A few years ag, Casey Harrell was diagnsed with a deadly brain disease. The disease left him unable t say
a wrd. But last year, a dctr implanted tiny electrdes in the speech center f Harrell’s brain. They picked up
brainwaves that a cmputer culd translate int wrds. Tday, the middle-aged man can “speak” again.
第 3页/共 15页
Using recrdings f his vice taken prir t his disease, scientists were able t train an artificial intelligence
(AI) mdel. With its help, Harrell nw “speaks” thrugh an electrnic vice synthesizer (语音合成器). And thanks
t that AI, his synthetic vice sunds similar t the natural vice he nce had.
“One f the things that peple with my disease suffer frm is islatin and depressin,” Harrell says. Withut
the new technlgy, these individuals dn’t feel they are valued by sciety any lnger. With it, he and thers like
him may be able t actively participate in sciety again.
“This new technlgy ffers by far the mst accurate speech-decding ever described,” says David Brandman,
the neursurgen at the University f Califrnia, Davis Health, wh implanted the devices in Harrell’s brain. His
team shared details f hw the technlgy wrked in the August 14 New England Jurnal f Medicine. Brandman
emphasizes this technlgy isn’t a mind reader. It can’t listen t smene’s secret thughts. It nly wrks when the
users want it t — when they are trying t speak. “There are thusands f peple in the US right nw wh want t
talk, but can’t,” says Brandman. “They are trapped in their wn bdies.” One day, this technlgy may assist many
f them t get their vices back.
Electrical signals frm the brain travel alng neurns t cntrl every mvement in the bdy. Different parts
f the brain turn n each time a persn waves a hand, runs, r smiles. Thse electrical signals travel dwn pathways
t activate the muscles ne wants t use. But injury r disease can damage parts f thse neural pathways. This can
keep the electrical signals frm reaching the muscles needed t mve r speak.
4. Hw d scientists make Harrell’s synthetic vice s natural?
A. By curing his vice and recrding it.
B. By recrding AI vice and training it.
C. By using AI t cpy his previus vice.
D. By picking up brainwaves t translate them.
5. Which aspect f Harrell des the new technlgy imprve?
A. Plitical status. B. Ecnmic incme.
C. Artistic appreciatin. D. Cmmunicative cmpetence.
6. What des Brandman think f the new technlgy?
A. It reads mind accurately. B. It disclses the users’ secrets.
C. It is helpful with a great prspect. D. It activates users t think nrmally.
7. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
A. The little significance f brainwaves. B. The riginal surce f electrical signals.
第 4页/共 15页
C. The key rle f the brain in the human bdy. D. The wrk principle behind the new technlgy.

The seemingly lifeless Arctic water belw the ice near Nrthern Finland has a temperature nly slightly abve
0℃. But sme peple are abut t jump dwn there t venture under the ice. Sphie Kalkwski-Ppe is ne f the
divers preparing t visit this strange, upside-dwn wrld where she will swim belw a ceiling f smth ice. The
marine bilgy graduate is part f an ice-diving training party that has gathered here.
It’s s freezing that even with thermal clthing and special glves, divers find it hard t use their hands after
just 30 minutes underwater. There are ther dangers, t, s strict safety rules are in place. Divers are tied t the
surface, using a safety rpe, with a handler n the surface cmmunicating with the diver via rpe signals. One tug
fr “OK”, tw tugs fr “stp”, three fr “cme back”.
Scientists, driven t understand the changes unflding here, are ging t extremes t carry ut their fieldwrk.
Sme are learning ice diving techniques, s that they may bserve underwater Arctic ecsystems and dcument the
quickening disappearance f the ice. Their shrt and smetimes dangerus expeditins are revealing the secrets f a
rapidly melting wrld. By studying changes in sea ice, scientists are able t gain a better understanding f hw
quickly climate change is unflding. Ice diving, in particular, allws researchers t cllect first-hand data n ice
thickness, density (密度) and mvement as well as water temperatures and salinity. The plar regins als have
unique plants and animals adapted t living in extremely cld cnditins, and sme f these rganisms are visible
during ice dives.
“Climate change is prgressing at such a rate that decisins are smetimes nt made with the latest available
scientific knwledge. This is a prblem. We need t keep science at the frefrnt,” said Sphie. But there is als the
exciting attractin f fieldwrk like this — ging t places where few humans can, in rder t dcument ur
planet a little better. That keeps researchers like her returning t the dark wrld under the ice. “There is, f curse,
als an element f adventure that drives us,” she added.
8. What is the authr’s purpse f writing paragraph 1?
A. T draw readers’ attentin.
B. T state the tpic f the text.
C. T highlight researchers’ hardship.
D. T shw a strange party fr graduates.
9. Why d sme researchers learn t dive under ice?
A. T test warm diving equipment.

B. T track rapid envirnmental shifts.
C. T experience adventurus fieldwrk.
D. T study creatures in the cld-water sea.
10. Which wrd can best describe Sphie?
A. Fearless. B. Cautius. C. Demanding. D. Mysterius.
11. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. The Fast Disappearance f Arctic Sea Ice

In the TV series, Dctr Wh, treebrgs supply fresh air t spaceship passengers. Part tree, part rbt, these
devices transfrm starlight int xygen. In Nnedi Okrafr’s nvel, Zahrah the Windseeker, children receive their
wn “flra (植物群) cmputers”. These are persnal machines made f leaves, grwn frm CPU seeds and shaped
int useful tech. Althugh these devices may be fictinal, flwer-pwered machines are getting real. This new
generatin f devices is a type f bihybrid technlgy.
Engineers have attempted t make rbts that wrk like living things. “But re-creating the cmplex functins
f a hand r a leaf is impssible with artificial materials,” says Anand Mishra, an engineer at Crnell University in
Ithaca, N. Y. Using life-frms t build machines can vercme sme limits f human technlgy, thugh.
Researchers like Mishra are lking at hw fungi (真 菌 ) and plants can give machines abilities they culdn’t
achieve with electrnics alne. Amng these life-frms, fungi have drawn special attentin fr their unique
bilgical features.
Fungi aren’t plants. They’re mre clsely related t animals. But Mishra used ne f the fungi’s mst plantlike
features, mycelia (菌丝), t help his bts sense their surrundings. Fungi use these rtlike structures t tunnel
thrugh sil fr nutrients. Mycelia als detect envirnmental cues such as light, heat, and chemicals.
Mishra’s team grew mycelia directly int electrdes (电极) n tw rbts. The fungi cmmunicated with the
rbts via electrical signals knwn as actin ptentials, whse electrical pulses are similar t thse generated by the
human heart and nerve cells. Mycelia culd prduce natural actin ptentials, and such randm electrical bursts
enabled the bibts t walk r mve arund. When expsed t external light, mycelia sent ut strnger electrical
pulses, which changed the rbts’ gait and prved their ability t sense envirnmental changes.
第 6页/共 15页
Using fungi in bihybrid rbts is still “pretty new”, Mishra says. His team nw hpes t test hw such tech
respnds t ther cues, such as gases and chemicals. One day, their rbts’ sensry superpwers may help ut in
agriculture. Future mushrm bts may walk thrugh crp fields, testing sil health and ther cnditins as they g.
12. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic f the text?
A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By raising questins. D. By making cmparisns.
13. Why did Mishra chse mycelia fr the research?
A. Because f its rich nutrients. B. Because f its limited frms.
C. Because f its sensry ability. D. Because f its external features.
14. What des the underlined wrd “gait” in paragraph 4 refer t?
A. The surce f light. B. The way f walking.
C. The reasn fr change. D. The ptential fr grwth.
15. What des the last paragraph stress abut fungal rbts?
A. Their weaknesses. B. Their prspects.
C. Their research prcess. D. Their prductin backgrund.
