Imagine being able t use energy frm the sun all the time, even when it’s night. That’s the idea that scientists at Caltech (Califrnia Institute f Technlgy) are explring. They’re wrking n cllecting sunlight in space and sending its energy t Earth.
Caltech’s scientists have created a special tl fr this prject. They call it MAPLE. MAPLE and tw ther devices are part f a prject that was sent int space in January, 2023. MAPLE’s jb is t test the idea f sending energy wirelessly frm space t Earth. We’re used t using wires t mve electrical energy frm ne place t anther. But sending energy withut wires is a lt tugher.
The methd used by Caltech’s scientists depends n the way waves act when they meet. Imagine tw waves cming tgether as they travel in the same directin. If the tps f the waves line up, they cmbine t make a bigger wave. But if the tp f ne wave lines up with the lw pint f the ther, the waves cancel each ther ut. The Caltech team has fund a way t cntrl the timing f lts f micrwaves s that they can cmbine their pwer, and fcus the energy in ne directin. It’s a little like using a magnifying (放大的) glass t fcus sunlight int a small, ht pint f light.
T prve that the system culd wrk, MAPLE sent energy t tw devices just 30 centimeters away in space. This energy was then turned int electricity, which made tw small lights light up. Next, MAPLE sent energy all the way dwn t a lab at Caltech. The scientists were able t detect the energy, prving that it’s pssible t send slar energy t Earth frm space.
Dr. Hajimiri, ne f the prject’s leaders, thinks that ne day, the system culd be extremely useful. He believes that in the future, we’ll be able t send energy t remte regins and areas destryed by war r natural disaster.
28. What is the challenge in Caltech’s prject with MAPLE?
A. Wireless energy delivery.
B. Sunlight cllectin in space.
C. Sending devices int space.
D. Using wires t mve electricity.
29. Hw des the Caltech team fcus slar pwer?
A. By using a magnifying glass.
B. By managing the timing f micrwaves.
C. By changing the directin f micrwaves.
D. By lining up waves in ppsite directins.
30. What ptential benefit culd the system bring in future accrding t Dr. Hajimiri?
A. Warning peple f natural disasters.
B. Turning slar energy int electricity.
C. Delivering energy t places in need.
D. Ridding the wrld f energy shrtage.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Use f Slar Energy in Space Explratin.
B. The Challenges f Generating Energy Withut Wires.
C. The Develpment f a New Tl fr Cllecting Electricity
D. The Pssibility f Sending Energy Wirelessly frm Space t Earth.

We’re all familiar with the trappings f n-screen science fictin, many f which expand the pssibilities f real science. But science fictin is nt a place fr utlandish escapism (逃避现实的消遣活动)—it hlds an imprtant psitin in cntemprary culture, and its influence can even be seen in the directin f sme real scientific and technlgical advances.
Smetimes, the language f science fictin shapes ur thinking and apprach t scientific investigatins. But the cnnectin between science fictin and science facts isn’t always metaphrical. Althugh nt as extrardinary as visiting the Mn, many nw-cmmn gadgets (工具) were imagined in science fictin befre entering the real wrld. The classic series Star Trek features several everyday technlgies: vide calls, autmatic sliding drs and flip phnes.
And it’s nt nly generalized visins f the future that find their way int reality: certain gadgets have been specifically designed with the inspiratin frm fictinal tech. In 2016, Nike prduced a limited run f self-lacing shes in 1989’s Back t the Future Part Ⅱ. This prduct wasn’t just fun: Nike partnered Michael J. Fx, wh played Marty McFly in the Back t the Future series, t raise mney fr his fundatin t fight Parkinsn’s disease.
The influence f certain wrks f science fictin can even shape scientific investigatins. Fr example, a black hle simulatin (模拟) was develped fr Christpher Nlan’s Interstellar, a mvie abut astrnauts traveling t the ther end f the Galaxy t find a new hme, which stars Matthew McCnaughey. T create the images seen in the film, Nlan asked Paul Franklin, the film’s visual effects supervisr, t wrk with Interstellar’s scientific cnsultant, Kip Thrne. This was n small task fr either f them. Thrne prvided detailed equatins (方程式) while Franklin and his team had t prgram new sftware t create the images. The resulting simulatin prvided new insights int gravitatinal lensing arund black hles. The requirements f science fictin shaped the directin taken by a leading physicist in his wn wrk. S, the influence f n-screen science fictin is nt reserved fr bx-ffice takings, but can inspire real change in science and sciety.
What des the authr say abut science fictin in the first tw paragraphs?
It’s a reflectin f the real wrld.
It ffers an escape frm reality.
It makes full use f everyday items.
It inspires real scientific research.
Why were Nike’s self-lacing shes develped?
T prmte a new mvie release.
T raise funds fr a charitable cause.
T cmpete with ther she brands.
T test new technlgy fr future prducts.
Hw did Kip Thrne help with the film Interstellar?
He cntributed t the visual representatin f black hles.
He tk measurements f actual black hles.
He wrte the fictinal stryline fr the film.
He tested ut certain sftware fr the film.
Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the text?
The Develpment f Science Fictin
The Rle f Scientists in Film Prductin
The Impact f Science Fictin n Real Science
The Similarities between Science Fictin and Real Science
