Minqin, lying in the city f Wuwei in Gansu, is sandwiched between China’s third and furth-largest deserts. It is ne f the cuntry’s main surces (来源) f sandstrms. In 2007, then 26-year-ld Ma Junhe started Minqin’s first envirnmental prtectin vlunteer prgram named Save Minqin after reading in a newspaper that his hmetwn was at risk f being cvered by sand within 17 years. Recently, researchers have discvered a new bacterium (细菌) that feeds n plastics. Scientists say the discvery culd help reduce a fld f plastics that are ending up in the landfills (垃圾填埋场) and plluting ceans.
Plastic is ne f the mst difficult materials t break dwn r recycle. T slve the prblem, a team frm the Helmhltz Center fr Envirnmental Research in Germany fund the new sil bacterium. It was fund in an area with a lt f plastic wastes. The team discvered the bacterium culd feed n plyurethane (聚氨酯), which is widely used in making different plastic prducts.
It was reprted that plyurethane made up 3.5 millin tns f Eurpe’s plastics last year. One prblem is that recycling plyurethane requires a lt f energy. S mst plyurethane-based wastes are sent t landfills, where they can give ff dangerus chemicals.
The team fund that the bacterium culd prduce enzymes (酶) that culd eat plyurethane. This wuld make it pssible t break dwn plastic wastes. The results were recently reprted in a science magazine.
Hermann Heipieper helped write the reprt. He said that the finding “marks an imprtant step in being able t reuse hard-t-recycle prducts”.
