When we see babies r pets, we can’t help gently tuching them t shw ur lve. And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shws that it’s different fr plants.
A study, published in The Plant Jurnal, shws that plants dn’t “like” t be tuched. That’s because tuching changes their genes (基因) and, even wrse, can slw their grwth.
Prfessr Jim Whelan f the La Trbe Institute in Australia gave an explanatin. “The lightest tuch frm a human, animal, insect, r even plants tuching each ther in the wind, leads t a huge gene change in the plant,” Science Daily reprted.
In rder t test the thery, the scientists did an experiment n plants. They grew a number f plants t the age f fur weeks. Then they tuched them with a paintbrush every 12 hurs ver a 36-hur perid.
They fund that as a respnse t the tuch, the mitchndria (线粒体) in the plants had been partly destryed. The mitchndria, as Science Alert nted, are the “pwerhuse f the cell (细胞)”. The mitchndria prduce energy fr the rest f the cell in bth animals and plants.
If this “pwerhuse” is weakened, the plants will lse a large amunt f energy that shuld have supprted their grwth. Whelan further explained t Science Daily, “If the tuching is repeated, then plant grwth is reduced by up t 30 percent.”
Althugh the prcess des have a strng effect n plants, usually the plants survive. Tuching changes the plants, but it’s nt necessarily a bad change.
Accrding t Science Alert, frequent tuching r mving plants will make them grw shrter than ther nes. The researchers believe this change, in sme way, culd be helpful. It may help plants fight threats t their health such as insects and bad weather.
The new research findings have led t a deeper understanding f the plants’ respnse t tuching. And the research might “pen up new ways t reduce sensitivity (敏感性) and imprve grwth in the future”, Science Alert reprted.
