Seven children line up, awaiting their turn n a slide. As each child rushes dwn, the nes behind laugh and
cheer. Such scene is rare in Lags, ne f Africa’s fastest-grwing cities, with a ppulatin f abut 17 millin. But
n the city’s utskirts, a garbage-site-turned-park is prviding rm fr kids t play. The prject is the brainchild f
17-year-ld Amara Nwuneli, wh wants t prve that even in Lags’ mst crwded crners, children can have fun.
Fr Amara, the path t building parks began when a terrible fld struck her hmetwn in 2020. Heavy rains
swallwed entire neighbrhds, leaving thusands f families hmeless. “Peple just said it was gvernment
failure r bad luck.” Amara recalls. But, later, she realized it was what was called Nigeria’s “climate apathy”: the
tendency t view flds, heat waves, and drughts as islated (孤立的) incidents rather than cnsequences f a
      warming planet.
“I wanted t change the mindset,” Amara says. “If peple dn’t feel cnnected t nature, they wn’t fight t
prtect it. And I knew that had t start with creating spaces peple culd actually see and feel.”
It was n easy task. Amara first apprached the Lags State Gvernment, which ffered land but impsed (施
加) restrictins that made lng-term cnstructin impssible. After mnths f dead ends, she shifted strategy and
started lking fr alternative spaces that were accessible t high-risk cmmunities. Eventually, Amara secured a
garbage site. She then mbilized a team f artists, vlunteers, and small dnrs t clear the trash and rebuild the
site with recycled materials. Three mnths later, the park pened.
Amara is nw planning tw mre parks. She says cmmunities frm acrss the cuntry have been reaching
ut t her team fr advice n hw t reclaim abandned spaces fr public use. “That creates a kind f cycle,”
Amara reflects. “I take actin, thers ntice, they want t take actin, t. And tgether, it grws.”
      24. What might be a prblem Lags is facing?
      A. Insufficient public areas. B. Pr garbage management.
      C. Limited recreatinal activities. D. Uncntrlled ppulatin grwth.
      25. What made Amara determined t build parks?
      A. Lsses frm natural disasters. B. Peple’s ignrance f climate change.
      C. Disappintment in gvernment failure. D. Nigeria’s inadequacy in public educatin.
      26. What quality des Amara demnstrate when cmpleting the prject?
      A. Integrity. B. Optimism. C. Flexibility. D. Cnfidence.
      27. What des Amara want t cnvey in the last paragraph?
      A. Small steps make a big difference. B. Every clud has a silver lining.
      C. All rads lead t Rme. D. It is never t late t act.
      C
It was 3:30 in the mrning. I was hlding my baby, scrlling thrugh eBay and feeling grggy (昏昏沉沉的).
I had a brief ut-f-bdy experience, seeing myself as an utsider. There was my baby, gazing up at me, and there
was me, lking dwn at my phne. I was hrrified. It was then that I decided t “break up” with my phne and set
      better bundaries.
Our mst time-sucking apps are designed t grab ur attentin because that’s hw their creatrs make mney.
These apps are part f the “attentin ecnmy”, where ur attentin and data are sld. We are nt the custmers f
these apps; advertisers are. We are the prduct, tricked int giving ur mst valuable asset (资产) — ur attentin
      — away fr free.
We nly experience what we pay attentin t; we nly remember what we pay attentin t. Sure, there are
many reasns t pay attentin t ur phnes. But like time, ur attentin is limited: Every minute spent scrlling is
a minute nt spent n smething else.
App makers use psychlgical tricks frm gambling. These tricks cntrl the release f dpamine (多巴胺), a
chemical that mtivates us t repeat behavirs. This system desn’t distinguish between gd and bad behavirs
      — it just encurages repetitin. Phnes and apps are packed with dpamine triggers. Bright clrs, nvelty,
unpredictability, and rewards like scial apprval are all dpamine triggers. This is why scial media, news, email,
games and shpping apps are s addictive.
If we dn’t recgnize what is happening and fight back, we risk becming like lab rats trained t press a lever
(控制杆) fr fd. One f the first steps I tk was t minimize my expsure t dpamine triggers by turning ff
mst ntificatins (通知), hiding r deleting my mst time-sucking apps, and turning my phne’s screen t black
and white. I als banned my phne frm my bedrm and the dining table and charged it in a clset at night.
My relatinship with my phne still isn’t perfect — n relatinship ever is. But it has imprved in ways I
      never wuld have anticipated.
      28. Why did the authr decide t “break up” with her phne?
      A. She needed mre sleep.
      B. She fund apps t bring.
      C. She wanted t reduce her spending n eBay.
      D. She realized her attentin was being guided unfairly.
      29. Wh are the real custmers f apps in the “attentin ecnmy” accrding t the authr?
      A. Phne users. B. Advertisers. C. App creatrs. D. Data analysts.
      30. Hw d app makers make their apps addictive?
      A. By limiting user chices. B. By targeting dpamine triggers.
      C. By prviding useful cntent. D. By ffering varius rewards.
      31. What des the authr want t cnvey in this article?
      A. Breaking up with yur phne is easy. B. Phnes are designed t be addictive.
      C. Dn’t let yur phne steal yur attentin. D. Mre time shuld be devted t family.
      D
Understanding a prf in a math textbk is ne thing; being able t recnstruct it withut help is anther
thing. My classmates and I learned this the hard way at university. Mst f ur exams were ral exams, and nthing
expses a lack f deep knwledge faster than trying t explain a cncept t smene.
Unlike written exams, where visual learners may be able t parrt back memrized ntes that they barely
understand, an ral test demands creative thinking in real time. When presented with a prblem, students nt nly
need t recall relevant definitins and theries, but they als need t apply them — smetimes in ways they never
      anticipated.
Students ften fall int a familiar trap. They read the textbks, highlight key passages, and review lecture
ntes. These activities feel prductive, but when exam day arrives, a student will ften realize their passive
familiarity with the material desn’t translate int the ability t apply it. Nr des it translate int a gd grade.
Passive learning is misleading. It feels like we’re making prgress, but withut actually applying what we learn, it
      slips away quickly.
Cnsuming infrmatin is nt the same as develping skills. The cgnitive psychlgist Daniel T. Willingham
explains the distinctin between passive and active learning when he writes, “Memry is the result f thught.” In
ther wrds, we frget mst f what we encunter and remember nly what we think abut. Reading abut
calculatins desn’t autmatically create the neural pathways needed t slve calculating prblems. Thse
pathways nly frm thrugh deliberate practice: by slving prblems, making mistakes, and experiencing the
      struggle.
As a general rule, the harder yur brain wrks during practice, the better it perfrms when it matters. T truly
master smething, yu shuld embrace challenges and accept the slw, ften frustrating, pace f true learning. The
ral math exam was valuable because it brke the illusin f passive learning. Standing in frnt f the prfessr,
faced with a prblem, there’s nwhere t hide. The pressure t prduce mathematics revealed the true state f ur
understanding. T truly knw what we dn’t knw, we shuld simulate ur wn ral exams by picturing an
imaginary prfessr asking questins and frcing urselves t figure ut answers n ur wn.
      32. What des the underlined phrase “parrt back” mean in paragraph 2?
      A. Repeat mechanically. B. Appreciate deeply.
      C. Apply creatively. D. Frget quickly.
      33. Why d students fall int the learning trap?
      A. Because f ver-reliance n textbks. B. Because f brilliant exam perfrmance.
      C. Because f a false sense f cmpetence. D. Because f veremphasis n memry skills.
      34. Which f the fllwing statements might Daniel T. Willingham agree with?
      A. Repeated expsure strengthens memries.
      B. Active engagement builds slid memry.
      C. Memry imprves with extensive reading.
      D. Learning ccurs when teachers ask questins.
      35. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
      A. Passive Learning: The Silent Killer f Exams
      B. Cnscius Practice: The Best Way t Learn Math
      C. Oral Math Exams: The Frustrating University Tests
      D. Active Learning: The Key t Mastering Knwledge
