After cmpleting my training, I was sent t the village that was small and desperately in need f prper accmmdatin.
Thugh the lcal villagers were pr, they ffered their hmes, fd, and hearts as if I were their wn family. I was asked t

Many parents d nt understand why their teens ccasinally behave in a dangerus way. At times, it seems like teens
dn’t think things thrugh r fully cnsider the results f their actins. Teens differ frm adults in the way they behave, slve
prblems, and make decisins. There is a bilgical explanatin fr this difference. Studies shw that brains cntinue t
develp thrughut childhd and teenage years and well int early adulthd.
Scientists have cnfirmed (确认) a specific area f the brain called the amygdala that is respnsible fr immediate
reactins, including fear and aggressive behavir. This area develps early. Hwever, the frntal crtex, the area f the brain
that helps peple think carefully, cntrl behavir, and make wise decisins, develps later. Unlike the amygdala, the frntal
crtex is nt fully mature (成熟) until adulthd.
Other changes in the brain during teenage years include a rapid increase in the cnnectins between the brain cells, making
the brain pathways mre effective. Nerve cells develp myelin, which helps cells cmmunicate. All these changes are imprtant
fr the develpment f crdinated (协调的) thught, actin, and behavir.
Pictures f the brain in actin shw that teens’ brains wrk differently frm adults’ when they make decisins r slve
prblems. Their actins are guided mre by the emtinal and reactive amygdala and less by the thughtful, lgical frntal
crtex. Studies als indicate that drinking alchl during the teenage years can change r delay these develpments.
These brain differences dn’t mean that yung peple can’t make gd decisins r tell the difference between right and
wrng. It als desn’t mean that they shuldn’t be held respnsible fr their actins. Hwever, an awareness f these
differences can help parents, teachers, and thers understand and manage the behavir f teens during this imprtant stage f
      grwth.
      8. Why d teens ften act differently frm adults accrding t the text?
      A. Their brains are still develping.
      B. Their amygdala is easier t cntrl.
      C. They badly need life experience.
      D. They are mre influenced by thers.
      9. What d we knw abut the frntal crtex?
      A. It leads t quick emtinal reactins.
      B. It matures late and cntrls reasning.
      C. It is cmpletely frmed in childhd.
      D. It wrks mainly with bdy mvements.
      10. Studies shw that teens’ decisin-making is mre impacted by ________.
      A. their actins B. learned knwledge
      C. their feelings D. lng-term planning
      11. What des the authr expect parents and teachers t d?
      A. Frce teens t behave well. B. Treat teens’ mistakes lightly.
      C. Dcument imprtant events. D. Understand and guide teens.
      D
Scientists in San Juan Island are testing a new methd t listen t whales. They are using hair-thin fiber-ptic cables (光
纤) as underwater micrphnes. This technlgy is called Distributed Acustic Sensing (DAS).
Unlike traditinal tls that listen frm ne spt, DAS can use the whle length f the cable as a sensr. This allws
scientists t find the exact place f a whale and track its directin.
The researchers have already prven that DAS wrks fr large baleen whales (大型须鲸). In a test, they recrded the
sunds f fin whales and blue whales by using it. Nw, they face a new challenge: Seeing if it wrks fr killer whales. Killer
whales use high-frequency clicks, which are harder t detect (监测).
This research is imprtant. The lcal killer whales, knwn as Suthern Residents, are disappearing, with nly abut 75
left. They face three main threats: underwater nise frm ships, a lack f their main fd — Chink salmn, and txic
pllutin. Ship nise can cver up the killer whales’ clicks, making it hard fr them t hunt the already few salmn.
If successful, the DAS system culd prvide real-time data n where the killer whales are. Fr example, if scientists detect
killer whales mving twards a busy shipping lane, they culd tell nearby ferries t slw dwn r reduce nise, giving the
whales a safer path. The methd culd als pen a new windw int killer whales’ behavir and cmmunicatin.
With thusands f miles f cables already n cean flrs wrldwide, this technlgy culd create a huge glbal netwrk
fr mnitring underwater life and helping with cnservatin effrts.
      12. What d the researchers use DAS fr?
      A. Guiding whales. B. Tracking whales. C. Discvering whales’ fd.D. Repairing ships.
      13. What is the researchers’ next plan after using DAS n large baleen whales?
      A. T apply DAS t killer whales.
      B. T build a cheaper DAS system.
      C. T study fish species in deeper water.
      D. T recrd the sund f baleen whales.
      14. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
      A. Hw DAS wrks.
      B. Why it is difficult t find killer whales.
      C. What killer whales suffer.
      D. Hw the research is carried ut.
      15. What can be inferred frm paragraph 5?
      A. Ocean life will be prtected wrldwide.
      B. DAS has already wrked well n killer whales.
      C. Killer whales can reduce nise by slwing dwn.
      D. DAS may help prtect and study killer whales.

My parents had trained me t use my left hand frm an early age. As I grew up, I was accustmed t nt using my right
hand. I culd write with my left ne and d sme things with special tricks r techniques. Despite this, in the first days f new
schl, I always felt like hiding my underdevelped right hand in my sleeve (袖子) as if nbdy wuld ever find it ut.
It didn’t take lng befre Jeff Wilkins, the teacher f my engineering class, learned my secret and decided t d smething.
Jeff had been leading a rbtics prject in the schl and was expert in 3D printing technlgy. Besides, he hped t take
advantage f this hands-n chance t help his rbtics students learn mre abut engineering and hw building a rbtic hand
      wrked.
S in his class, Jeff annunced with great enthusiasm, “Yu’re suppsed t be engineering, cming up with new ideas and
slving issues. Nw yur new classmate needs a new hand s we’ll wrk tgether t build a rbtic hand.” His wrds fueled
      everyne’s curisity and creativity.
Fr the next fur weeks, Jeff and the whle class including me wrked n the prject. After sme precise measurements
and in-depth research, the class put frward a design draft. Jeff made a few adjustments and gave us sme practical suggestins.
With access t nline mdels and a 3D printer, we eventually created a rbtic hand, which was intended t lk gd and
      catch smething like a ball.

      46【答案】Dear Peter,
It’s wnderful t hear that yu’re planning t share a classic Chinese fable at the upcming Chinese Club activity! I’d like
t recmmend the classic fable Marking the Bat t Find the Swrd.
It tells f a man wh accidentally drpped his swrd int the river frm a mving bat. Instead f searching immediately,
he marked the bat’s side, believing he culd find the swrd by fllwing the mark nce ashre. This stry, thugh simple,
ffers a prfund lessn abut the flishness f ignring a changing situatin. It brilliantly reflects traditinal Chinese wisdm
that emphasizes flexibility and adapting t new circumstances, which is sure t spark a great discussin.
Hpe yur sharing is a great success!
      Yurs,
      Li Hua

Then came the final testing day in the science rm. The whle class gathered, watching breathlessly as Jeff carefully
laded the self-made rbtic hand nt my right arm. T everyne’s delight, it fitted quite well! S excited was I that my arm
trembled slightly. Having put a baseball n the desk, Jeff signed t me t pick it up. Slwly, I extended my right hand and
reached fr the ball. Successfully I caught hld f it and everyne present brke int cheers! Hlding the ball, I culdn’t
cntain my tears. Never in my wildest dream had I expected t catch smething with my right hand!
The life-changing gift fr me drew huge media attentin. When interviewed abut the intentin behind the prject, Jeff
said, “The kids simply wanted t help a classmate in need. Seeing them care fr the classmate, learn engineering thrugh this
hands-n peratin, and transfrm that care int smething real—that’s the true reward.” My classmates added that they had
gained nt nly technical skills but als a deep sense f pride in making a difference fr smene they knew. Fr me, I felt I am
n lnger “different”. My classmates didn’t just build a hand fr me—they made me feel like I belng.
