Flu is easy t underestimate. The virus spreads s easily via (by means f) tiny drplets that 30 millin t 60 millin Americans catch it each year. Sme 36,000 die, mstly the elderly. It mutates(变异)s fast that n ne ever becmes fully immune, and a new vaccine(疫苗)has t be made each year.

“This virus is prbably the wrst influenza virus that I’ve ever seen r wrked with,” Webster says. Nt nly is it frighteningly deadly t chickens, which can die within hurs f expsure, swllen and hemrrhaging(伴有肿痛和出血),but it kills mammals(哺乳动物) frm lab mice t tigers with similar efficiency. Here and there peple have cme dwn with it t, catching it frm infected pultry(家禽). Half the knwn cases have died.
In thse deaths many public health experts hear the distant sund f a catastrphe(大灾难).S far this virus isn’t gd at passing frm birds t peple, let alne frm ne persn t the next. “It can make that first step acrss, but then it desn’t spread easily frm human t human,” says Webster. “Thank Gd. Or else we’d be in big truble.”
Maybe this virus will never learn the trick f racing frm persn t persn like the milder flus that empty ffices and classrms each year. Maybe it simply can’t. Or maybe effrts t wipe ut the virus will succeed. But experts are urging the wrld t prepare fr the wrst.
