Accrding t a new study by a British university, learning a secnd language can lead t an increase in yur brine pwer. Researchers fund that learning ther languages changes grey matter.
This is the area f the brain which prcesses infrmatin. It is similar t the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study als fund the effect is greater the yunger peple learn a secnd language.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, frm University Cllege Lndn, tk a grup f Britns wh nly spke English. They were cmpared with a grup f “early bilinguals” wh had learnt a secnd language befre the age f five, as well as a number f later learners.
Scans shwed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in peple withut a secnd language. But the lnger a persn waited befre mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure f the brain is changes by the experience f learning a secnd language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability t learn.
Prfessr Dylan Vaughan Jnes f the University f Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills.” Having tw languages gives yu tw windws n the wrld and makes the brain mre flexible,” he said. “Yu are actually ging beynd language and have understanding f different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study f native Italian speakers wh had learned English as a secnd language between the age f 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and cmprehensin were all tested.
