擦力), requiring yu t sit with cnfusin and discmfrt until clarity appears. This is hard learning — it demands effrt withut immediate reward.
When peple avid struggle, they turn t passive learning — watching vides, reading summaries and feeling prductive. But passive expsure creates nly familiarity, nt mastery. ____17____ It is slwer, mre frustrating. It invlves rereading the same paragraph, attempting prblems withut knwing the answer, and failing repeatedly befre getting it right. This prcess feels slw and painful. There is n instant reward, nly gradual imprvement.
One key element is deliberate repetitin — returning t material with deeper attentin each time. What was nce cnfusing becmes familiar; what was familiar becmes clear; what was clear becmes flexible.
____18____ Hard learning requires yu t think, nt just cnsume. Yu must explain ideas in yur wn wrds, test yur understanding, and apply knwledge in new cntexts. This turns knwledge int ability. Learning that avids struggle rarely lasts.
There is als a psychlgical barrier. Many peple mistake difficulty fr failure, thinking they are nt gd at it. ____19____ Lk at experts in any field: they rely n hard learning — they dn’t run frm difficulty. Their success is built n lng hurs f fcused effrt, repeated attempts, and willingness t stay with cmplexity. N methd can replace effrt. Techniques guide yu, but cannt d the wrk fr yu.
In the end, learning is nt abut aviding difficulty — it is abut building the ability t mve thrugh it. ____20____
A. Hard learning is different.
B. Anther key aspect is active engagement.
C. Challenging yurself is the key t prgress.
D. This prcess feels uncmfrtable but necessary.
E. And the sner yu accept that, the sner yur learning becmes real.
F. But the truth is far less pleasant: real learning is nt designed t be easy.
G. In reality, difficulty is nt a sign f inability — it is a sign that learning is happening.
