There are varius strage wars. There is "Strage Wars" the TV reality shw, where junk dealers bid (竞标) n the cntents f abandned strage spaces. Anther is between the self - strage industry and lcal fficials seeing the facilities as useless places. In the 1980s, I bught a huse in Cnnecticut. Thugh finally I listed it fr sale, I wasn't ready t be rid f its cntents, including furniture and artwrk. Luckily a facility called A Strage Slutin pened near my huse. I rented the largest unit and had the entire cntents f my huse transprted there. With my furniture, paintings and psters pressing against its metal walls, it lked like a mini versin f the huse. Over nearly 30 years, I had spent nearly $100,000 string things wrth less than a tenth that much. The bills kept cming.
When I wrte abut my strage experience n Facebk, divided cmments pured in. It was then that I knew I was nt alne. There was lts f well - meaning advice, yet it greatly underestimated my predicament. Still, I wasn't prepared t thrw away what I'd spent real mney n. But picking ut the things wrth selling, finding buyers, and then shipping them presented challenges.
Finally, my husband put his ft dwn. We made three trips t remve thse things. While I was dealing with the bxes f persnal papers, surprises came ne after anther. I fund ld event prgrams, my graduatin speech and lng - frgtten letters frm lved nes. Nw I am writing a bk abut these finds and the memries and emtins they evked (唤起). Planktn (浮游生物) buried in a small piece f rck may tell us mre abut the secnd - largest knwn mass extinctin. It als shws hw new mdern techniques are unlcking parts f the fssil (化石) recrd that have previusly gne ignred.
Jnathan Aitchisn at the University f Queensland, Australia, and his team extracted the piece frm a rck cllected in late 2018 frm the Sichuan basin in China. The rck is 445 millin years ld, meaning it frmed just befre the Late Ordvician mass extinctin. Inside, they fund eight species f radilarians (放射虫), including a new species that the researchers have named Haplteniatum wufengensis. They cncluded the fssils were s well kept because bth utside and inside structures were cmpletely surrunded by bitumen, a dark thick ily material, leaving perfect impressins.
"The high number and diversity f fssils shw that cean ecsystems, particularly micrscpic planktn cmmunities, were rich and active shrtly befre the extinctin," says Patrick Smith at the Gelgical Survey f New Suth Wales in Sydney, Australia. "The Ordvician ceans are far richer bilgically than previusly recgnized, especially at the micrscpic level. These fssils reveal active cmmunities f planktn at a time when Earth's ceans were n the edge f majr envirnmental change."
Traditinally, such tiny fssils are studied by melting the surrunding rcks with acid - a highly destructive methd, says Aitchisn. Instead, the researchers used a pwerful X - ray machine - the Australian Nuclear Science and Technlgy Organisatin's Synchrtrn, lcated in Melburne - t scan the rck pellet and, within secnds, generate detailed 3D scans f the fssils it cntained. "This is the biggest technlgical advance I've ever encuntered during my whle career," says Aitchisn.
Smith says ne f the key messages frm the wrk is that there is still a great deal f Earth's fssils t explre - nt because they are missing but because ur traditinal methds haven't been able t detect r recver them.
      28. What helps keep the radilarian fssils in gd cnditin?
      A. A new species.B. A special material.C. The utside marks.D. The extracted pieces.
      29. What is the significance f the fssil discvery accrding t Patrick Smith?
      A. Awakening the nce - quiet cean ecsystems.
      B. Stressing the urgent need t prtect the cean.
      C. Offering the ways t avid the mass extinctin.
      D. Revealing the richer ancient cean bidiversity.
      30. Why is the new methd better than the traditinal ne?
      A. It saves time and prtects rcks.B. It creates real fssils mre quickly.
      C. It melts surrunding rcks faster.D. It cllects mre rck pieces timely.
      31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Hidden Rcks Expse Earth's OriginB. Hidden Fssils Reveal Ocean Secrets
      C. The Wrst Mass Extinctin in HistryD. The Unknwn Planktn Cmmunities
      D
