Picass was nt the nly artist discvered by Weill. She was als the first dealer t sell a Henri Matisse
painting and she rganised the nly exhibitin f wrks by Amede Mdigliani.
Weill, brn in 1865, had a fascinatin fr art and a determinatin t challenge established habits. Her initial
gallery in Pigalle, then Paris, is said t be the first t feature nly emerging artists. “Place aux Jeunes (Make Way
fr the Yung),” read her business card. Her first shp was an antique stre perated with her brther. In 1901, she
set up the Gallery B Weill, using her initials (姓名首字母) rather than her full first name.
Weill started buying Matisse’s paintings in the early 1900s when he was little knwn and struggling t make a
living. In his rm with just enugh space fr a bed, he shwed her his wrks. “Quality still lives,” she remembered.
“I have taken a few t try t interest peple.” She sld her first Matisse in 1902 fr 130 francs. He gt 110 francs.
The painter’s wrks nw sell fr tens f millins.
In 1917, Weill rganised the first Mdigliani exhibitin in Paris, featuring 32 f his bld wrks. There was a
prtest, prmpting the plice t rder her t “get rid f the rubbish”. Nt surprisingly, the exhibitin was a flp. But
Weill bught five f the wrks, ne f which sld fr $170.4 millin in New Yrk in 2015.
The Orangerie Museum in Paris recently held an exhibitin “t give her back the place she deserves”. It

We’ve had e-bks, audibks, and f curse gd ld-fashined printed bks – but culd there be anther
way t read? S-called “augmented reality bks” — r “a-bks” by their creatrs – are clser t mass-market
prductin after a six-year prject by researchers at the University f Surrey.
E-bk readers can access backgrund infrmatin and extra features, but a-bks wuld allw users t swipe
their fingers acrss a line in a printed bk and have related cntent flash up n their digital devices. A reader culd,
fr example, run their finger ver a character’s name t get their backstry t pp up n their phne, r get a
reminder f the strylines f previus bks in a series.
While these features are cmmnly available fr e-bks, the challenge has been finding a way t adapt the
technlgy fr a physical bk “withut ruining the experience f reading a paper bk”, said Sprea, the lead
researcher. “Bks have lts f appeal fr what we might call their ‘bkness’, the fact they’re n paper and yu
handle them a certain way,” he said.
The research team has just launched its third generatin f the a-bk, having experimented with a number f
techniques, including the use f inks that react t light and activate when yu turn a page. That methd prved nt
t be pssible utside a lab because “there’s nt enugh prtectin frm xygen and misture (湿 度 ) in the
atmsphere,” Sprea said. The latest slutin is t place ultra-thin slar panels between tw halves f a single sheet
f paper, which “awakens” the a-bk’s special prperties when a “magic bkmark” is laid n t a page.
The team are nw wrking t develp the paper s that it feels less “unwieldy and thick”, Sprea said. The
prject has s far been helped with a $900,000 f gvernment funding and the team is hping t get bk industry
interest t help further develp and refine the technlgy.
8. What are ideal a-bks like?
A. They are cnnected t digital devices.
B. They keep the feel f physical bks.
C. They prvide access t extra infrmatin.
D. They remind readers f previus plts.
9. What is the main challenge in adapting technlgy fr a-bks?
A. Bsting energy-efficiency. B. Obtaining gvernment funding.
第 9页/共 16页
C. Reducing the cst f prductin. D. Finding the apprpriate materials.
10. What is the functin f a “magic bkmark”?
A. T prtect the slar panels. B. T mark the favrite parts.
C. T activate the extra features. D. T sense the human tuch.
11. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Funding matters t technlgy.
B. E-bks are becming utdated.
C. Printed bks are still in favr.
D. A-bks are clser t the market.

Transprt cmpanies have tried varius ways f encuraging curtesy during the rush hur, and researchers
may have fund the mst effective yet.
Prscial behavir, r the act f helping thers, is key t city life. But as Francesc Pagnini, a prfessr f
clinical psychlgy at the Universita Cattlica nted: “The envirnmental factrs that trigger (触发) such behavir
remain little explred.” Therefre, he led a study t examine whether unexpected events might inspire cmmuters
t behave mre generusly.
His team tk t the Milan subway where they barded rush hur trains 140 times. First, a wman wh
appeared t be heavily pregnant entered a busy carriage. The team recrded whether anyne gave up a seat. They
then repeated this prcess, but with a twist: Anther member f the research team, dressed as Batman, entered the
carriage frm anther dr f the train.
The results were dramatic. In the presence f Batman, passengers were much mre likely t ffer their seat: 67
per cent did s, cmpared with just 38 per cent when Batman was absent. The Batman cstume may have
mtivated passengers t d the “right” thing. Psychlgists call this “priming”. Interestingly, nearly half f the
generus cmmuters later said that they had nt sptted the superher.
Hwever, this perspective cmes with a warning: attempts t imitate famus studies that claimed t shw
priming in actin have failed, leading researchers t dubt whether it really happens at all. Fr that reasn, Pagnini
leans twards anther pssible interpretatin: that the sight f Batman brke cmmuters ut f their rutines,
allwing them t pay mre attentin t their surrundings and, with it, the needs f thers. Even thugh many f
the helpful passengers claimed nt t have nticed Batman at all, vigilance is thught t be infectius. When sme
individuals becme mre alert, thers fllw withut quite knwing why. The effect might therefre ripple thrugh

a carriage, causing peple t act mre cnsiderately, which means the Batman effect might nt have depended n
Batman at all.
12. What was the main fcus f Pagnini’s study in Milan?
A. Behaviral difference acrss cities. B. Daily rutines f cmmuters.
C. Effectiveness f curtesy campaigns. D. Impact f nvelty n kindness.
13. What can we knw abut the study?
A. It invlved repeated trials. B. It emplyed a team f Batmen.
C. It drew attentin acrss the train. D. It cnfirmed priming theries.
14. Which f the fllwing can be called “priming”?
A. Sweet taste increasing hunger. B. Crying faces bsting md.
C. Bright lights imprving visin. D. Hliday music increasing gift sales.
15. What is the main idea f the last paragraph?
A. Dubts abut famus studies. B. Effects f infectius behavirs.
C. A different explanatin fr results. D. An advance warning abut failure.
