After ten years in Lndn, I recently relcated t Berlin, and as is custmary when making new friends, the questin “Where are yu frm?” tends t cme up. My hnest answer wuld be, “I dn’t really knw.”
The truth is, mst f us TCKs (Third Culture Kids) — a term cined t describe “children wh mve between cultures befre they have had the pprtunity t fully develp their persnal and cultural identity” — had n chice grwing up but t fllw ur parents arund the wrld. We’d ften be tld, “Pack yur bags, kids. We’re mving!” and in the blink f an eye, everything wuld change.
By the time I was 18, I had changed schls 10 times, mved cuntries at least 6 times, acquired a cnfusing accent, and develped bth a lve f travel and a desire fr stability. Being an Indnesian-Italian, I ften felt an identity crisis weighing n me in my teens.
Mving t a new cuntry after spending ten years in the UK — the lngest I have lived anywhere — has brught back feelings f this cultural cnfusin. Grwing up as a TCK isn’t as charming as many peple wuld expect. It is bth a blessing and a curse (诅咒), beautiful but unpredictable, and full f adventures. This lack f rts and stability will likely cause issues later in life.
Yet kids are adaptable. After vercming culture shck, yu start t adjust and see the bigger picture. Yu learn that the wrld is much bigger than yu, and that yur prblems are small. Yu als learn respnsibility, respect different beliefs, and frm yur wn pinins. Making friends and then lsing tuch teaches yu that everything is temprary.
Grwing up as a TCK, yu rarely realize hw adaptable yu are, until yur lder friends ften cmment n hw “wise and mature” yu are fr yur age. Travelling frm a yung age pens yur eyes beynd “Hypernrmalizatin”. It teaches that diversity is nthing t be afraid f. Grwing up as a TCK was tugh, but I wuldn’t trade it fr anything. It has shaped me t be the persn that I am tday — an actual “citizen f the wrld”.
4. Hw des the authr usually respnd t “Where are yu frm”?
A. By stating her natinality directly.B. By admitting her uncertainty hnestly.
C. By explaining the TCK cncept briefly.D. By describing her experiences in detail.
5. What des the authr say abut TCKs’ childhd?
A. They enjyed planning their mves.
B. They resisted their parents’ decisins.
C. They maintained their persnal lifestyle.
D. They were frced t adapt t sudden changes.
6. Which f the fllwing can best describe TCKs’ experiences?
A. Tugh and cnfusing.B. Peaceful and predictable.
C. Rutine but eye-pening.D. Adventurus but beneficial.
7. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Grwing up as a TCKB. Challenges fr Migratin
C. Hw t Becme a Glbal CitizenD. Hw t Adapt t Diverse Cultures

At the same time, the natinal husing shrtage is in the millins. Cities like D.C., are nw betting that by turning empty ffices int hmes, ne crisis can help slve the ther.
A prject in D.C., which brke grund last mnth, is the largest such cnversin (转化) in the city t date. The verall structure f the buildings will remain the same, but with majr additins: a lighter-clred exterir (外部) will replace the gray cncrete frm the 1960s, and ld inefficient windws will be replaced by larger nes that let in mre light per unit. Plans include luxuries such as a pl and a dg park, with prjected rent arund $4,000 per mnth. Yet 60 units will be set aside as affrdable husing. “We wuld lve t d mre,” says Matt Pestrnk, the president f a develpment cmpany, “but unfrtunately, almst all capital seeks a return. This was as much as we culd affrd t d.”
“It des kill tw birds with ne stne, in terms f prviding sme husing supply.” says Tracy Lh, a fellw at the Brkings Institutin wh studies adaptive reuse f ld buildings. And it tends t create husing in central, transit-accessible areas that are in high demand.
The decline f manufacturing (制造业) in the late 20th century ffers a glimpse f what cmes next. When shifts happen in the ecnmy and sciety, the built envirnment must change t match cntemprary demand. Just as empty factry flrs became trendy apartments, tday’s empty ffice spaces are turning int stylish kitchens and bedrms.
8. What are cities like DC trying t d?
A. Repurpse empty ffices.B. Tear dwn unused buildings.
C. Build husing in suburbs.D. Encurage wrking frm hme.
9. What can be inferred abut the prject in paragraph 3?

C. It is funded by the gvernment.D. It balances prfit and scial needs.
10. What des Tracy Lh think f the cnversin?
A. Realistic.B. Nt far-reaching.
C. Demanding.D. Shrt-sighted.
11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Cities Are Caught in CrisisB. Husing Demand Is Crying fr Mre
C. Offices Are Becming HmesD. Manufacturing Is Gaining a Secnd Life
D
What if the cmputers f tmrrw didn’t depend n metal and plastic, but instead grew frm the sil beneath ur feet? This idea is turning int reality in a labratry, where researchers at The Ohi State University have fund that cmmn fungi — such as shiitake and buttn mushrms — can be used t create memry cmpnents fr cmputing.
These mushrm-based devices act as rganic memristrs (忆阻器), shrt fr memry resistrs. Unlike traditinal resistrs, memristrs have the unique ability t retain infrmatin abut past electrical states. When current flws in ne directin, their resistance increases; when it flws the ppsite way, their resistance decreases. Even after the pwer is switched ff, the resistance level remains, thus allwing memristrs t functin like tiny memry units inside a cmputer.
Mushrms cntain a dense, thread-like netwrk knwn as mycelium (菌丝体), which can send tiny electrical signals — much like memristrs d. T test this, scientists attached wires t dried mushrms and sent small electrical pulses thrugh them. The results were remarkable: the mushrms switched between electrical states up t 5,850 times per secnd with abut 90% accuracy. Althugh their perfrmance drpped under higher electrical frequencies, stability returned when several mushrms were linked tgether — suggesting a kind f cllective intelligence, similar t hw brain cells functin tgether.
Beynd these exciting results, mushrms cme with majr envirnmental advantages. Traditinal memristrs rely n scarce minerals and require high energy cnsumptin. Mushrms, hwever, are renewable, bidegradable, and easy t grw. Their mycelium can als be shaped int custm structures, making them suitable fr wearable electrnics, smart sensrs, and ther emerging technlgies.
“Everything needed t explre rganic cmputing culd be as small as a pile f natural waste and sme hmemade electrnics — r as large as a culturing factry,” said Jhn LaRcc, the study’s lead authr. “All f it is achievable with the resurces we already have.” In the nt-t-distant future, the cmputers n ur desks may very well have taken rt — quite literally — in the frest.
12. What des the underlined wrd “retain” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Track.B. Stre.C. Gather.D. Analyze.
13. What des the authr want t illustrate by mentining brain cells in paragraph 3?
A. The cmplex structure f mushrms.
B. The rapid electrical respnse f mycelium.
C. The cperative nature f mycelium netwrks.
D. The unstable perfrmance f mushrm devices.
14. What advantages d mushrm-based memristrs have accrding t paragraph 4?
A. They are rare and special.B. They are smart and pwerful.
C. They are creative and prductive.D. They are sustainable and adaptable.
15. What can be inferred abut rganic cmputing frm Jhn LaRcc’s wrds?
A. It has a lw barrier t entry.B. It will advance frest research.
C. It helps reduce agricultural waste.D. It will create mre jbs in factries.
