China is widely knwn fr its ancient civilisatin which has cntinued all the way thrugh int mdern times, despite the many ups and dwns in its histry. There are many reasns why this has been pssible, but ne f the main 37 has been the Chinese writing system.
At the beginning, written Chinese was a picture-based language. It 38 back several thusand years t the use f lnggu— animal bnes and shells (壳) n which symbls were carved by ancient Chinese peple. Sme f the ancient symbls can still be 39 in tday’ s hanzi.
By the Shang Dynasty, these symbls had becme a well-develped writing system. Over the years, the system develped int different 40 , as it was a time when peple were divided gegraphically, leading t many varieties f dialects (方言) and characters. This, hwever, changed under Emperr Qinshihuang f the Qin Dynasty.
Emperr Qinshihuang unified (统一) the seven majr states int ne cuntry where the Chinese writing system began t develp in ne 41 . That writing system was 42 t cnnecting the Chinese peple and culture. Even tday, n matter where Chinese peple live r what dialect they speak, they can all still cmmunicate in writing.
Written Chinese has als becme an imprtant means by which China’s 43 is cnnected with its past. Peple in mdern times can read the classic 44 written by the Chinese in ancient times. The high 45 fr the Chinese writing system can be seen in the develpment f Chinese characters as an art frm, knwn as Chinese calligraphy, which has becme an imprtant part f Chinese culture.
Tday, the Chinese writing system is still an imprtant part f Chinese culture. As China plays a greater rle in glbal affairs, an increasing number f internatinal students are beginning t appreciate China's culture and histry thrugh this 46 language.

Attitudes t new technlgies ften differ by generatin. Generally, 52 peple are mre likely t accept a technlgical shift than lder peple. 53 , it is nt always the case. When yu lk at attitudes t driverless cars, there seems t be n clear 54 difference.
The public verall is 55 whether they’ d like t use a driverless car. In a study last year, f all peple surveyed, 48 percent said they wanted t ride in ne, while 50 percent did nt.
The fact that 56 t self-driving cars appear t be s steady acrss generatins. suggests hw transfrmative the shift t driverless cars culd be. Nt everyne wants a driverless car nw, and n ne can get ne, but amng thse wh are 57 t them, every age grup is similarly engaged in adpting driverless cars.
Actually, this isn't 58 . While lder generatins are smetimes reluctant t adpt new 59 , driverless cars prmise real value t these age grups in particular. Older adults, especially thse with limited mbility r 60 in driving n their wn, are ne f the classic use-cases fr driverless cars.
This is especially interesting when yu cnsider that yunger individuals are generally mre interested in travel-related technlgies than lder nes.
When it cmes t driverless cars, 61 in attitude are mre bvius based n factrs nt related t age. Cllege graduates. fr example, are particularly interested in driverless cars cmpared with thse wh have less 62 : 59 percent f cllege graduates said they wuld like t use a driverless car cmpared with 38 percent f thse with a high-schl degree r less.
The 63 f ne's residence matters, t. Mre peple wh lives in cities and suburbs said they wanted t try driverless cars than thse wh lived in 64 areas.
While there's reasn t believe that interest in self-driving cars is ging up acrss the bard, a persn's 65 will have little t d with hw self-driving cars can becme the mainstream. Once driverless cars are actually available 66 , the early adpters will be the peple wh can affrd t buy them.

    The Merci Train
On February 3,1949, New Yrk Harbr (纽约港) was an exciting place. Airplanes flew verhead. Hrns blew. Small bats circled in the water. Crwds cheered frm the harbr. They were there t greet a ship. On bard were 49 railrad bxcars filled with gifts frm the French t the Americans. There was ne bxcar fr each f the existing 48 states and ne t be shared by Clumbia and Hawaii. These bxcars became knwn as the Merci Train.

In the winter f 1947, Americans set ut t help. A train was sent acrss the US, stpping in cities and twns alng the way. At every stp, peple gave whatever they culd. Factries gave gds, clthing, and medicines. Grcers and farmers gave fd. The train’ s cntents were then shipped t France.
By 1949, the impact f the war had faded away. The Merci Train was their way f saying “thank yu” t America fr the help they had needed desperately. French citizens had filled the bxcars with gifts like hand-made dlls, children’s drawings, even wedding dresses. The peple sent the mst treasured things that had nt been lst in the war.
But the bxcars themselves were perhaps the mst meaningful. On each, the French had painted the cats f arms f all their 40 prvinces. These bxcars, which had nce been used t mve sldiers int battle, wuld never again be used fr war.
The bxcars were then delivered by rail frm New Yrk t each state. Bth children and adults waited eagerly fr the Merci Train t arrive. Everyne wndered what their state’ s bxcar wuld cntain. When the bxcars arrived and the cntents were displayed, there were celebratins everywhere. Speeches were given, parades were held, and the news f the event was bradcast.
A number f the states kept their wnderful bxcars. Sme have been carefully maintained and can be visited. Gifts can still be seen at state museums and histrical scieties. The Merci Train came ut f the ruins f war, but it is a reminder f internatinal gdwill.

If yu are a driver in a city, it’s likely that yu’ve experienced the frustrating experience f being stuck in a lng line f vehicles at a traffic light.
There’s gt t be a better way, right? Frtunately, engineering pineers have been thinking the same thing fr years and have develped an answer: smart traffic lights. Stephen Smith, a prfessr at Carnegie Melln University, develped traffic signals equipped with individual cmputers and sftware with AI capabilities, which can spt appraching vehicles and adjust their timing. When Smith installed a few test prttypes (原型) at crssings in East Liberty, a cngested area in Pittsburgh’s East End, he immediately gt results, even thugh there was a lt f traffic there. Drivers’ average travel time t their destinatins decreased by 25 percent, and they spent less time in traffic jams.
Such smart traffic signals can share their traffic plans with ther signals alng the rute. Instead f detecting vehicles within camera range, the smart traffic lights will make decisins based n lcatin, directin, r even planned rute infrmatin received frm the cars. The smart traffic lights prvide infrmatin n hw many vehicles, delivery trucks, cyclists, peple, and buses pass thrugh a crssing, and then imprve traffic flw accrdingly and autnmusly in real time.
While the use f the new signal cntrl systems is gaining attentin in the US, it’s still far frm being generally accepted and carried ut. Part f the reasn may be cst. Hwever, it’s said that such smart traffic signals will becme even mre imprtant nce self-driving vehicles cme int wide use, which transprtatin experts predict will ccur ver the next several decades. By aviding time wasted in blcked traffic, smart traffic lights culd play a significant rle in reducing air pllutin.

根据文章第三段“In the winter f 1947, Americans set ut t help. A train was sent acrss the US, stpping in cities and twns alng the way. At every stp, peple gave whatever they culd. Factries gave gds, clthing, and medicines. Grcers and farmers gave fd. The train’ s cntents were then shipped t France. 故选A。
根据文章第四段“By 1949, the impact f the war had faded away. The Merci Train was their way f saying “thank yu” t America fr the help they had needed desperately. French citizens had filled the bxcars with gifts like hand-made dlls, children's drawings, even wedding dresses.
根据文章最后一段“The Merci Train came ut f the ruins f war, but it is a reminder f internatinal gdwill. 因此,B选项“The Merci Train shws friendship between France and America.

由文章第二段中“Stephen Smith, a prfessr at Carnegie Melln University, develped traffic signals equipped with individual cmputers and sftware with AI capabilities, which can spt appraching vehicles and adjust their timing.
通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“If yu are a driver in a city, it’s likely that yu’ve experienced the frustrating experience f being stuck in a lng line f vehicles at a traffic light. 和第二段中“There’s gt t be a better way, right? Frtunately, engineering pineers have been thinking the same thing fr years and have develped an answer: smart traffic lights.

It is pleasant t drink cffee while enjying the falling/ fallen leaves!
It is pleasant t drink cffee while enjying the falling/ fallen leaves!
Sme audience (had) left the cinema befre the film ended/was ver.
Sme audience (had) left the cinema befre the film ended/was ver.
This precius graduatin pht reminds me f the wnderful memries my primary schl classmates and I shared tgether.

This creative chemical/ chemistry experiment arused the children’s curisity and guided them t explre each step carefully.
“引导他们仔细地探索每一个步骤”可以翻译为guided them t explre each step carefully,其中guide“引导”为动词,与arused并列,用过去式guided作谓语,用连词and连接;t explre each step“探索每一步”为不定式短语作宾语补足语;carefully“仔细地”为副词,作状语修饰动词explre。 This creative chemical/chemistry experiment arused the children’s curisity and guided them t explre each step carefully。
