Recently, I was talking with the mther f a student I taught nearly 15 years ag. “He still has his magazine! I knw exactly where it is,” she said. It might be surprising that a yung adult has kept a middle schl English assignment fr ver a decade, but I ften hear this abut my favrite activity: the magazine prject.
Originally, this prject was designed t slve a cmmn prblem in teaching writing: Hw can we fully engage students s that they will take the time t edit, revise, and plish their wrk? I knw that letting students chse their writing tpics can imprve engagement, s I created a prject that asks students t chse a tpic f persnal interest and spend mst f a semester writing, designing, and publishing their wn magazine n that tpic. The cmbinatin f tpic chice and a final published magazine greatly imprves my students’ investment in their writing all semester lng.
When I intrduce the prject, this big chice usually attracts students, but many dn’t believe that they really d get t chse. They fire questins at me, asking if their whle magazine can be abut adventure rides, r the vast mystery f space. I always assure them that they can write abut whatever interests them. I can’t pssibly anticipate what kinds f writing might engage every eighth grader, and giving them a free chice is the best way t d that. Cnsequently, ur classrm becmes lively as writers eagerly share ideas.
Twenty-five years ag, students stuck their pages tgether. But nw we give them the ptin f creating an nline magazine using mdern technlgy. This eliminates printing expenses while develping valuable cmputer skills. We usually schedule the final due date just befre ur schl’s pen huse s that the magazines can be displayed fr the cmmunity.
These unique magazines make a pwerful statement abut what matters t ur students. And every time a frmer student tells me they still keep their magazine, it cnfirms the true meaning f this prject.
      24. What was the students’ main prblem in writing?
      A. Lw cnfidence.B. Limited techniques.
      C. Weak mtivatin.D. Insufficient materials.

      C. Talks with famus writers.D. Discussin f mysteries.
      26. What des the authr want t cnvey in the last paragraph?

      B. Gd habits shuld be frmed early.
      C. Mdern technlgy transfrms educatin.
      D. Persnal invlvement creates lasting value.

Scientists have taken t the saln after realising hairdressers may be an “under-recgnized” frce in fueling climate actin. Alngside their craft, hairdressers are knwn fr their cnversatin skills, wh ften act as an agny aunt, adviser and friend rlled int ne. New research frm the University f Bath’s Centre fr Climate Change and Scial Transfrmatin (CAST) reveals this is what makes hair salns centers f trust that culd be used t encurage cnversatins arund climate change.
The research team interviewed 30 UK saln wners abut sustainability, and then ran a natinwide interventin in 25 sustainable salns using Mirrr Talkers, where ec-tips are placed n saln mirrrs t engender discussins n sustainable haircare practices.
“The carbn ftprint f shamp is mstly in the ht water used,” says Denise Baden f the University f Suthamptn. “Simple messages like ‘mst f us use t much shamp and shamp t ften’ can spark cnversatins abut hw shamping less and at lwer temperatures saves time, mney, energy, water and is better fr yur skin and hair.”
The study fund nearly 73% f saln clients were likely t change their haircare rutines after cnversatins sparked by the Mirrr Talkers, sme even switching t ec-friendly prducts, using cler water, and adpting greener habits at hme.
Researchers say this demnstrates hw hairdressers have an “untapped ability” t weave climate change int everyday cnversatins and actins. They are nw urging plicymakers t rll ut tls like Mirrr Talkers natinally. “If we’re serius abut building a public mvement fr climate actin, then it’s time t invest in these unsung influencers because real change starts in everyday cnversatins,” says Dr Sam Hamptn f CAST.
Matilda Cllins, a senir directr and stylist, says the Mirrr Talkers initiative culd gain psitive utcmes if the experience “feels natural and engages clients withut being verly virtuus”. She adds, “Ultimately, the trust a stylist builds with the client is what will drive ptential psitive changes in behaviur. It culd be a great educatin platfrm and a cnversatin starter, hwever.”
28.What des the underlined wrd “engender” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Stimulate.B. Maintain.C. Simplify.D. Cntrl.
29.What is the fcus f the third paragraph?

      C. The functin f ec-tips in salns.D. The strategy f starting cnversatins.
30.What can we infer frm Dr Sam Hamptn’s wrds?
      A. Sund plicies encurage investment.
      B. Daily cnversatins can make a difference.
      C. Unsung influencers need prfessinal training.
      D. Mirrr Talkers has gained natinwide ppularity.
31.Which f the fllwing can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Salns: Overlked Centers t Build Trust
      B. Haircare: A Hidden Surce f Carbn Ftprint

Grief can bring waves f heartache—but fr mst peple, thse feelings gradually fade. Fr sme, they dn’t. The lss remains intense, persistent, and difficult t handle in daily life. This cnditin, knwn as prlnged grief disrder (PGD), was added t the Diagnstic and Statistical Manual f Mental Disrders 5 (DSM-5) in 2022.
“There’s smething blcking their ability t finally say I have t accept this,” says Katherine Shear, directr f the Center fr Prlnged Grief at Clumbia University. Researchers are nw beginning t understand why PGD may invlve breakdwns in the brain systems that gvern attachment and reward, accrding t a 2026 study published in Trends in Neursciences. In peple with prlnged grief, thse systems may cntinue t signal that the lst lved ne is still expected, creating a cnflict between memry and reality.
PGD is a "lng-term, intense, painful reactin t lss," says Hlly Prigersn at Weill Crnell Medicine. Individuals remain “stuck", marked by persistent yearning and nt accepting the reality f the lss. Grief is cnsidered PGD when symptms last lnger than 12 mnths.
Hw des it affect the brain? Regins invlved in reward and mtivatin appear t remain active. “Peple with severe grief are still expecting the existence f what is gne, making it harder fr the brain t update and accept the lss,“ says Shear. Research published in 2020 als fund that PGD invlves different activity patterns in the amygdala (大脑杏仁核).
PGD can lead t a higher risk f death. One explanatin is that prlnged grief keeps the bdy in a lasting stress respnse. High levels f crtisl (皮质醇) can hurt the heart system and interfere with immune functin.
The mst cmmn treatment is Prlnged Grief Therapy. “The treatment fcuses n helping peple accept the reality f the lss and restre their capacity fr well-being, but frmal recgnitin f PGD is crucial, as it ensures accurate diagnsis and effective treatment fr thse stuck in this disabling experience,” Shear explains.
What is PGD accrding t the text?
      A. Grief that can't be treated.B. Grief that brings heartaches.
      C. Grief that cmes frm great lss. D. Grief that desn’t ease with time.
      33. What des the study published in 2026 mainly fcus n?
      A. Wh PGD affects. B. What PGD brings.
      C. Hw PGD wrks. D. Why PGD spreads.
      34. Hw des PGD affect humans accrding t Katherine Shear?
      A. It disturbs brain functins. B. It reduces memry activity.
      C. It weakens immune system. D. It shrtens peple's lifetime.
      35. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
      A. Official identificatin f PGD leads t better medical help.
      B. Well-being can be recvered with shrt-term PGD therapy.
      C. Reality acceptance f the lss is the main gal f curing PGD.
      D. Recgnitin f PGD largely relies n patients' self-awareness.
