In Antarctica, my team really wanted t capture the mment when emperr penguin (企鹅) chicks jump int the cean fr their first swim. We had been in Antarctica fr tw mnths befre it was time fr these chicks t fledge. Fledging is when birds grw feathers that help them fly r, in the case f penguins, swim. Mm and Dad have headed ut t sea fr gd, and the five-mnth-ld chicks are realizing their parents aren’t cming back: They must hunt fr themselves. S these penguin “teenagers” frm little grups and start waddling (摇摆) tward the sea tgether. The yung penguins lk messy as they shed the sft feathers that keep them warm and grw ut their adult swimming feathers. Each has a unique by-band-style haircut.
The penguins must walk abut 15 miles frm the hme atp an enrmus ice shelf t reach the water’s edge. We fllw the birds frm afar n snwmbiles. They crwd tgether at the end f the path and stare dwn like, “what’s that?” They’ve never seen the cean befre! T my amazement, I see several hundred chicks gather at the edge f a 50-ft ice cliff! They stand tgether fr fur hurs, staring at the rugh water belw. Finally ne chick steps in frnt f the thers, waddles t the edge f the cliff and dives ff the side. I watch in fear, afraid the bird wn’t resurface in the water after the lng fall. But then it makes it, back up! It swims farther ut t sea, never lking back.
At first the ther penguins are like “Oh my gsh, what did Steve just d?” But then they realize it’s safe t jump. They begin t pur ff the cliff, several little sft balls at a time. Sme jump ff stylishly, and thers slip and fall backward. Sme even flap their wings as if they’ll fly. This dive is their entrance int adulthd. They’ll swim ut t sea and wn’t return t the hme fr several years. Hw lucky we are t see this huge mment in their lives.
What des fledging mean fr penguins?
A.They’ll fly like ther birds.B.They’ll lk fr their parents.

Mst f us have sme “gut feelings” that we can’t explain. Fr example, when we hunt fr a new huse, we might suddenly like it a lt r dislike it right away. Or when we meet new peple, we make instant judgments n them withut careful thught. Research dne by Leeds University shws that these feelings, r intuitins (本能), are real and we shuld take them seriusly.
Accrding t the research, intuitin is the result f the way ur brains stre, prcess and btain infrmatin n a subcnscius (潜意识的) level, and s is a real psychlgical phenmenn that needs further study t help us unlck its ptential.
There are many cases where intuitin prevented majr disasters, and cases f remarkable recveries when dctrs fllwed their gut feelings. Yet, science has histrically questined the cncept f intuitin, labelling (标签) it as “anti-scientific”. Thrugh analysis f a wide range f research papers examining the phenmenn, researchers have cncluded that intuitin is the brain drawing n past experiences and external cues t decide — but ne that happens s fast that the reactin is n a nn-cnscius level. All we’re aware f is a general feeling that smething is right r wrng.
Researchers believe that peple usually experience true intuitin when they are under severe time pressure r in a situatin f infrmatin verlad r acute danger, where cnscius analysis f the situatin may be difficult r impssible. They cite a Frmula One driver, wh nce braked suddenly befre a sharp U-turn withut knwing why. This autmatic reactin saved him frm crashing int a pile f cars ahead, likely preventing a fatal accident. Thugh he culdn’t explain his urge t stp, it verrde his cmpetitive drive t win. After psychlgists shwed the driver a vide replay, he realized at that very mment the crwd wasn’t cheering as usual — they std frzen, staring in the ppsite directin as he apprached the U-turn. That was the cue. He didn’t cnsciusly prcess this, but he knew smething was wrng and stpped in time.
Researchers believe that all intuitive experiences are based n the autmatic evaluatin f such internal and external cues. They say that we clearly need bth cnscius and nn - cnscius thught prcesses, but neither is superir t the ther.
What des the research frm Leeds University indicate?
Gut feelings are nt reliable in daily life.
Peple ught t trust their intuitive feelings.
Intuitin is just a randm psychlgical respnse.

Accrding t Paragraph 3, what can we infer abut intuitin?
Intuitin is a randm guess with n lgical basis.
Intuitin nly wrks in life - threatening situatins.
Intuitin relies n cnscius analysis f visible dangers.
Intuitin invlves subcnscius prcessing f external cues.
Which f the fllwing real-life situatins best illustrates the applicatin f intuitin?
A shpper picks a prduct simply because its package lks attractive.
A firefighter suddenly rerutes a rescue missin after sensing sme hidden risks.
A student slves math prblems by strictly fllwing frmulas and lgical reasning.
A student quickly guesses randm answers withut cnsideratin during a timed quiz.
What is the authr’s main purpse in writing this article?
T describe hw brains prcess external cues.
T criticize the veruse f intuitin in daily life.
T cmpare cnscius and subcnscius thinking.
T explain the scientific basis and value f intuitin.

Expsing this bias is imprtant, the research team says, because it's key t accurately understanding the wrld. We als might be missing ut n the ptential fr a win-win.
If yu're wrried abut yur wn zer-sum thinking, there's hpe. Time is n yur side." If anything, it might be a reasn t call yur grandparent, call an lder persn in yur life. Get advice frm them, because they might ffer a different perspective,"Olivieri says.
Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic f zer-sum thinking?
      By giving age-based cmparisns.
      By describing pssible scial effects.
      By citing familiar real-life examples.
      By presenting recent research findings.
Why des Prfessr Keysar mentin immigrants?
      T highlight pssible ecnmic cncems.
T clarify the critical rle immigrants play.
T shw a wrng belief abut immigrants.
T cmpare jb cmpetitin amng grups.
Hw are yung peple influenced by cmpetitive envirnments?
      They cnsider resurces as limited.
They gain a mre psitive utlk.
They feel mre pressure frm thers.
They are mre likely t avid risks.
Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
