第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分) While staring ut f the windw during a flight, nt everyne will think carefully abut the questin why airplanes have runded windws rather than square nes.
Over the years, aerspace engineering has made huge steps in airplane technlgy, meaning planes can carry mre passengers and g faster. The planes have als changed shape t increase safety—including the windws. As cmmercial air travel tk ff in the mid-20th century, airline cmpanies began t fly at higher altitudes t lwer their cst—the air density(密度) is lwer up there, creating less drag(阻力) fr airplanes. Hwever, higher altitudes came with prblems, like the fact human beings can’t really survive at 30,000 feet. T make that pssible, the cabin was changed t a cylindrical(圆柱体) shape t supprt the pressure inside. But at first, plane builders left in the standard square windws and this expansin meant disaster. The de__Havilland__Cmet came int fashin in the 1950s. With a clsed cabin, it was able t g higher and faster than ther aircraft.
Hwever, where there’s a crner, there’s a weak spt. Windws, having fur crners, have fur ptential weak spts, making them likely t crash under stress—such as air pressure. By curving the windw, the stress that wuld eventually break the windw crner is distributed and the chance f it breaking is reduced. Runded shapes are als strnger and resist defrmatin(变形), and can thus survive the extreme differences in pressure between the inside and utside f the aircraft.
Frtunately, designers figured ut the lack f design pretty quick. Nw we have nice, runded airplane windws that can resist the pressure f traveling altitude. It gives being able t gaze ut f yur windw t the wrld frm 35,000 feet a whle new utlk, desn’t it?
1、Why did airlines aim t fly at higher altitudes?
A.T save mney fr less drag.

D.T carry mre passengers and g faster.
2、What des the underlined wrds “de Havilland Cmet” in Paragraph 2 refer t?
A.An aircraft.B.A band.C.A planet.D.A design.
3、Which is the advantage f the runded windw?
A.It increases the air pressure.
B.It weakens the strength f air pressure.
C.It reduces the pssibility f breaking up.
D.It helps t survive the extreme weather.
4、Where des this text cme frm?
A.A newspaper n safe driving.B.A science bk n flying.
C.A website n survival skills.D.A magazine n fashin design.
22.(8分)Time Travel
If yu culd travel in time, where wuld yu g? Perhaps yu wuld watch an riginal perfrmance f a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What abut hanging ut with Lazi in the Spring and Autumn Perid? Or maybe yu'd vyage far ahead f the present day t see what the future hlds.
The pssibility f time travel is indeed appealing. Stries explring the subject have been arund fr hundreds f years. Perhaps the best knwn example is science fictin nvel. The Time Machine, which was written by H.G. Wells and published in 1895 fr the first time. It was adapted int at least tw feature films f the same name, as well as tw televisin versins, and a large number f cmic bk adaptatins. It is generally credited with the ppularizatin f the cncept f time travel using a vehicle that allws an peratr t travel purpsefully and selectively. The term "time machine", cined by Wells, is nw universally used t refer t a vehicle transprting peple int the far future.
But culd time travel actually be pssible? Sme scientists say yes, in thery. They prpse using cracks in time and space called “wrmhles”, which culd be used as shrtcuts t ther perids. Einstein’s thery f relativity allws time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking says yu culd travel int the future with a really fast spaceship ging at nearly the speed f light. Thugh building such a spaceship wuld f curse be n simple task.
Even if yu culd travel int the past, there is smething called the “grandfather paradx”. It asks what wuld happen if a time traveler were t g back in time and have his wn grandfather killed fr sme reasn, and therefre prevent himself frm being brn. If the time traveler wasn’t brn, hw wuld he travel back in time?
And wuld yu really like t visit the future? In H.G. Wells’ bk, the main character travels int distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then vyages 2 millin years int the future where the nly living thing is a black bject with tentacles(触角).
If that’s what’s in stre, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.

This, f curse, did nt g ver well... s I changed my directin.
I’ve been married fr three years nw, and Jenna’s bk played a big rle in gaining my husband’s lyalty. I started ut by making a decisin that I wuld nt berate (责怪) my husband fr his family’s actins. After all, he can’t help what his relatives d, and t blame him fr ther peple’s actins wuldn’t really be fair. Secndly, I made a reslutin that I wuld NEVER let them create an argument r prblem between my husband and me... this was really a grundbreaking mment fr me. After all, it was in my pwer t cntrl what items became issues in my marriage. I wuldn’t allw petty stuff his family did t upset ur balance... that wuld just give them mre pwer, cntrl, and influence. This tk a lt f time, but nce my husband realized that I was taking the high rad, he started listening t me mre.
I prmised “fr better r fr wrse” and I decided nt t let my in-laws make it wrse. As a new bride, I had n idea what I was in fr in terms f family management, and even nw I take time t re-read certain sectins frm Jenna’s bk peridically. 24.(8分)The year 3700, Earth is far t ht fr any human t call it hme. On this planet at least, man is nthing mre than a memry--if there is anything left t remember the "wise man". But what abut ur wisdm--will any f it survive us?
The cnventinal answer is n. Knwledge requires a knwer, and there will be n knwing minds arund then. But if infrmatin survives, perhaps in bks r hard drives, maybe the knwledge isn't quite dead but drmant(休眠), ready t becme alive with the help f ther minds that develp ver time r cme t visit Earth in the distant future.
At first sight, that seems t be reasnable: after all, we have dne similar things with past knwledge. Fr example, we saved an ancient cmputer frm a ship destryed at sea ff the suthern cast f Greece, and succeeded in finding the meaning f Egyptian hierglyphics(象形文字). Careful wrk can bring previusly lst wisdm back t life.
Hwever, the key pint is that there is a certain cultural cntinuity with thse ancient times that allws us t reasn and make prgress in the dark: we knw we are dealing with the legacy(遗产)f ther humans. Withut that link, the survival f bjects and raw data desn't guarantee the survival f knwledge. And a lack f cntinuity in language with any future intelligence wuld be a barrier. Knwledge is clsely cnnected with language. When a language dies ut, we can lse systems f reasning that they cntain. If that's lst, then it can't be recvered.
All this means that ther minds might nt be able t fully make human knwledge alive when we are gne. It is better t cncentrate n nt dying ut in the first place.

D.We prtect the legacy f ther humans.
4、What's mainly talked abut in the text?
A.Can human beings live n?
B.Will ur knwledge survive us?
C.What will the earth be like in the future?
D.Hw can we prtect ur culture?

Over the curse f three mnths, Bckler and her clleagues cllected data frm 161 peple between the ages f 20 and 50 as they experienced a “thughtful training” designed t help them fcus n their inner lives. The participants wh imprved mst ver curse f the training were als the nes wh shwed the mst grwth in hw easily they culd infer anther persn, s mental state, a skill knwn as the thery f mind.
Bckler believes these results are especially imprtant given ur current state f affairs. “Many f the glbal challenges that we face tday—taking in refugees (难民), vercming between-grup cnflicts, r leading mre sustainable (可持续的) lives—require that we put urselves in the shes f thers,” she said.
Still, we tend t seek inner cnsideratin as a gal in itself, while underestimating (低估) the ways it can als help us cnnect mre clsely t thers. Self-awareness isn’t limited t just us—it spreads ut int ur relatinships, t. Taking all thse persnality quizzes when yu’re bred n yur cmputer may nt be the mst helpful in that regard (就这一点而言), but by trying t becme mre aware f yur wn thughts, yu can begin t shape yurself int smene mre sympathetic (富有同情心的), mre smart and better at understanding the wrld utside yur head.
