When Ghanaian phtjurnalist Paul Ninsn initially pursued a career in phtgraphy, he fund the challenge discuraging. Phtgraphy isn’t exactly valued as a career in Ghana, Ninsn says, “If yu tell yur parents yu’re ging t be a phtgrapher, it was like, ‘Yuck, what? G be a lawyer.’”
But Ninsn felt phtgraphy was his calling. Deeply influenced by the family histry f strytelling passed dwn thrugh his grandparents and later attracted by a friend’s images, he develped a lve fr phtgraphy. He sld his mbile phne, bught a camera and began studying phtgraphy.
Thugh Ninsn began his jurney with cmmercial phtgraphy, he sn shifted his fcus t stries clser t his heart-thse f African histry and culture that he wuld capture as a phtjurnalist.
Ninsn still sught frmal educatin in phtjurnalism. Unable t find a suitable prgram in Africa, he left Ghana in 2019 t study in New Yrk City. There, he read the center’s hundreds f phtbks. In Ghana, he nly had access t five r six f such bks.
As he ventured deeper int the city, he discvered mre visual histries f Africa than he had experienced at hme, such as dcumentatin f Ghana’s first president at the New Yrk Public Library. The libraries Ninsn visited were unwilling t give him their archives(档案)t return t Africa, which led t his idea f creating a leading phtbk library in Africa that held such stries. This idea has been realized with the creatin f Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana’s capital.
In Ghanaian artist Daniella Afful’s eyes, Dikan Center is the beginning f fr the grwth f Ghana’s creative cmmunity, “Dikan Center has magnified(放大)art and phtgraphy. Since 2000, butterfly numbers in the US have drpped by an average f 22%, accrding t a study published in Science. Declines have been recrded acrss the cuntry and amng a wide range f species. “A 1% — 2% decrease per year may nt sund severe, but ver decades, it is staggering,” says bilgist David Wagner frm the University f Cnnecticut. “The natural wrld is lsing diversity at an unexpected rate.”
Only 3% f the 554 species examined shwed grwth, mainly thse that adapt well t human envirnments. Mre cncerning is that the median species declined by ver 40%, indicating a brad and serius trend.

Researchers at Clumbia University have develped a new artificial intelligence(AI)methd that can accurately predict gene (基因) activity in any human cell, essentially revealing the cell’s inner mechanisms (机制). Detailed in the latest issue f Nature, this system has the ptential t change hw scientists study cancer, genetic disrders, and ther diseases.
“Predictive generalizable cmputatinal mdels allw t reveal bilgical prcesses in a fast and accurate way. These methds can effectively cnduct lts f cmputatinal experiments, bsting and guiding traditinal experimental appraches,” says Raul Rabadan, senir authr f the new paper.
Traditinal bilgical methds shw hw cells functin r respnd t changes, but they lack the ability t predict these prcesses. Recent advances in AI and massive bilgical data cllectins are making this shift pssible. Hwever, using AI t predict gene activity inside cells has been a greater challenge — until nw.
Rabadan’s team develped an AI mdel trained n gene expressin data frm ver 1.3 millin nrmal human cells. Unlike earlier mdels trained n limited data, this system uses genme sequences (基因组序列) and accessibility data t predict which genes are active in any cell. The prcess is similar t hw language mdels like MindLink, an AI chat tl, wrk: It learns patterns frm data and applies them t new situatins. Testing shwed the mdel culd accurately predict gene activity in cell types it had nt encuntered, matching experimental results clsely.
The researchers applied the AI mdel t study pediatric leukemia, a childhd cancer caused by inherited mutatins (遗传变异). The mdel predicted hw these mutatins disturb critical prcesses in cells, a finding later cnfirmed thrugh experiments. This understanding highlights the specific mechanisms causing the disease.
