In 1957 a dctr in Singapre nticed that hspitals were treating an unusual number f influenza-like cases. Influenza is smetimes called ‘flu’ r a ‘bad cld’. He tk samples frm the thrats f patients and in his hspital was able t find the virus f this influenza.
There were three main types f the influenza virus. The mst imprtant f these are type A and B, each f them having several subgrups. With the instruments at the hspital the dctr recgnized that the utbreak was due t a virus in grup A, but he did nt knw the subgrup. This ,then, was smething new, a new influenza virus, against which the peple f the wrld had n help whatever.
Having fund the virus they were wrking with, the tw dctrs nw drpped it int the nses f sme specially selected animals, which get influenza much as human beings d. In a shrt time the usual signs f the disease appeared. These experiments prved that the new virus was easy t catch, but that it was nt a killer. Scientists, like the general public, call it simply Asian flu.
The first discvery f the virus, hwever, was made in China befre the disease had appeared in ther cuntries. Varius reprts shwed that the influenza utbreak started in China, prbably in February f 1957. by the middle f March it had spread all ver China. The virus was fund by Chinese dctrs early in March. But China is nt a member f the Wrld Health Organizatin and therefre des nt reprt utbreaks f disease t it.
