Late last spring, I had sme persnal prblems and felt I needed help with my feelings. I nce heard that reading a sea-themed cartn and lifting weights wuld make me feel better, but I had already tried bth, and they did nt wrk.
What I wanted was a bk that culd give me advice n hw t live the rest f my life in a meaningful way. Then I remembered that a philspher named Baruch Spinza was knwn fr ffering real cmfrt thrugh his writings. I had wanted t read his mst famus bk, The Ethics, fr a lng time. I thught it was finally time t let his wrds calm me dwn.
There was ne prblem: The Ethics is knwn t be very hard t understand. S I psted n scial media and asked my friends if they wuld like t read it tgether with me. T my surprise, nearly 40 peple said yes. I made a 10-week reading plan, and we started.
Nearly half f the grup left after the first few meetings, but the rest stayed. We met every Sunday nline. Often, we came t the meetings cnfused by what Spinza had written. But after an hur f discussin, we wuld leave with a little mre understanding. By the time we reached the last chapter, ur grup felt very excited.
We realized that being tgether with thers, feeling cnnected t the wrld, and accepting the paths ur lives had taken — these were things we already had all alng. I felt saved, and I was thankful.
Why did we d this t urselves? Nne f us are philsphy prfessrs. We have busy jbs and many adult respnsibilities. But the experience was wrthwhile. Friendship grws when a grup wrks hard n a difficult task tgether. Learning can be painful and pleasant at the same time — and mst imprtantly, it is shared.
I enjy easy things t. But slwly, I have nticed that mdern life ften pushes us t accept t many quick and simple pleasures. Reading a hard bk will nt change that, r fix anything. Still, fr at least a few hurs each week, I can give my full attentin — tgether with friends — t smething that requires real mental effrt. And I feel a satisfying kind f tiredness at the end.
