W: I taught in Tky, Japan, and I thught I had prepared myself pretty well with the necessary travel bks and my helpful Japanese-Canadian rmmate. I was really excited abut teaching because it was my first paid jb. I began each class by intrducing myself. I culd see the excitement in my students’ faces as they had a real American girl. Their warm welcme made me feel cmfrtable, and s I let them ask me sme questins. T my surprise, I was asked questins like “Hw ld are yu?”
“Are yu married?” “ Why aren’t yu married?” “Why did yu cme t Japan?” I was really surprised. I culdn’t believe that the students culd ask such persnal questins and expect hnest answers. After this happened in several classes, I stpped giving the students chance t ask me these questins. I later fund ut that these questins are acceptable in Japan, and that is nt infrmatin that is cnsidered t persnal. Once I realized that the students didn’t mean t be implite and actually cared abut me, I felt much mre cmfrtable abut my first experiences.
