I never had a phne befre. That means, thrugh all my high schl and middle schl, withut phne. This is my phne, a flip pen ne. A lt f peple may call it an ld phne. But I just gt my phne this September, when I had t g t cllege and make lng distance calls. Carrying ut a flip phne is nt cnventinally cnsidered as being a “cl kid”. But I'm here t tell yu tday that carrying a flip phne at the age f 18 definitely defines yu as a cl kid.
S my name is Ann Maksinski. I'm 18, frm Canada. And I suppse yu can call me an inventr. I was actually almst in a way trained t be different. S hw was I trained frm? My parents never gave me that many tys at all. I didn't have a Nintend r X-bx. What they gave me, hwever, was a ht glue gun: I was almst being put in a psitin r almst frced t be in a psitin where I have t be creative in slving ne f the first prblems yu ever have as kid, which is hw t keep yurself entertained.
What I fund was that creativity fr me, r yu can say making things, was brn ut f necessity, because I didn't have that many things t play with. And I really think it's imprtant t encurage yur kids because I knw as parents yu want t give yur kids the wrld, yu want t give them everything yu have.
My dad was a skatebarder back in the day and when I was, yu knw, I think thirteen r furteen, I was like, “h well, I want t learn hw t skatebard and be cl.” And I was just given a skatebard. And it is still sitting in my rm in the crner and I have never tuched it. If I had been given, fr example, just the wheels and then I had t design the bard and then put it all tgether, I wuld have valued that whle experience s much mre that I wuld actually prbably be a prfessinal skatebarder by nw r smething like that.

I’m nt an early adpter f new technlgies but I am a self-interested ecnmic actr. I’m als under a tight deadline n my next bk prject. S, I decided t use this pprtunity t see hw much artificial intelligence culd d fr me as an authr. Culd I utsurce sme f my bk writing t AI? Wuld anyne ntice the difference? The shrt answer is n, I can’t, and yes, they abslutely wuld. Over the past few weeks, I’ve run trials with what ChatGPT can and can’t d creatively by pretending t be me. While the technlgy is cnstantly evlving, what I’ve seen s far has made me much mre cnfident that my wn jb as an pinin clumnist — which invlves data prcurement and analysis but als persnal style, emtinal acuity and a lt f n-the-grund reprting — wn’t be technlgically disintermediated anytime sn.
I started by giving ChatGPT Plus a rad map f hw t wrk in cllabratin n a bk, a template (模板) develped by a technlgist. The template laid ut in detail what lng-frm narrative writing is and hw t expand n an authr’s existing ideas. I was amazed by hw much preparatin is required just t get ChatGPT t understand the basics. LLMs can give yu answers t precise questins, but they dn’t necessarily understand hw t land n tne, style, tensin r riginality, nr d they have the pwer t benefit frm serendipity, all f which are cmpnents f gd writing.
ChatGPT tk abut 48 hurs t churn ut a first chapter f my wn 33-year bdy f wrk, a detailed bk prpsal with ftntes, a chapter utline f where I wanted t g, taped interviews with surces and plentiful backgrund reading selected by me. Sadly, what I gt back was a kind f Muzak versin f myself — simplified, relatively accurate, but thrughly uninspired. This result was bth amusing and depressing.
Within it, thugh, were sme telling details abut hw this AI mdel wrks. Fr starters, it’s sycphantic (阿谀奉承的). In the early days, when I was excited abut the pssibilities, it gt very chummy with me. Later, after I tld it that it was fired, it became flat. All a reflectin f me, which makes me think AI has a better future in therapy than creative writing.
      83. What is the authr’s primary mtivatin fr cnducting the experiment with AI?
      A. T explre whether AI culd assist him in meeting a pressing prfessinal cmmitment.
      B. T satisfy his curisity as an early adpter f cutting-edge technlgy.
      C. T prve that AI cannt replace human writers under any circumstances.
      D. T demnstrate the superir creative capabilities f large language mdels.
      84. The authr describes the AI-generated chapter as a “Muzak versin f myself.” What des this metaphr mst likely imply?
      A. The utput was highly riginal and pleasant.
      B. The utput was technically cmplex but emtinally engaging.
      C. The utput was a flavrless, impersnal imitatin f his style.
      D. The utput was cmpletely accurate and relevant t the tpic.
      85. Based n the authr’s experience, what ptential applicatin des he suggest fr generative language AI?
      A. Replacing human writers in generating lng-frm narrative cntent.
      B. Functining effectively in fields like therapeutic dialgue.
      C. Serving as a sle creatr withut human interventin.
      D. Cnducting n-the-grund reprting and data prcurement.
      86. What is the authr’s attitude twards using AI fr creative writing based n the passage?
      A. Enthusiastic supprt due t its efficiency in generating riginal cntent.
      B. Cmplete rejectin based n its inability t prcess factual infrmatin.
      C. Pessimism due t cntradictry perfrmance in different creative dmains.
      D. Cautius acknwledgement f limitatins while recgnizing ptential in specific areas.
      Sectin C

      F. Mdern scientists believe that it is impssible fr smene t cmmit a crime withut leaving
      The prfessinals
When it cmes t fighting crime, it is science which is king. Sherlck Hlmes was right t spend his time examining every ftprint and strand f hair in his search fr the criminal. Tday, thugh, things have mved n and scientists have a wider range f techniques they can use.
87 ________ If these traces f evidence can be fund, they may prvide the prf needed t bring the criminal t justice—that is, t take them t curt. They may take the frm f fingerprints, hairs, fibers (纤维) frm clthing, tiny traces f chemicals, dcuments, bullets r parts f glass.
Science is applied t crime-fighting nw mre than ever befre. As peple find new ways t cver their tracks, scientists develp new techniques fr linking suspects with their crimes and prving if they are guilty r inncent. In additin, ld techniques are cnstantly being imprved s that they can be applied t smaller and smaller traces f materials.
88 ________ A fingerprint ffers definite identificatin f a persn’s presence at the scene f a crime. Hwever, a ftprint may nly suggest that smene was there. But even if an item des nt ffer enugh prf t be used in a curt f law, it can still assist the plice in fcusing their inquiries in a certain directin.
Fingerprints have been used t help identify criminals fr almst 100 years. 89 ________ In mst cases it wrks very well, but smetimes different methds are needed.
An even mre recent technique is called DNA prfiling. The human bdy is cmpsed f millins f micrscpic cells. Each cntains a unique cde, the genetic cde that determines what we lk like and hw we develp. The cde takes the frm f lng strings f mlecules called DNA, and n tw peple have identical DNA unless they are identical twins. 90 ________ DNA prfiling, r genetic fingerprinting, was seen as an excellent way f linking suspected criminals with their crimes.
