In a recent article in the jurnal Science, Mr. Graddl nted that three languages that are nt near the tp f the list f the mst widely spken nw might be there sn. These are Bengali, Tamil, and Malay, spken in suth and Sutheast Asia.
David Crystal, the authr f the Cambridge Encyclpedia f the English Language, says abut 1.5 billin f the wrld’s six billin peple speak it as a secnd tngue cmpared t the 400 millin native speakers. But anther expert n the English language says Mr. Graddl underestimates (低估) the future f its dminance. “Nbdy quite knws what’s ging t happen because n language has been in this psitin befre. But all the evidence (证据) suggests that the English language snwball is rlling dwn a hill and is getting faster,” he said.

Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amunt f listening they d befre they start speaking, and later starters are ften lng listeners .Mst children will “bey” spken instructins sme time befre they can speak, thugh the wrd “bey” is hardly accurate as a descriptin f the eager and delighted cperatin usually shwn by the child .Befre they can speak, many children will als ask questins by gesture and by making questining nises.
Any attempt t study the develpment frm the nises babies make t their first spken wrds leads t cnsiderable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjy making nises, and that during the first few mnths ne r tw nises srt themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and s n. But since these can’t be said t shw the baby’s intentin t cmmunicate, they can hardly be regarded as early frms f language. It is agreed, t, that frm abut three mnths they play with sunds fr enjyment, and that by six mnths they are able t add new wrds t their stre. This self-imitatin(模仿)leads n t deliberate(有意的)imitatin f sunds made r wrds spken t them by ther peple. The prblem then arises as t the pint at which ne can say that these imitatins can be cnsidered as speech.
It is a prblem we need t get ut teeth int. The meaning f a wrd depends n what a particular persn means by it in a particular situatin and it is clear that what a child means by a wrd will change as he gains mre experience f the wrld .Thus the use at seven mnths f “mama” as a greeting fr his mther cannt be dismissed as a meaningless sund simply because he als uses it at ther times fr his father, his dg, r anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitatin f what ther peple say cntinues after the child has begun t speak fr himself, I dubt, hwever whether anything is gained when parents take advantage f this ability in an attempt t teach new sunds.
      41. Befre children start speaking________.

B .is nt especially imprtant because the changever takes place gradually
      C. is ne that shuld be prperly understd because the meaning f wrds changes with age
      D. is ne that shuld be cmpletely ignred(忽略)because children’s use f wrds is ften meaningless
