Eiji Watanabe, a neurphysilgist in Japan, recently discvered that AI can fall fr sme f the same illusins that trick humans. And that may help scientists understand why we fall fr them.
There’s a famus visual illusin called “rtating snakes”. The illusin is cl, if a bit headache-inducing (引起头痛的). But what wuld AI make f that? Watanabe and his clleagues wndered, t, s they presented the rtating snakes t PredNet, a deep neural netwrk trained t prcess visual data, but nt trained n illusins. And sure enugh, the AI was fled — it saw mvement where there was nne.
Accrding t Watanabe, this result prvides supprt fr the predictive cding thery f perceptin. The idea is that when we prcess sensry input — visual input, fr example — ur brains predict what they expect t see, then adjust fr things that dn’t match the predictin. Because the brain desn’t waste precius resurces building an image frm nthing, this is a very efficient way t prcess input. Hwever, it des lead t ccasinal mistakes, such as getting fled by very cnvincing visual illusins.
PredNet is trained t prcess visual infrmatin in a similar way. It predicts what’s cming in the next frame (画面) f a vide based n what happened in the previus frame. And that may be why it falls fr visual illusins, just like we d. This similarity in prcessing may be useful nt nly fr understanding visual illusins, but als fr better understanding the brain generally.
